Examples Of Courage In The Crucible

A courageous character is that of which shows bravery, one who is not deterred by danger or pain. There are many characters who exhibit courage throughout The Crucible. However, there is one character in particular who stands out the most throughout the play. John Proctor seems to be the most courageous because he does several things no other character would even think of doing. Several times throughout the play, Proctor speaks out in opposition to Reverend Parris.

In the play The Crucible by Arthur, the character John Proctor in acts 1 and 2, had as motivation, keep in secret his affair in secret and maintain and a clean reputation. To begin, in act 1, John Proctor went to the Parris’ house to see why a lot of people was outside of it. There he had a conversation with one of the girls and also the one who John had an affair, Abigail, about why Betty Parris doesn’t wake up and he and asked her “what’s this mischief here?”, because “the town’s mumbling witchcraft”(Miller 21), and then Abigail confessed “we[the group of girls] were dancin’ in the woods last night, and my uncle leaped in on us. She took fright, is all.” (Miller 22), acquiring the information of what really happened that night.

Many characters in The Crucible succumb to dishonesty by virtue of fear. On the contrary, I argue that the character Proctor was an exception, standing out from the rest with his bravery. Proctor spoke up to Reverend Parris when no one else did, he confessed to committing adultery with Abigail, and he sacrificed his life to uphold the truth. John Proctor was not faultless, yet he displayed the most considerable acts of courage compared to any other character. John Proctor bravely challenged the accusations of witchcraft and tries to shed light on the truth.

John Proctor assumes the main part in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. He was determined, genuine, and brimming with respectability. He was essentially, a man with pride. An insightful lady once said, "Do what you feel in your heart to be correct -for you'll be reprimanded at any rate. You'll be condemned on the off chance that you do, and doomed on the off chance that you don't."

Truth is something that is true. The crucible has many examples of courage. There are a few men in the play who show extreme amounts of bravery. John Proctor is an astounding example of a man who shows courage many times through the play.

Everyone knows it's hard to tell the truth, but how many would if faced with death? Fear, Isolation, and Lack of Courage Repeat Themselves in History It is often seen that history repeats itself. Although the events may seem different, the players new, many mistakes are often repeated throughout time. Fear appears in many historical events. It is usually earned by not knowing or understanding what is happening.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Rather it is the judgment that something else is more important than fear. In Arthur Miller's, The Crucible, many characters have to decide whether they should confess to dealing with the devil and run away their “good name” or be hanged for something they did not do. In life, everyone is responsible for their actions which mean the characters in The Crucible should confess to their actions with the devil. Abigail Williams the vehicle that drives the play, Abigail, Reverend Hale, and Mrs. Putnam all bear the responsibility for the hysteria in the trial.

In those times we don’t always think about the right thing because it takes a lot of courage and honesty that many don’t have. Arthur Miller in The Crucible uses courage, weakness and truth to allow the reader to better understand and relate to the characters in the book and the way of their society, during that time. Some examples to show are when John Proctor was tried for his lifeand his name, when Elizabeth Proctor was tested of her truth in the court, and when Giles Coery was pressed to death.

Examples of his pride are strewn all throughout the play. In the beginning, John did not want to confess his sin of adultery solely because he did not want to destroy his good name, and respect from everyone in the town. In Act III, John finally admits to being a lecher. When Francis and Danforth begin having doubts about John’s honesty, it shows how much of a disbelief this confession comes across as telling the reader just how respected John is. To prove himself, John says “... A man will not cast away his good name” (Miller, 1206).

The distress over the noose in the middle of the city of Salem, Massachusetts was no easy situation to be kept out of. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, the morals and values of the people of Salem were displayed in their actions when helping themselves and others be free of this dread. Upon which, cowardliness, panic, agitation, aggression, and courage weighed upon their shoulders. Courage was shown through people’s ability to speak up for themselves and remain persistent in their claims of innocence. Hysteria ignited this wave of courage amongst the people of Salem, in which those who were threatened by The Salem Witch Trials showed their courage in a variety of ways.

The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.

What makes a hero a hero? There are many traits one can have which would be described heroic. It can be their selflessness, bravery, intelligence, or even courage. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible many of these traits are expressed through many different characters. One attribute that really stands out in the play is courage.

In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is accused of performing witchcraft and contracting with the Devil. He is faced with the decision to either confess to or deny the accusations. Ultimately, Proctor chooses to deny the accusations and dies a martyr. Proctor’s decision to sacrifice himself is justified because he protected the reputation of those who died and risked being arrested to save his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor’s death is justified because he was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the reputation of others.
