Nakedness, beatings, dogs, tattooed numbers, fire, chimney, crematoria, loneliness, silence, death,... selection. These were all methods and statements made by the Germans in an effort to dehumanize the Jews. One of Elie Wiesel’s main focuses in the book Night is on dehumanization. Germans would put Jews in harsh situations to make them suffer, to the point of death.

“Night” by Ellie Wiesel is a memoir of Ellie’s years during the Holocaust at the Nazi’s concentration camps. The book is his true story telling about the death of his friends and family,what he encountered, and how he started to lose faith in God. Ellie experienced many instances of dehumanization like when the Germans threw bread, and when he was cruelly punished. When the Front was moving closer to the camps, the Nazis moved Ellie and the others to Buchenwald. When they arrived, many Germans were watching the train while laughing and throwing bread.

The book Night by Elie Wiesel offers a harrowing account of the atrocities that were inflicted on Jews during the Holocaust. The Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment, such as being forcefully deported to concentration camps, starved, worked until exhaustion, and routinely beaten, among other forms of cruelty. The brutalization of Jews reached its peak with their systematic extermination in gas chambers and crematoria. These events offer insight into the dehumanization of Jews under Nazi rule. The book offers a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the need to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

The bond between a father and a son is perhaps a thing of beauty. It is sometimes what bonds them together to survive horrible occasions, such as the Holocaust that Elie Wiesel and his father went through. Throughout the march to the Birkenau concentration camps, some sons and fathers took advantage of their father's’ old age and used it to steal or betray them. In Elie Wiesel’s Night he and many of the other prisoners felt victimized by the guards and their use of power over them. One example of abuse and dehumanization is Franek, the foreman. He noticed that Elie had a gold crown in his mouth, Franek wanted it. When told to give it to him, Elie said no, so Franek started harassing and abusing Elie’s father. Dehumanization is the process in which Nazis gradually and slowly degrade jews to little more than “things” because they don't see jews as humans. The Nazi’s felt this process was necessary due to the fact that jews were inferior to them. The Holocaust was a horrible time in the 1940s. Hitler the leader of the Nazi’s had an idea of just having the perfect people which was having blonde hair and blue eyes. Hitler's plan was to kill the people who didn’t have these appearances. Hitler would do this by creating concentration camps that would torture, kill people in many ways which for example burning, starving them to death. They were dehumanized and treated unfairly to various extents. They were taken into various different camps also.

In which millions of Jews were innocently killed and persecuted because of their religion. As a student who is familiar with the years of the holocaust that will forever live in infamy, Wiesel’s memoir has undoubtedly changed my perspective. Throughout the text, I have been emotionally touched by the topics of dehumanization, the young life of Elie Wiesel, and gained a better understanding of the Holocaust. With how dehumanization was portrayed through words, pondering my mind the most.

Imagine knowing your fate ahead of time. That single moment would be stuck in your head, replayed every second to prevent it. This would obstruct your feeling of morals, making you only focus on your own survival. Nothing would get in your way of trying to survive. During the Holocaust, many people were faced with this moment when they stepped in a concentration camp.

Imagine going through a breaking point in life. A point to where it is so awful and unbearable. Going through life complications will and can affect an individual. Oppression can affect how oppressed people think, including loss of hope, making changes in society, and having acceptance.
