As a photographer, Vivian Maier 's street photography is interesting because it captures everyday life on the street, but her work always seems to have a purpose. All of her photos have interesting subjects and focuses, which allows a lot of diversity in her photography. Her street photography and self-portraits are very similar, in my opinion. They are similar because they capture many emotions in an array of settings. Since many of the pictures are candid, they show true, raw emotions that do not over-glorify the reality of the situations caught on film. Maier naturally places herself in a setting, which allows her to capture photos that are natural. In both self-portraits and street photographs, she often tries to create a mysterious photograph. …show more content…
I do believe street photography can play a role in society because artists are able to tell stories that are not obvious to the public. There are many lessons to be learned from the variety of people found in society and artists are able to capture these lessons to share with the world. In a society where there is an ample amount of inequality, I think photography can teach lessons about closing the gaps in society and accepting people who are different. Maier was obviously very different than others around her, yet her art has become extremely impactful in the world in which we live. Photography is an exciting form of art because it can tell stories that otherwise would be ignored or forgotten.
Street photography captures a lot of candid moments which allows audiences to relate to different emotions that are felt through pictures. Street photography allows collaboration between many people including the artist and regular people that fall into the frame of the camera. Streets and photography come together to give a voice to those who would not normally have one and help influence change in society. I believe all art forms are beneficial to society, regardless of the artist 's intention Vivian Maier has a unique story and way of capturing life on the streets and showing the world her
The Into the Light exhibit, located in the Thomas Center, displays a wide array of Virginia Louise Leak’s artwork. Although Leak was diagnosed with a mental illness, she was still able to produce a lifetime of art. I believe her illness is what makes her art so extraordinary and relays a deeper message than what it appears to be on the surface. To me, if you truly desire to understand a work of art you first have to learn about the artist; therefore, before I even began observing the paintings and etchings I carefully read all of the plaques that gave detailed information about Leak’s life, history, and her works of art. Not all of Leak’s painting and etchings are on display for the public, but the artwork that is available to the public is truly astonishing.
It gives him a more personal meaning to the portraits. Being a street photographer is like being a storyteller. Discovering new faces and new cultures or backgrounds everyday. He illustrates people’s thoughts and state of mind through the images. He explores stranger’s pure vulnerability and what interactions follow.
Abandoned by her father at a young age, four year old Vivian and her mother lived with the award winning French portrait time photographer, Jeanne J. Bertrand. It is presumed that Ms. Bertrand possibly had a big influence on Vivian at an early age. According to the Boston Globe dated Aug.23, 1902, “From Factory to High Place as Artist,” Jeanne J. Bertrand, had become one of the most distinguished photographers of Connecticut (Boston Globe, 1902). During her early twenties, Vivian Maier’s moved between the United States and France.
Inner city neighborhoods are often thought of as a place of violence. People appear tough, and they act against others before others can act against them. While their way of life may seem odd to those of that did not grow up in the inner city, I believe that the code of the street acts as informal social control. How an individual acts or looks can have serious consequences, and sometimes those consequences can be deadly. The code of the street is simply a response to unemployment, available jobs that pay less than living wage, and a general lack of hope.
As you make your way to Downtown Los Angeles, you will notice that there are towns for different types of cultures. To name a couple, there is China Town and Korea Town. Olvera street, located in the oldest part of Los Angeles, is a street dedicated to preserving the Hispanic culture. Olvera street also known as La Placita Olvera or El Pueblo Historical Monument is open seven days a week (Rondeau). Although Olvera Street is similar to the other towns, it provides a unique experience through its numerous events that celebrate Mexican traditions.
Public Space Observation Rachael Blouw Doctor Henderson World Urban Sociology For this project, I went to the University Center main lobby to observe people’s behavior. In this space, there are many people who were walking around, sitting at tables, and going to classes. This public area can be accessed by anyone for most of the day, except at night. I decided to sit toward the back of the lobby area, so I could watch everyone while they went about their business. I noticed several different behaviors between people.

Some people can not afford canvas so they use the walls on the side of the road. Support: Art is a way to express emotion and pain. It is better than self harm and taking anger out on others in the form of assault.
