The Locavore Movement Increasing levels of greenhouse gases produced by fuel of trucks and animal production has caused a major impact in pollution and climate change. Also, in the U.S. there is a bad nutrition outbreak due to not eating enough fresh foods with the right nutrients. There is a movement taking place is aimed to solve this problem but will it actually work? The Locavore Movement is aimed to increase the nutrition in foods and reduce pollution. The Locavores, which are people of this movement, have decided to eat locally grown or produce products as much as possible. The key issues of these movement are to eat healthy, fresh food and increase the preservation of the environment. The Locavores blame this to the outside production and transportation of products such as meat or vegetables. They have decided that the consumption of local food will help in reducing global warming because the distance of transportation of products will be small compare to outside production. Still, this is not completely true. The transportation of products is not greatest factor in climate impact in fact one of the greatest contributor to the Greenhouse gas emission is the production of foods (Source D). Also, the difference of CO2 produce by outside production and local production might be minimal if not the same. James McWilliams says that shipping a truck with 2000 apples over 2000 miles would be the same as a local farmer pickup truck selling 50 apples over 50 miles as it can be measured as “apples per gallon” (Source C). This tells us that there might be a minimal difference in gas consumption when shipping food away and it is not a major impact in CO2 emissions. Writing an argument is something all strong writers know how to do. By learning from other peoples mistakes and the different types of methods writers become more persuasive in their arguments. The Toulmin method is one way to analyze an argument. Stephen Toulmin created this method to better understand and examine the pieces of an argument in order to decide the effectiveness of it. In the article “The Locavore Myth: Why Buying from Nearby Farmers Won’t Save the Planet”, James E. McWilliams argues that although the locavore movement has brought attention to industrialized food, the movement still does not prevent the damage that is being done to the earth.
In Maryruth Belsey Priebe’s article “Benefits of Being a Locavore” she expresses the benefits to buying local produce. Priebe catches her readers in her opening statement discussing the benefits of becoming a locavore with “Supported by environmentalists and average households, locally grown food is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint while enjoying tastier, healthier food at a lower cost” (Priebe). A locavore is a word used to describe someone who purchases food locally in order to try to reduce their carbon footprint. Is eating meat a detrimental threat to the environment? This debate over meat’s involvement in the global warming crisis was what inspired Nicolette Hahn Niman to write, “The Carnivore’s Dilemma.” Niman hoped writing, “The Carnivore’s Dilemma,” would cause her audience to understand that eating meat, raised on traditional farms, was a superior alternative to vegetarianism. Niman supported her claim by explaining how industrialized farms and vegetarians produce more of the three greenhouse gases that caused global warming, than that produced by traditional farms. Niman’s article fell short of being effective due to flaws in her supporting evidence and conclusion.
Locavores are misinformed idealist who believe in changing the world by eating locally. They believe by eating locally, they are improving their carbon footprint, help the local economy, and creating a more nutritional diet. However, locavores are ignorant of many situations such as many people’s lives depend on trade and that many places are not suitable for farming. Even though a locavore’s heart is heading in the right direction, but their efforts are misguided.
As we go through The Jungle, Omnivore’s Dilemma, and Food, Inc., it becomes apparent that all of these publishings target ethos to appeal to their audience. Upton Sinclair uses ethos during the time when he describes workers washing their hands in the water used for the sausage (Sinclair 143). This is bias because it compels the reader into acknowledging that the things going into food is not right, however it does not show any good qualities in the meatpacking industry. Therefore, this affects the reader’s value system because when they were informed of the monstrosities going on within the food industries, it changes their trust towards the industry. Eating Towards Global Warming Global warming has been a topic of debate for many years now. A more recent argument is that food production is a key contributing factor to the global warming epidemic. Due to McWilliams’ strong claim, evidence, warrant, backing, and rebuttal to counter arguments, his argument is therefore an effective one, according to the Toulmin method. The most important and key components, that are vital to an argument, are the argument’s claim, qualifiers, as well as the evidence the author uses to support their argument. If there were no claim, then the author has no firm stance or basis for their argument, because they would have nothing to defend or persuade their readers of. The claim James E. The Locavore’s Dilemma is an article written by Christophe Pelletier. In this article he explains as to why buying food exclusively inside a 100 miles radius is not a wise or sustainable choice. He says that while in the future changes to the production and transportation of food may change, limiting yourself to food within a 100 mile range is not the right way to go. In The Locavore’s Dilemma he is successful in developing the writing so that people understand why we need to buy food from farther than 100 miles, he has made a very organized article to follow, and his expression is very easy understand the point he is trying to get across.

Better Eating Habits of Louisiana The south is known for consisting of states that cook the most heartiest meals and extremely unhealthy meals from the way that the main course is prepared to the desserts being filled with lots of sugar. The state of Louisiana is a true southern state because it is known for its culturally driven food, especially in the city of New Orleans. For many years the concept of eating healthy has gotten more popular because it has became a major priority. Many of the causes of death are because of poor diets and not doing exercise activities properly.
These eaters ignore the politics concerning food rather looking for esthetics and quick service. Due to these disregarding’s, the industrial eaters won’t ever realize that eating responsibly is a way “to live free” (2). Berry then lists off seven points regarding how to eat more responsibly for the passive consumers. These points range from “[participating] in food production to the extent that you can” to “[learning] as much as you can, by direct observation and experience if possible, of the life histories of the food species” (Berry 4-5). Berry also believes that it’s important for the animals that meat comes from to have lived a pleasant life.
There are many debates on whether the organization of a locavore movement in a local community would be beneficial or not. There is an abundance of people against the locavore movement, consequently people still think it’s beneficial to the community. With this information in mind, it’s clearly believed that organizing a locavore movement would be beneficial towards a local environment. One of the benefits of being a locavore is being portrayed in Source G.
The sociological imagination on food In this assignment I am going to talk about the sociological imagination on food and the aspects it brings with it. Before starting that large process I firstly will explain what the social imagination is and what the key points of the imagination are in able to fully understand the topic; food and its history, biography, and the relation it has in society. It not only wastes money but also causes some environmental problems, such as pollution and rats. However, many people do not realize the problem now. Considering that food waste is troubling, it is important to initiate a movement to motivate residents to reduce food waste, and the movement can be carried out through reeducatice and facilitative strategies. Food waste is a significant food-related issue in my community as well as many other communities and cities.
