Having the opportunity to work with underserved populations has sparked my interest in an area of medicine I previously did not know about. As a volunteer, I served as a patient advocate. Not all of these conversations were intense and deep-rooted, but to see the overall impact I was able to have on the patients as a volunteer was what caused me to be enamored with medicine. In addition, being a patient advocate was a great way to provide help to those that needed it the most.

Hope is not lost for our nations veterans, there are initiatives that may be implemented in order to improve the quality of care. We have identified four key areas that we feel will improve the quality of care for our nations veterans. These areas are; Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACTS), the program of vocational rehab, positive media relations, and universal electronic medical records. PACTS are formed when a veteran works together with multiple care disciplines in order to achieve whole person care and sustain life long wellness (VHA, 2015). These teams focus on patient medical partnerships, access to care, coordinated care among disciplines, and team based care with the veteran as the focus (VHA, 2015).

However, I want to do more I want to be able to follow the process from beginning to end and do the evaluations. I want to be able to do the testing and the measuring. I have set out on this journey of health care because I want to help people go from post-operative to back to fully functioning with realistic goals in place. I want to be able to walk the journey with the patients and let them know that they are not on it alone. Through Physical Therapy I feel that patients get more than just rehabilitation of an injury or surgery but they get a change in mindset from injured to functioning independently again as they did before.

Health care is a term that describes a broad range of services. Members of a health care team range from family members to neurosurgeons, but each member of a patient’s health care team plays a critical role in optimizing patient care. Therefore, it is important to recognize and appreciate all the players in the medical field and their contributions to health care. I was drawn to the medical field because of my love of science and endless curiosity. However, it was not until high school that I narrowed my science passion down to human science.

The level of care that the varying healthcare professionals provided to these patients was fascinating and became intrigued to a career path in the medical field. Over the next couple of years, I narrowed the possibility

The OT will look at how things may have changed for Taylor after a TBI and SCI and then recommends different ways to do tasks or provide modified equipment to support him to be independent as much as possible. To many people when they hear the word student they think incompetent but if we can make an effort to make a connection with them we may be able to ease that concern. By treating every person with respect they will do the same for you and it will be easier for them to recover. During my internship experience I have seen the difference attitude and behavior toward patients make during the recovery process. An important skill that Physical Therapy students should have is being able to be discreet.

It is a job that will always be needed, there will always be people that need help regaining their physical health to be able to walk again or maybe just be able to move their thumb again. Physical therapists have to run tests when a patient comes to the office. This is to make sure where and what about the type of injury. After the patients’ assessment, the physical therapist will setup a patient treatment plan in accordance with the written and signed prescription of the referring physician. Create PT treatment plans to improve or restore a patient’s mobility and reduce pain.

Not only did I have hands on experience with patients but I also performed clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, recording demographic and insurance coverage information. At Piedmont Hospital I provided accurate education on procedures that were needed for new patients. Over the summer observing at Emory Hospital I accessed the effectiveness of therapy plan by observing patients’ reponses and observed patients during PT procedures to determine discomfort or pain. The last place that I completed my observation hours was at the Childrens Hospital of Atlanta in providing cold pack treatments and operated and maintained therapy equipment. Last but not least, I assisted the patients in administering active and passive therapeutic exercises.

Patient centered care is an approach of forming a therapeutic relationship between care providers, older people and families, mainly focusing on the values and respect (lenus). Care of which is respectful to an individual’s needs, values, social circumstances, lifestyles and family situations by putting them at the centre of care is a priority. This is a way of thinking and doing things in a way of using health and social services as partners. Meeting the needs of the older person include personalising the care of preference, taking account the physical comfort and safety of the individual and Making sure patient has access to appropriate care when they need it. Involvement of families is important as the centre of decisions, whilst working along side professionals for the best outcome.
