After reading Native Americans and the “Middle Ground,” I realized how narratives of historians are quick to shame and blame Native Americans in history. This article begins by revealing how European settlement presented the Indians as obstacles. Recent historians, such as Gary Nash, show the Native Americans as being conquered by the Europeans. Author of The Middle Ground, Richard White, seems to be one of the first to examine the culture of Native Americans and the relationship between colonists. White writes about the “middle ground” of the politics and trade that is eventually established.

There were harsh conflicts between white explorers and Native Americans from the earliest starting point of European colonization of the New world, such viciousness expanded in the mid-nineteenth century as European pioneers moved ever advance west over the American mainland. Most white Americans accepted there was horrible quality of life in peace and agreement with Native Americans, the government made the reservation framework

Tragically, hidden behind this God-driven and rightful duty, America tried to justify their violent and cruel actions towards Native Americans. Under religious purposes and political principles, the United States erroneously justified the brutal treatment done to the first inhabitants of America. Immorally Americans felt superior and filled with pride they became blinded to the pain of their neighbors. The government unlawfully took their lands and forced them to leave what belonged to them.

Since the Transcontinental Railroad was created, the Native Americans land and culture was impacted by the Western Expansion. People thought the railroad was a positive thing because it improved transportation and communication, but many Native Americans were harmed because of it. During the years of 1850 to 1890, the Native Americans were forced off their land because they were in the way of the making of the railroad and the discovery of gold. Also, Americans broke the treaty of Fort Laramie, caused the Battle of Little Bighorn, and lost many lives because of their selfishness for the gold. In addition to that, Native American’s culture changed throughout time.

Throughout the history of not only the USA, but of all of America, its natives have played a key role in many events and have influenced the path of history. They also were forced to endure a lot when Europeans came to America. The Europeans took their land, and killed their people, often decimating their population, and making it hard to continue their way of life. That is why it is important to acknowledge Native American groups that, to this day, are still strong, and thriving.

Under influence of president Andrew Jackson, the congress was urged in 1830 to pass the Indian Removal Act, with the goal of relocated many Native Americans in the East territory, the west of Mississippi river. The Trail of tears was made for the interest of the minorities. Indeed, if president Jackson wished to relocate the Native Americans, it was because he wanted to take advantage of the gold he found on their land. Then, even though the Cherokee won their case in front the supreme court, the president and congress pushed them out(Darrenkamp).

This is displayed when they are not permitted to their complete spate justice system as well as their inability to be a sovereign nation without U.S. government intervention. Yet there is hope that new technology and procedures could lead to better treatment and understanding of Native Americans. At the beginning of the 19th, the United States was looking for an expansion of land. The white settlers wanted the lands used by the Indians for their own economic gain. By 1830, President Jackson issued the Indian Removal Act; allowing state officials to override federal protection of Native Americans. Most Indian tribes left their homelands in Georgia during the early 1830s. However, the Cherokees remained.

When the Europeans began colonizing the New World, they had a problematic relationship with the Native Americans. The Europeans sought to control a land that the Natives inhabited all their lives. They came and decided to take whatever they wanted regardless of how it affected the Native Americans. They legislated several laws, such as the Indian Removal Act, to establish their authority. The Indian Removal Act had a negative impact on the Native Americans because they were driven away from their ancestral homes, forced to adopt a different lifestyle, and their journey westwards caused the deaths of many Native Americans.

People just think of the Native American people in storybook tales and nothing more then that. The Native Americans have been living in the United States for awhile now and were the first ones on the country’s soil. They were here way before Christopher Columbus and the other European Colonists even discovered America and they are still present in the U.S.

The People against Native Americans As new people come to America and begin to settle, Native Americans were pushed farther and farther away from their homeland. Their land was taken from them and their freedoms were long gone. White settlers had created restrictions on their land, trade, and freedom which are still in effect today.

Nobody's lives would be the same after losing the ones they had lost during the long journey. The Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears were terrible events for the Native American people to live through. They lost lives, supplies, homes, and family memories.
