Colonial America’s democracy was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features. With features like Individual and Human Rights, Equality, and Limited Government, colonial America was continuously finding new ways to govern a new society. While, some of their strategies were undemocratic and cruel, they realized and fixed it with democratic solutions. Their efforts were enormous, and created the free land of colonial America.

However there is no doubt that there are still problems associated with it. It never explicitly addresses the rights of all the people including slaves, or of women. It’s problematic that the constitution is so highly regarded and followed even when these groups of people are left out, due to the fact that it divides the society by race and sex, and if you were apart of the persecution, it was because you were seen to be inferior, and should not have the same rights of white men. All throughout history we have become keenly familiar with some of the costs of this problem such as how african americans have been persecuted for generations even after the end of slavery. Women weren’t treated any better when you look at how they couldn’t vote until the 1930’s.

They created a unique government that permitted each individual person to have a say in the decisions about the country. The whole general idea of political rights created a well-known status that was unique to America alone.

Equality for people was the purpose of America becoming an independent nation, and the constitution disregards that in the case of slavery. The framers of the Constitution refer to slaves as "persons" or "persons held to labor or service. " The language use in the document implies an attempt to mask the actual cruelty/brutality of slavery. Not only were they attempting to hide the true conditions of slavery, they protected slavery by the taxed importation of slaves, as well. The framers of the constituion saw slavery as something positive in the economy, without seeing it as morally wrong.

Jacksonian Democracy was the supporting of the common white American. The destruction of the Federal Bank supports the common people. Jackson annihilated the bank because he viewed it as a corrupt business made to make the rich more affluent. When he destroyed the bank, he gave the money from the deposit and distributed it to smaller banks known as pet banks.

Frontier individualism encouraged democracy from its onset in its promotion. America was revolutionary in democratic political ideals, social standings, and the beginnings of religious toleration. However, many people weren’t allowed to partake in such advancements, because they weren’t of proper race, gender, or even certain religions. England leaving the colonies to fend for themselves was a historic move, allowing the colonists to create for themselves their own unique culture, where people could move up the social ladder, with no aristocracy blocking their way. Without England breathing down their necks, the colonists created radical new governments, people actually given a voice in their government for the first time, (Doc. 3) and having the ability to represent their colony in a legislative body (Doc. 6).

Free Blacks: How Free Were They in the North? During the 1860s, 46% of all free blacks lived in the North. Based on that, many would have reason to believe that the North would be a safe-haven for the free black population. That would be partially true because the abolition of slavery in the North provided some protection. But even though free blacks in the North had some freedoms, blacks lived a very restricted life with little suffrage, discrimination, limits on economic opportunities, and segregation.

An undemocratic features in Colonial America was slavery; because the colonists would be taking away someone else’s rights. Also work in processes such as religious freedoms were taking place.

The main difference between the American and French Revoultion was that one successfully converted to a democratic government and one did not. The French Revolution was not successful in forming a democratic government due to France’s history of a monarchy, economic issues and divison among its’ people. Unlike America, France had a long history of sole rulers and dictatorship which made the change to a democratic government much more difficult and ultimately impossible. America’s motto of “all men are created equal” (Doc A) was the complete opposite of France’s dividing estate class system. The third estate consisted of peasents, common people and the bourgeoisie, the second estate belonged to the Nobles, and the first was the home to the Clergy.
