In 1607, the first wave of colonial settlers arrived in Virginia and began to establish Jamestown. Many of the new settlers came from wealthy families never performing a day of manual labor. With agricultural farming, being the revenue source of the new colonial settlers there would soon be a great demand for labor. Contracts of indentures were expiring and with much devastation in England, there was a shortage of English servants. Since the number of Africans far outweighed English servants, the English dominant sought to take advantage of this and in 1662 passed an act that racialized slavery by defining it as a status inherited “according to the condition of the mother.” In January 1639/40, Act X passed stating, “All persons except negroes to be provided with arms and ammunition or be fined at pleasure of the Governor and Council” giving us one of many documented acts of how racial freedom was affected. This again helps to establish a timeline of when laws were passed that affected race and freedoms. If in 1630 a law of this magnitude was spoken without question as to its meaning then does it not stand to reason that an undocumented law was already in place? It has been written that the Virginia colonies were not as proficient in record keeping when it came to African slaves. The evidence presented here presents an overwhelming argument that race did exist before the seventeenth century. Just by looking at the few facts provided and reading between the lines it will become evident that freedoms defined by race and slavery existed much earlier than what is in our history books. However, in order to get a true picture of historical events I believe history also needs people who are willing to read between the lines and argue ideas. The New England colonies that settled in North America were predominantly composed of the Puritans, which originated in the rectification of protestant in England. Furthermore, they were the first of the English colony to bestow legal authorization to slavery, recognizing human captivity was acceptable in 1641. Hence, the 1641 bylaw is not purposely aimed for a certain tribe or ethnic group. These laws that were imposed in the 17th century, made it harder for slaves to be able to runaway, rebel, and buy their own freedom. One of the laws that were imposed was the law of 1639, which prohibited Negros from being able to own guns. If any Negro was caught with possession of a gun or ammunition, they were subject to a fine at the governor’s or council’s judgment. This law really curbed the liberty of the slaves because they were no longer able to possess anything to use to defend themselves. The primarily focus of this paper is to address the studies of the African-American views, conflict, and treatments from the Southern states following The Civil War. Documents include “Black Codes of the State of Mississippi” and the “Address of the Colored Convention to the People of Alabama”. These documents provide shaped rules, laws, and statutes for black society among whites. Between the years of, 1865 and 1867, both Alabama and Mississippi took action and state their thoughts towards the end of slavery in the United States.
Indentured Servants The idea of indentured servants were not introduced until the settlement of Jamestown by the Virginia Company in 1607. The growth of new crops such as rice, tobacco and indigo demanded plantation workers. Without enough workers, the landowners would lose money because the cash crops would die before they could be harvested. Without the machinery that is present today, workers would have to work very long hours each day. Supposedly, indentured servants were not the same thing as being a slave.
In 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia, 105 English settlers established a diplomatic relationship with Powhatan the Algonquian chief . The agreement was that the Native Americans would supply the English settler’s food, and the settlers would not mess with the natives land. Things were doing pretty good till the English settlers became forceful and impolite to the natives, they started treating them like garbage. The natives took it upon themselves and decided to let the settlers go hungry. That is when the battle began.

In the light of two prominent newspapers in Massachusetts during the 1760s there was a great paradox of the citizens view on freedom and slavery. To understand this paradox, the newspapers will chronologically show how the citizens of Massachusetts believed in freedom from Britain was important but neglected to give the blacks their freedom. It is important to note that every time people mentioned slavery it was not for the slaves, but the “political slavery” with Britain. Through analyzing these newspapers and reading secondary literature on these matters, one can recognize the paradox of liberty. In Chapter 3 of A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki, he attempts to understand the hidden origins of slavery. In this essay, I will describe and analyze how Takaki uses race, ethnicity, historical events, and famous people to have a better understanding of slavery. We know that slavery itself is a system where an individual owns, buys, or sells another individual. The Irish served as indentured servants, not just blacks, but as time passed slavery consisted of just African Americans.
When The Second Continental Congress approved of the Declaration of Independence, it purposefully avoided the complicated situation that was slavery. African Americans, both freed and enslaved, were outraged. How could the Founding Fathers write such a riveting and long document for themselves, while completely ignoring the African American struggle for freedom on the basis of skin tone? The hypocrisy was too much for Benjamin Banneker, who took it upon himself to write a letter to Thomas Jefferson about the atrocities of slavery, and persuade him to abolish the practice.
