Sleep Disorder Research Project-Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder due to overwhelming downiness and sudden attacks of sleep. The word narcolepsy comes from two Greek words translated as “seized by numbers”. The cause of narcolepsy is unknown. Most people with narcolepsy have low levels of the chemical hypocretin. It is first describes by doctors in the 1870s. Narcolepsy affects both males and females equally.
Symptoms often start in childhood, but it can occur later life. Narcolepsy is a life- long conditions, it is not rare but it is an underrecognized and underdiagnosed condition. Experiences in narcolepsy various different types of day: excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, disrupted nocturnal sleep, and obesity. Cataplexy is a sudden loss of muscle tone while the person is awake that leads to feelings of weakness and a loss

Doctors prescribe central nervous system alerting agents such as modafinil and amphetamine-like stimulates to alleviate EDS and reduce the incidence of sleep attacks. GHB or Xylem can be used to treat narcolepsy. Sodium oxybate is a strong sedative that must be taken during the night. It induces sleep and reduces the symptoms of daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. You can also use behavioral strategies to help cope with your symptoms. Many individuals take short regular scheduled naps at times when they need to feel sleepiest. You can also maintain a regular sleep schedule avoid alcohol and caffeine containing beverages, avoid large, heave meals just before your bedtime, avoid smoking, maintain a comfortable warm bedroom and engage in relaxing activities such as a warm bath before bedtime. You should also exercise for at least 20 minutes per day at least 4 to 5 hours before bedtime, it improves sleep quality and can help people with narcolepsy avoid gaining
The Complexity of Sleep In Matt McCarthy’s Nap Time, he discusses the “most mysterious” of all needs - sleep. McCarthy uses the story of Mike Napoli to introduce this topic. Napoli’s story of his struggle with severe sleep apnea includes some abnormal elements. Firstly, he cites his “first dream in a decade” that he can actually remember (p. 49).
This a clear sign of insomnia if you do not know if your sleeping or awake this could cause a lot of chaos. People with insomnia would do things thinking they are in a dream but in fact it is in the real world. This could cause a lot of conflict in everyday situations and cause a lot of harm to people. Another way to help with insomnia is by ”Suffering insomnia, the Narrator attempts to find relief by participating in support groups for cancer survivors and the terminally ill, where the instability and suffering he witnesses dispel his own alienation(Burgess).” Support groups helps you to deal with your problems even though you all dont have the same mental or physical impairment.
This may mean limiting the amount of sugary foods the patient eats, besides making sure he or she doesn’t drink too many caffeinated beverages as this can cause night restlessness. It can be beneficial to work with a qualified nutritionist who can devise a food and beverage plan suited for your loved one. Encourage Exercise One reason it may be hard to sleep at night is because of a lack of enough physical activity during the day. Discuss with your loved one’s doctor or caretaker which types of exercises are both beneficial and safe.

The discourse surrounding sleep paralysis is filtered through a mixture of folklore and sleep psychology. The understanding from those within the hard sciences is also limited to a basic overarching knowledge—the physiology is consistent, the experiences are disparate, and the interpretations remain singular beasts. There are more creative names for the experience than the sterile and scientific sleep paralysis: In Newfoundland some call it The Old Hag or Night Hag. In Japan, kanashibari (meaning ‘to tie with an iron rope’). The Chinese call it meng
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
Unlike adults, they have a more immature nervous system. (Ben-Joseph) The immaturity of their nervous system’s causes the brain to have some un normal dysfunctions. A very rare condition, called Narcolepsy, is a lifetime nervous system that causes abnormal sleep. (Lights) Night terrors are caused by over- arousal of the central nervous system during sleep.
This strange phenomenon happens often, and the term for it is “sleep paralysis.” according to Penn State University, their research shows that it happens more often in students and psychiatric patients (University Park,2011). III. So, what exactly is sleep paralysis?
With the help of regular exercise routine you can improve the amount your body spends in the restorative sleep stage. But you can take the benefits to a next level by increasing the vigour in which you exercise. The more vigorously you exercise, the better your sleep will become. When I talk about intensive and vigorous exercise, I’m referring to two key pointers. First, your exercise should be vigorous in terms of getting your heart rate beating faster.
Napping has been shown to be an effective means of countering persistent sleepiness. The length and timing of your nap and the quality of sleep you get help determine the brain-boosting
Gaukhar Dosmuratova PSYC 1111 Sleep Deprivation experiments Sleep deprivation is a condition when a person has problems to get enough sleep. Nowadays, sleep deprivation has become a common problem. Sleep plays a vital role in people’s lives because by getting enough sleep at the right times a person can protect his/her mental and physical health. During sleep, your body and mind are resting and it supports healthy brain function and maintain person’s physical health. There are many types of research were made on sleep deprivation.
this paper presents a comparison among different time frequency representation methods in sleep study with EEG signal .EEG signal reflects brain activity and is useful for sleep study. Sleep study is necessary for diagnostic and treatment of sleep disorders. EEG is a non-stationary signal and therefore classic methods such as fourier transform is not suitable for studying it. Time frequency representation is one of the methods that are used for feature extraction of EEG signal. There are many approaches to time frequency representation and it is necessary to examine which of this approaches have better results for sleep classification.
When it comes to sleep, as many already know, there are various stages. However, what is rarely covered is the stages other than REM (rapid eye movement). The first stage encountered on a nightly basis is that of NREM 1 (stage 1). In this stage, our bodies essentially start to slow down various bodily functions such as breathing and pulse (“sleep”, n.d). Next comes NREM 2 (stage 2).
Sleep paralysis is when, during awakening or falling asleep, a person is aware but unable to move.[1][2] During an episode, one may hear, feel, or see things that are not there.[1] It often results in fear.[1] Episodes generally last less than a couple of minutes.[2]
