Beowulf cleanly fits the archetype of the epic hero. He has superhuman abilities in his extreme endurance, strength, and perseverance. He enters into a hero’s journey and eventually dies a symbolic death. Finally, he truly embodies the best of what society values. He exemplifies all of these traits throughout the epic as he leads his band of Geats to glory. Beowulf attempts to overcome seemingly impossible odds in a foreign, hostile world, and his epic hero traits interplay with this theme.
Impossible correctly describes Beowulf's abilities. Feats that he accomplishes could simply not be done by a mortal without some superhuman power. In the end, Beowulf dies but may be seen as immortal in that his legend lives on to this day. Beowulf uses his skill set to dispatch monster after monster in a world full of danger. The Danes once enjoyed halcyon days under Hrothgar, until Grendel ravaged their population and morale. Beowulf quickly ends Grendel by

These threats eventually kill him, but in such a way that his death is symbolic. The steps of the quest clearly present themselves to the reader. Beowulf ventures to Heorot aiming to restore peace to the Danes. Almost immediately, Beowulf is thrust into conflict in this alien world when Grendel attacks. Beowulf deals with him and moves on to the next threat. Finally, Beowulf gains advice from Hrothgar and heeds it, ruling over the Geats for fifty years. However, his quest is not truly over. Yet another alien threat materializes; a fire-breathing dragon wreaks havoc on the land. Beowulf falters and realizes he will be defeated. Wiglaf aids him, and Beowulf deals the fatal blow before dying. Beowulf’s death reminds the reader that everyone is mortal. You must die, you will die, even if you are a ruler of otherworldly capabilities. This symbolic death is the struggle Beowulf cannot win. Death stops for him, and he cannot escape his
In the early medieval ages, the spread of Christianity greatly influenced the Germanic ideals. One can see this drastic transition in character while reading and comparing the books of Beowulf and King Arthur. Although the story archetypes remain the same for the most part, the archetypes reflect the different ideals of the different time periods. Archetypes such as the hunting group of companions and quest still hold significance, but reflect different ideals. The ideals of the Germanic peoples of Northern Europe drastically change as Christianity moves across the region, and the traditional story Archetypes reflect this change in cultural ideals.
The epic Beowulf, reflects the values and importance of the Anglo-Saxon period. Beowulf, who is a brave leader, encounters three major challenges; the battle with Grendel, the battle with Grendel’s mother, and the battle with the dragon. He is triumphant in all three battles. The three major ideas, fate, Anglo-Saxon hero, and fame are all displayed in Beowulf. A recurring pattern or model of an action, a character, or an image in life or literature is called an archetype.
The epic poem Beowulf by Seamus Heaney used character archetypes to explore the values embodied in Anglo-Saxon culture. The first battle in the poem occurs between Beowulf and Grendel who best embody the Anglo-Saxon value of courage. Beowulf is the perfect representation of this value due to his insistence on fighting Grendel without weapons; “No weapons, therefore,/ for either this night: unarmed he shall face me” (Heaney 683-84). Thus when Beowulf proclaims that he is not using weapons he displays both honor and courage since it takes guts to fight a monster without an advantage. The Anglo-Saxons respected this quality and made their epic hero a perfect fit for this trait.
Beowulf is obviously an archetypal hero, being one of the first heros created in a writing. In Beowulf there is a hero, outcast/scapegoat, and many symbols. Beowulf is the hero because he is
In Burton Raffel’s epic poem, Beowulf, Beowulf shows many characteristics that exemplify the epic hero archetype. In this poem, Beowulf shows honor by fighting Grendel without weapons, because he knows grendel does not use weapons himself.. Beowulf also exemplifies bravery by willing to fight the dragon without any of his men, even though he knows he will die if he goes alone. These are just some of the many characteristics that Beowulf shows exemplifying an epic hero. The first characteristic that Beowulf shows exemplifying an epic hero is honor.
An archetype is a character or motif that appears in many types of literature, one of these is an epic hero. The epic hero is a character that appears in many old english poems, the most famous being Beowulf. Beowulf is set between 449-1066, but the exact date in unknown. During this time period many Anglo-Saxons took a part in mead hall, these mead halls and the people who were in them became their families. They were extremely loyal to them, and socially were switching from Paganism to Christianity.
The story of Beowulf successfully follows every step of an Archetypal Hero Quest; the hero, Beowulf, answers a call, makes a decision, prepares, faces obstacles, reaches a climax, and returns home. Beowulf is met with three large battles within Beowulf, first with Grendel, then with Grendel’s mother, and his last fatal battle, with a dragon. Each battle carries aspects that add to the Hero Quest but do not fully create one until all are together. The call is the beginning of a Hero Quest.
The hero in the epic poem Beowulf is the main character, Beowulf. He demonstrates heroic qualities as soon as the readers are introduced to his character. Beowulf proves himself to be courageous and brave by voluntarily fighting the “undefeatable” monster, Grendel. He is greatly admired by both the Danes and Geats for his courageous acts. Although his motivation is altered to only benefit himself with the title of the greatest warrior, his plan to save the Danes is greatly appreciated by all in the land.
An Epic Hero is a character who’s legendary or heroic actions are central to his culture, race or nation. Beowulf and Odysseus both share some of the seven hero traits; for example being superhuman, fighting monsters and going on a quest. They do not exhibit the exact same traits or in the same way, for example the intervention of the divine world, but they both demonstrate the qualities of an Epic Hero. Both Beowulf and Odysseus prove they are superhuman. Beowulf is able to take down Grendel and Grendel’s mother.
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
Beowulf shares the same traits with as many other heroes I know about. For example, Beowulf 's willpower can be compared with Henry Cavill 's Superman (Man of Steel). In Beowulf: "The Battle with the Dragon", Beowulf battled the dragon and he noticed that his weapons started to fail him and that he was weakened by his age. In spite of that, Beowulf 's willpower enabled him to continue fighting the dreadful beast. Eventually, after his ally Wiglaf provided Beowulf with some assistance, he was able to break through and deliver the killing blow to the dragon.
Beowulf’s fate causes some of his men to get killed in battle and he leaves his land ungoverned and susceptible to attack demonstrated by the quote, “Grendel snatched at the first Geat, ripped him apart, and cut his body to bits,”(421
The story of Beowulf isn’t just any ordinary story, but a story that has been told for centuries. A story of a hero who’s legacy has been told for so long. Beowulf’s life shows the characteristics of a true epic hero. He showed bravery, he used his strength against his enemies and in the end gave the ultimate sacrifice for his people.
The story of Beowulf depicts an invincible character who slowly reveals his mortality as the tale progresses. At the beginning, the reader is introduced to a son of royal blood who was known for his strength and victory in battle. Other than the fame he had gained from whom he descended and the victories he had won, Beowulf was just like everyone else. He had no gift from the Anglo-Saxon Gods, nor was he granted power from a magical sword. A series of three battles allows the reader to understand things about Beowulf that reveal the mortal side of him.
In the book Beowulf the character Beowulf has all the characteristics of an epic hero. Ted Ed says on What Makes a Hero? That “The stages of the hero are The call to adventure, Assistance, Departure, Trial, Approach, Crisis, treasure, result, return, new life, resolution, and status quo”(Ted Ed). To be a hero they go through the stages and if they don’t they are not counted as much of a hero to people’s eyes.
