What is the nature of humans? Is it good or bad? Anywhere you look, you can see that human nature seems innocent and pure, but the minds of many people are evil and filled with hate. In "Lord of the Flies,” Golding demonstrated that human nature is more sinister than benevolent. Evil human nature is also present in” To Kill a Mockingbird” and in real-life events, such as WW2. These sources show that human nature is truly evil because of its hate, discrimination, and violence. In “Lord of the Flies” Golding indicates that human nature is evil by showing violent thoughts and murder. When the boys form a circle around Robert, vicious thoughts run through Ralph's mind, “The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering’ (Golding, 115). Although nothing violent occurred, Ralph's first thoughts were evil and vicious. During the confrontation of Castle Hill after Piggy’s death, “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone= "(Golding, 181). Jack didn’t show any signs that he cared or had any remorse for Piggy after he was …show more content…
During the Tom Robinson trial, Bob Ewell is on the stand, “I know who it was, all right, lived down yonder in that n_____ nest… I’ve asked this county for fifteen years to clean out that nest down yonder… they’re dangerous to live around ‘sides devaluin’ my property—” (Lee, 177). Bob Ewell is full of hate towards people of color even taking it as far as to try and remove them from their homes. After the trial, Bob Ewell confronts Atticus, “Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life’ (Lee, 221). Even though the Ewells won the trial, Bob threatened Atticus for doing his job and was willing to harm him and his family. Harper Lee shows that evil minds are too narrow-minded to see what’s right and

Are People Innately Good or Bad? In the book “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding a plane crashes on an uninhabited island in the middle of the ocean leaving a group of adolescent boys to survive until help comes. The boys try to elect a leader to keep order on the island, but this system eventually falls apart, leading to chaos. This book has a hidden question called an allegory.
I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-”(Golding 181). Piggy was struck by the rock and murdered by Jack, who was ecstatic after his death. While Piggy was the pinnacle of knowledge and
Eli Murillo Thompson/Franco Honors English 9 23 March 2023 Man’s Inherent Evil British writer and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft says, “No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.” In Lord of the Flies, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys crashes into an island leaving them stranded. One of the older boys, Jack, attempts to control everyone through means of violence and force. Another older boy, Ralph, endures the temptations and dangers on the island, whilst trying to get everyone rescued. This book discusses humanity’s natural tendency to choose evil and the boys’ descent from innocence to savagery.
Human beings' internal motive is evil, Evil is a first thought in all minds but can be suppressed if there's incentive to. Jack, one of the main protagonists of Williams Golding's novel “Lord of the flies” is a prime example of when there's no incentive to not carry out those acts. Jack, a young boy who represents the dark side of human nature and goes against the rules established by society, leads many boys to be ruthless and carry out sinister behaviors throughout the book. In Phillip Zimbardo article about “What makes good people do bad things” we get to see a deeper perspective on what initiates the evil drive in human nature. Zimbardo's article brought in points that were related to “the lord of the flies' ' such as wearing war paint to cover true identity, which he describes as a place where you “lose your humanity' ' and makes you more subjective to caringing out evil acts.
In Golding's novel The Lord of the Flies the author claims that human nature is naturally evil. This assessment of human nature is accurate in the real world and in other novels like Animal Farm by George Orwell. There are different levels of evil and people fall differently among those levels. “Not all evils are equally evil, but evil is morally bad or wrong” (Vocabulary.com) In Lord of the Flies Golding presents human nature as fundamentally evil through the use of the five boys stranded on an island.
Is there a greater number of evil humans than good? Willaim Golding's novel Lord of the Flies, released in 1954, has several illustrations of how humans may be evil. History has often demonstrated how bad humans are. Slavery and the Pearl Harbor attack are excellent examples of terrible people. The slave trade was a mass slaughter conducted by Portugal due to a labor shortage.
Immediately after Piggy’s death, Jack shouted, “I am chief!” With no time to hesitate, the boys immediately charged Ralph, as if the death of a young boy had not phased them in the slightest. This event shows how “evil” the boys had become and a window into the boys
Is human nature innately righteous? Even with the technological, social, and economic advancements humankind has made, the world still experiences periods of brutality. From the American Revolution to World War I to World War II, humanity has been left reeling and struggling to rebuild during spans of ferocity, which is also reflected in literature. In the novel Lord of the Flies, author William Golding characterizes human nature as evil, which is an accurate depiction of society due to its tendency to resort to violence.
Throughout the course of history, humans have shown that they will trend towards evilness, instead of doing the right thing; evilness has been shown through events like slavery, the terrorist act of 9/11, and further explored through literature, such as in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. One Historical event that truly shows evil is the history of slavery. Throughout slavery there was a lot of slave masters mistreating slaves and one powerful quote from a former slave stated. “I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of frauds, and the grosset of all libels' ' (Fredrick Douglass). Seeing this from a former slave who taught himself how to write since the slave owners weren't gonna teach him shows a lot about slave masters
Why things are the way they are?”(Golding 143). Here, the beast is described as a merciless monster that “is a part of you” and the reason “things are the way they are”. Although the beast symbolizes primitive instinct in all, it’s also proven that the beast symbolizes plain evil. Since the beast lies in the boys representing humanity and also symbolizes evil, it’s proven that everyone has villainy in them. This shows that people are born with evil inside them, some choose to showcase it, and others choose to let it sit inside of them, slowly burning, waiting to explode.
William Golding paints a story of the evil that lies within all humans showing its despicable nature, only suppressed by the pressure of civilization in the story of the Lord of the Flies. This idea of group psychology revealing evil in all humans is false because human nature is largely composed of selfless acts. People will put themselves at a disadvantage to aid others with no foreseeable return on those actions. Golding uses Piggy to show the ease of which logic and reason can dissolve in circumstances where evil can show. Pigs carry a hidden meaning in Lord of the Flies.
Human Nature: The Constant Battle Between Good and Evil Many humans encounter hardship when deciding between right and wrong. Everyone's pasts are different, which results in different mentalities and choices made in life. There is no true good or evil within human nature; nevertheless, humans can still make good and evil decisions. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding portrays human nature as entirely cruel; however, it is not completely good nor bad but is determined by life experiences, choices, and consequences.
In William Golding's novel The Lord of the Flies the author argues that human nature is inherently evil through the rapid abandonment of civilization. Golding's claim that humans are inherently evil, savage, and selfish is accurate with real life. George Orwell’s Animal Farm and a scientific study on The Tragedy of the commons by Garret Hardin similarly demonstrate the evil nature of humans; they capture the way that humans will always put
