Residential schools were a boarding school that was set up for the purpose of teaching and assimilating aboriginal children in the 1880s. These schools were an important part of Canada’s history because they treated aboriginals as themselves, as aboriginal people, and their culture was inferior to Canadians, although at the time they thought they were doing the aboriginals good. Some would argue that residential schools were a good thing, that they benefited the aboriginal people and that they didn 't do them wrong while others still believe that residential schools did more harm than good to these students lives and wellbeing. Personally, I think that residential schools were not justified. Being torn for from your family and forced into an abusive school system where you had no choice but to give up your culture and beliefs is simply not okay. To me, learning life skills such as how to read, write and operate farm machinery would not have been worth the trauma and mistreatment they received. Imagine what being forced away from your family, having to forget about your culture without a choice, and being put into an a cruel, abusive school system where you would have to live would be like. How could a somebody learn and be happy in such conditions? Residential schools are a huge part of Canada’s history because of what they stood for. Stephen Harper presented this apology to formally recognizes the dark chapter in our history as wrong and that it “has no place in our country.” This apology was long overdue and should have happened earlier since the last residential school closed in 1996. Without an apology, the government recognized that “there has been an impediment to healing and reconciliation” for those who have been impacted by residential schools. With this apology, it acknowledges the fact that residential schools were real and has deeply impacted the lives of Aboriginal people. The apology ended with by mentioning of “the cornerstone of the settlement agreement is the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission [TRC].”
Residential schools were first being established in the 1940s and the last one was finally closed in 1996. In these residential schools, First Nations people were very badly treated and one who went to those schools would not get a proper education. The students who went to those schools would still be affected by it and effects from them are showing still to this day. Residential schools were religious schools that were sponsored by the government in order to convert aboriginal children into the European – Canadian way of living.2 The government believed that if they were able to successfully assimilate the children, the Native culture would cease to exist, the children that would have participated in those schools would only be able to pass down the Euro-Canadian culture. Residential schools were ran in a methodical way, bells will ring waking up the children and motioning them to dress up then they were forced to attend a Christian church regardless of what they believed. After that breakfast would arrive then they would attend classes and do school work. There was a short period for the children to play, followed with dinner and then bedtime.

Aboriginal people continue to be victimized and incarcerated at much higher rates than non-Aboriginal people. The overrepresentation of Canadian Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system is a question that has not yet been answered. This research paper will focus on the risk factors experienced by many Aboriginal people, residential school experiences, and institutional racism, and their roles in the overrepresentation of Canadian Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system. The Canadian government system has tried to deal with this issue, but looking at the high rates of overrepresentation, there approach has not been successful.

Canadians have put Indigenous communities through much heartache and pain.
