Contrasts and Contradictions in To Kill A Mockingbird
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there were many different characters who changed throughout the book. The story was written in the perspective of a young girl named Jean Louise Finch, who was known as Scout in the book. The Finch family consisted of Jem, otherwise known as Jeremy Atticus Finch, and Atticus Finch, the widowed father of Jem and Scout. The Finch family lived in an old southern place called Maycomb County where almost everyone knew each other. In Maycomb County, there were very few lawyers however, Atticus Finch was one of them. Since Atticus was one of the only lawyers in town, he defended Tom Robinson, a black

To further develop Jem’s character, Lee wrote a scene with Dill, a friend whom the Finch children played with in the summer time every year. Dill and the Finch children were always daring each other to complete certain tasks, most resulted in dangerous outcomes. One of the dares Jem was given was to touch the Radley house. The Radley house was known in the neighborhood as a scary, mysterious residence in which the individuals, who resided there, rarely showed their faces in public. Two men lived in the Radley House, one named Nathan who came out everyday to go to work, and one named Arthur, also known as “Boo.” Most people in Maycomb county thought Arthur was scary and very mysterious, as a result, most of the children called him Boo. Consequently, when Jem was given the dare to touch the house he became panicked because he didn't know what would happen to him after touching the proclaimed haunted house. Jem had been known not to deny a dare, and was beyond scared to follow through with the initial request. Harper Lee set it up in the beginning of the book as if Jem never declined a dare. Dill said, “You gonna run out on a dare?”(pg 17). The author includes Dill questioning Jem because anytime before this instance Jem would have completed any dare
(Lee 17). Ignited the small pride Jem had, as well as when scout sneered at him because she knew he was afraid. All of which these factor drove Jem to accept, and do the dare which was given to him by dill. 2. There are many “alleged” incidents that make Boo Radley a suspect to a man of violence.
Jem also tries to fight a man that is much bigger than him, to save his younger sister, Jem. A quote from the book says, “In all his life, Jem never declined a dare.” , which suggests he’s not scared to do anything. Jem shows responsibility when he tells Dill, “You oughta let your mother know where you are.” This shows responsibility
Murdering the Innocence To Kill A Mockingbird, a 20th century novel written by Harper Lee, is narrated by Scout Finch. She and her family live in Maycomb, Alabama which is a prejudice town with prejudice people during the Great Depression. She lives with her brother Jem and her father Atticus who is a prominent lawyer in Maycomb. In this novel Atticus teaches that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because it is an innocent creature.
Gossip is sporadically acceptable, usually substandard, but completely a part of human nature. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee the people in Maycomb who are the targets of ridicule and misconceptions are usually easy targets because of them being different from the rest of the town. The minorities in this book, racially or socially, are gossiped about by the small minded majority in the small town of Maycomb, Which cause unnecessary consequences like the death of Tom Robinson.
In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is one of the main characters. Atticus Finch is the fifty year old father of Jean Louise Finch and Jeremy Atticus Finch. He is Maycomb’s lawyer and is defending a black man named Tom Robinson who was accused of rape by Robert Ewell and Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch’s first three priorities are honor, respect, and acceptance.
Failure is described as the lack of ability to perform a duty or expected action. In this context, the ‘duty’ or ‘expected action’ Atticus refers to is being a good parent and guardian to his two children, Scout and Jem. Although Atticus does, in some ways, harm his children, I feel that he does a good job of bringing up and educating them. Hence, I disagree that he is a 'total failure as a parent '.
The Future of Scout Finch She has always loved to read, following her father’s footsteps. She has always asked questions and has always wanted to know more. Inquisitive in the court system, Scout Finch was born to be lawyer. Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” includes key events in the story to foreshadow to the reader what Scout Finch will be when she is older. Her father and the environment that she is in has a big influence on this.
Paradoxes Now with the possibility of backwards causation there arises some paradoxes within the view. Namely, there are three different types of paradoxes to talk about, the Bootstrap Paradox, the Consistency Paradox, and Newcomb’s Paradox. The one that we will focus on, and I believe holds that most weight against backwards causation is Newcomb’s Paradox. The paradox in short is that a person is given a choice between two boxes, by a fortune teller who can fully predict the choice of the person. The boxes contain one thousand dollars in a clear box, box A, and an opaque box, box B, that either contains one million dollars or no money at all.
You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks Tim Johnson was a recognizable dog in Maycomb County, Alabama. Tim Johnson was regarded as “The pet of Maycomb county”(105). This title is very interesting. This means Tim Johnson is the mascot for the people of Maycomb. Tim Johnson’s owner was Mr. Harry Johnson.
Family is Forever “I don’t want to lose him [Jem] and Scout, because they’re all I’ve got” (Lee 366). -Atticus Finch Atticus is the father figure for his kids, Jem and Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The Finch family lives in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression.
At the start of the book, Jem, Dill, and she played ‘Boo Radley’ which was a game to torment Boo into coming out of his house and to test each other’s bravery. Scout slowly begins to realize that Boo is a human being just like her. By the end of the book she calls him by his real name, Arthur, instead of the nickname the townspeople give him. When she finally gets the chance to see Mr. Arthur in person after the attack, she acts mature and non-childlike. She respects that he likes the dark so she takes him to the chair farthest from Atticus and Mr. Tate.
Father, lawyer, and friend, the gentlemanly Atticus Finch hopes to shape the character of his children. The novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is the story of the childhood of a young girl named Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Throughout the book, Scout’s father, Atticus, tries his best to raise her and her brother, Jem, the right way as a single parent. To Kill a Mockingbird exemplifies the way the character of Atticus Finch either uses ritual or abandons it in order to develop certain character qualities within his children. He specifically focuses on the development of honesty, courage, and humility.
Kid’s make mistakes. Helping a child solve a problem instead of harsh punishment is making a child suffer for having a problem. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a young girl named Scout is faced with punishment after beating an immature boy named Francis for making rude remarks about Scout’s father, Atticus Finch. Atticus is a lawyer; he is supposed to support and defend a helpless black man in a case. In the 1930’s this was unacceptable, so in their small town in Maycomb Alabama, the Finch family received many disputing and hostile comments for Atticus’s actions in court.
Courage is the mindset or boldness to face pain, suffering, or shame for the greater good. To Kill a Mockingbird by harper lee is set in the 1930’s in maycomb county alabama. Throughout the novel characters show courage in many ways, some greater than others. The three most courageous characters in the novel being, Atticus finch, a father and lawyer, Tom Robinson, an african american slave, and mrs. dubose a morphine addict. They all overcome different hardships with one attribute, courage.
Imagine living in a society where you do not have the right to defend yourself because of your ethnicity and social status. Having this kind of system in your society can massively affect your family life, lively hood, and it can also affect your mental and physical health. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb’s social hierarchy is based on a person’s ethnic and social background which is portrayed in the characters Bob Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch. Maycomb's citizens are segregated into a social hierarchy that is ranked from "wealthy whites", "poor whites", “white trash”, "black people", and "mixed people".
