The Great Depression was introduced to the world in 1929. During these depressing years, many economies slumped in industrialized nations in North America, Europe, and other continents. The Great Depression was the longest and most severe misery the Western world has ever faced. Along with the episodes that struck during the Great Depression, the countries involved have improved their industrialization and economy. The Great Depression advanced and transformed the world because of the military dictatorships, fascism, militarism, totalitarian, capitalism, and the unemployment that resulted to this action.

Millions of people were affected, including the middle and lower classes, who would just become poorer. People in upper classes, even dropped to the lower class. The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the world. It began in the United States when the stock market crashed in October 1929. Everybody was sent into a panic and millions of investors were wiped out. Unemployment levels began to rise after consumer spending and investment dropped, while stock prices continued to increase. Companies started to lay off their workers, and soon nearly thirteen to fifteen million people in America were without jobs.

During the Great Depression the unemployment rate went up, they were forced to eat at soup kitchens or go through garbage cans for food, and they even had to build shelter out of cardboard. The first underlying cause of the Great Depression was underconsumption and overproduction. Many things contributed to the underconsumption of goods. The production line kept producing goods even when people could not afford to buy them.

Fashion was redefined as feminine and light-hearted, furthermore representing women as unsuitable for education or citizenship and lacking reason by nature. Solely men were considered gifted with rational thought which entitled them to be politically empowered. They expressed this in their clothing, replacing the heeled shoes with the promising three-piece suits, carefully avoiding standing out too much from each other.

The president at the time, Herbert Hoover, was unsuccessful in his ability to stop the Great Depression which made lots of people head towards the president after him, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). FDR was successful and the Great Depression ended in 1939.

The fashion of the 1920 s is a reflection of peoples extravagant lifestyles and elevated thinking. It was an exciting time to be a woman because more freedoms and opportunities were available, not to mention woman gaining the right to vote . There were new patterns of clothing, bras,and smaller corsets not to mention that most of the clothing was made by the woman themselves. Through the years woman have stayed at home and not had much involvement in the society.

In the 1920s fashion was a movement of freedom with flappers, bobbed hairstyles and using art as a fashion statement. “Fashion should be stylish and fun,” (Twiggy). In any decade fashion was a way of saying something. One of the women’s careers was being in the fashion industry.
