Humanity is capable of doing many things, both good and bad. Humans are selfish, we prioritize what is important to us and what is not. Brutal situations such as the Holocaust show the extent that a human being will go to survive. Elie and his fellow prisoners go through many hardships, such as starving and leaving loved ones to die. Each day for them, is a blessing because they do not know when they are going to die, it could be the next day or even the next hour.

During the time when Elie was in the concentration camp many things change. His relationship was the thing that changed the most. It changed by Elie now taking care of his dad instead of the other way around. Also the death of Elie's father affected Elie in a negative way.

The cruelty of the German officers at the concentration camps change Elie’s personality throughout the novel. At the beginning of the novel, Elie is deeply religious and spends most of his time studying Judaism. However, by the end of the novel, Elie believes that God has been unjust to him and all the other Jews, and has lost most of his faith. The cruelty of the German officers also changed the other Jews as well. The events of the Holocaust forces the prisoners to fend for themselves, and not help others.

Elie’s identity has been reshaped by the sensation of feeling meaningless because his name is accustomed around his personality which defines one’s identity. Thus without a name, Eliezer has no individual personality or identity. Auschwitz is eminent for their impeccable lifestyle and cold-blooded soldiers. Eliezer and his father rely on one another to survive through the Holocaust. Together they encounter the cruelty of the Nazis, the lack of compassion from the prisoners, as well as the difficulty of simply surviving. They remain strong together unlike other father-son relationships seen in the novel. A majority of the prisoners gravitate towards self preservation while Eliezer chooses to remain with his father. Eliezer does exhibit ambivalence in continuing to help his father because the conditions of the Holocaust continually make it harder to make others a priority than oneself.

During his time in the concentration camps, he became grateful for what he had, overcame countless obstacles, and more importantly kept fighting until he was free.
