We celebrate Veterans Day every year on November 11th to honor the men and women who served and is still serving our wonderful country. We shouldn’t honor a veteran just once a year but everyday because they are protecting us everyday. When we say the pledge in the mornings we should be thinking about our veterans and what they did for us. Many veterans we get to still celebrate with and some were not so lucky and didn’t make it back home to their loved ones.

April 16, 2007, started as a normal day. Virginia Tech students rushed to their classrooms to avoid being late, but little did they know the tragedy that was going to take place that dreadful day. Shortly after 10:00am 32 students lives had been taken by one of their fellow classmates. After the shooter ruthlessly shot and killed each one, he took his own life. April 16 will forever be recognized as a day of mourning and remembrance, but also as a day where we come together as a nation and overcome the defying odds we were left with.

Former President of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan in his address at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day 1985 testifies his views and respect for the Veterans who have served to protect the United States. Reagan’s aspiration in his address is to convey the standard that Veterans deserve. Through the speech, Reagan embraces a solemn tone to reveal that though he holds a high position his nobility is to be put aside to amplify the sacrifices the Veterans have made for the country and its population. Reagan reveals through his address at the Arlington Cemetery that those who served for the freedom of the United States deserve respect at all times, not just on one day of the year.

We have memorial day to remember all the people who died for our country freedom. It was officially was declared on may 5, 1886 by General John Logan. On the first decoration day General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 union and confederate soldiers buried there. Memorial day also became more popular after World War I and World War II. There were more American lives lost during the Civil War then the two World Wars combined.

It reinforces my commitment to fight for a nation where every citizen is valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It is a fight for the true ideals that our Military upholds—equality, justice, and freedom for all. My duty as a veteran and an ally is to speak out against injustice and fight for a society that embraces diversity and equality. As someone claiming to love this country and honor our fallen veterans, Mr. Jones's speech is especially troubling. Memorial Day is a solemn occasion that should transcend political divides and unite us as a nation.

Thank you Veterans Veterans do a lot for us by defending our country and our home. We thank them by having a full day dedicated to our veterans. Three reasons that I think veterans should be thanked for are; going out to defend our country when no ones else does, I also want to thank you for demonstrating a great work ethic and doing all of this work for people you don’t even know. The first thing I want to thank you for was for defending our country.

I myself have to think sometimes about what other people might be going through, even though we have freedom over here, there are many wars happening and many people losing their lives. To me, a veteran is a hero in disguise that live among ordinary people and live ordinary lives. Veterans day was originally called Armistice day. It got that name at the end of World War One. But the name changed to Veterans day some time after World War Two, to honor veterans from both wars. Every year, we celebrate Veterans day.

I also believe that the soldiers who were not in the front lines were just as brave to be there to support our country. Even those who are peacetime veterans are important and should be honored just the same. Peacetime veterans are home and get to be around their family while knowing that at any time they could be called in to fight. Ninety-eight years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between Germany and the Allied Nations in World War I. One year later, it was celebrated as Armistice Day to honor the cause of world peace. After World War II and the Korean War, it was renamed Veterans Day, dedicated to American veterans from any war. The transition from Armistice Day to Veterans Day seems appropriate, for we would not have peace if we did not have veterans. But the implication that veterans are mere preservers of order is a vast misrepresentation; they do much more for our nation.

There are a lot of important reasons why we should honor our veterans. One of the biggest reasons we should honor our veterans is because they risked their lives to protect ours. In some of the scariest, if not the scariest, situations in the world, thousands of soldiers bravely fought for our freedom. Even though they knew the risks, they still decided to go into the military. To this day, many veterans still face side effects of war.

On the last Monday of May, we Americans celebrate Memorial Day. To others, Memorial Day consists of a day filled with sleeping in late and grilled burgers and diving into the recently opened pools. But do they not understand the reason as to why they possess this freedom? Personally, I view Memorial Day as a day to reflect on our freedom; to remember our fallen Americans.

The US has grappled with many questions about society’s obligations as to whether or not to offer services and benefits to the men and women in the armed forces. Supporters argue that helping veterans will help the society as whole and opponents argue that we shouldn’t be increasing our federal government spending in repaying veterans. Although I do see where people can argue that we are spending too much money on helping veterans after war, I believe that the government owes them for what they have done for the country, despite the cost. The government owes certain benefits to veterans because the men and women in the armed forces deserve to be welcomed home with a generous system of services for what they have done for the country. Helping veterans goes way back all the way to the 1600s.

I just want to thank our veterans for everything that they have done. In this essay I am going to write about what I am grateful for, how hard it is to be away from your family, the sacrifices that I think they have made, what they are doing for our country, and some facts. I think this will be a good topic for me because my great grandpa fought in World War 2. I will never forget him. So I hope you like it
