Deviance & Social Control
Deviance is a behavior, belief, or trait that departs from a norm and generates a negative reaction in a particular social group. In other words deviance means the state of departing from acceptable standards. However because deviance is based on norms and beliefs something might be deviant in one culture but seem normal in another. Also because of that deviance should never be held against morals because norms and beliefs change all the time unlike morals. An example of deviance is seen in this example about going out with your friends to dinner. The first example is if you use the tiny fork to eat salad instead of the biggest. You would be breaking a norm but none of you friends

In the first example if you were in a group of people and everybody was wearing a mask when you guys went out. You would most likely wear a mask. But in the second example, if nobody in your group wears masks. You would most likely not wear masks because you would feel like you're breaking deviance. Another example includes a protest during covid-19. This is seen when a child that appears to be younger than 8 years old tossing her mask into a fire started using an anti-mask protest. With all the adults around her tossing their masks in the fire, it would be an act of deviance if the child did not throw her mask too. The child does not know better and it would appear very wrong if the child had not thrown her mask into the fire. Another example that largely affects a lot of people in the United States and the world is jail time. Because an example of punishment for breaking deviance can be seen in jail time. Once somebody breaks deviance they might be held accountable and their punishment would be to be imprisoned. Impromeinemt or known as the criminal justice system, made up of police, courts, and correction is also known as social …show more content…
Where he discusses how one must be strong with their social bonds, family and religion, civic and other groups. And how if one has strong bonds with these groups they are less likely to commit crimes. But overall the people who behave deviantly most likely have personal, environmental, or societal influences. An example can be seen as people who are deviant heroes. These people violate norms at the risk of repercussions on their own behalf. An example of a deviant hero can be seen in Colin Kaepernck who was a former professional quarterback. Even though the high chances of damaging his reputation he held his courage to kneel during the national anthem. This shows how Kaepernck broke a social norm so he would be able to speak about an important cause. Social control is the formal and informal mechanism used to elicit conformity to values and norms and thus promote social cohesion. Prime examples of social control can be seen in a punishment or something a community might do to control their social environment. A popular theory by Travis Hirschi provides a more detailed definition. Social control theory is a theory of crime that posits that strong social bonds increase conformity and decrease
For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
After reading these articles I garnered a greater insight on what deviance is and how it is formed. According to the Outsiders reading, deviance is essentially a label that is put on a person of whom commits an act or exhibits behaviors that stray from what is normal or expected. These people are therefore also labeled as “outsiders”. Outsiders in that they are seen as those who are to be placed outside of a certain group do to their deviant behaviors. There exist many views of deviance.
Crime is any act which breaks the laws of society, such as murder, rape, speeding etc. Social control is enforced by agencies such as police and the courts, more specifically defined than deviance. Deviance is behaviour which moves away from controversial norms and values such as burping, pass wind in public and queuing. It Can be positive e.g. extreme intelligence. Although in some situation in nature – time dependent of factors, place, who is involved.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
For example Deviance-which means “any behavior or physical appearance that is socially challenged or condemned, because it departs from the norm and expectations from a group”(Ferrante).
Deviance can be defined as behavior that violates social expectations and norms. Deviance can be something small like dressing like a hippy or in gothic clothing, or something big like robbing a bank. Each society has laws and rules to keep one from committing deviant acts. Colin Kaepernick is going against NFL policies, going against his duty as an American citizen, and finally, he is disrespecting the men and women who fought and died for this country. I believe Colin Kaepernick is being deviant when kneeling to the flag.
Throughout the year we’ve learned and looked upon many different social views. The sociological concepts such as social interaction ,sex and gender, religion, race and ethnicity, and deviance are very important to society and have many social effects. My favorite tv show Law and Order(Special Victims Unit) covers and demonstrates these concepts in majority of the episodes. The show Law and Order consists of real life situations and issues which causes many different societal views or opinions throughout the show. Social interaction is one of the biggest sociological concepts.
Deviance has many functions in society. Although deviance violates social norms, without it, we would not have rules, so it helps form, guide, and shape society’s norms and goals. Social norms are different from culture to culture. Norms that may be acceptable in one culture may be frowned upon in another. Emile Durkheim quotes that “deviance and deviant behavior is an integral part of all healthy societies (Adler, 2014, p74).”
Deviant behavior is the behavior that is different from the most powerful norms of the society or can also be defined as odd or unacceptable behavior. In sociological way deviance is simply any violation of societal norms. There are many reasons why a person has deviant behavior which includes biological , psychological and sociological explanations. the most popular sociological theories are Structural Strain Theory which was developed by Robert K merton as an addition of the functional point of view on deviance. The theory discovers the origin of deviance that these are caused by the difference
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
Many groups or cultures have different views on what is considered deviant.
Deviance is a term used when a person violates a social normality. Deviance can be minor or they can be extreme. Using public behavior for example, if a person were to walk around without shoes in public, it would be considered odd and deviant behavior. Or if a person invaded someone 's space it would be considered rude and questionable behavior. My reasoning for not breaking social normality is simple: to break a social normality would be considered odd and I would rather not be percieved as such.
As defined by Edwin Lemert, primary deviance, “ is polygenic, arising out of a variety of social, cultural, and psychological factors” (Lemert 1951). This is the type of deviance that occurs initially and does not necessarily have a deep impact on an individual’s life. Lemert could argue that everyone has performed acts of primacy deviance but this primary deviance does not associate completely with the deviant label. Those who commit acts of primary deviance often do not know that they are going against the norm or it is out of their usual character to act in a deviant manner. For example, a 4.0 student who decides to steal a small snack from a gas station is classified under primary deviance because it is an initial isolated incident.
My definition of deviant is something that is not the norm, it is different and it is obviously different. Some examples of my deviant behavior are that I drink. I don’t consider that to be deviant because I am 21 and it is legal for me to drink. In my culture it is deviant behavior to drink because the norm is to not drink at all regardless of age. It is seen as abnormal and bad, Another behavior of mine that is deviant is that I date boys that aren’t of my religion or culture.
Acts that are viewed as deviant vary between social orders. Deviance can be said to be socially built; the general public chooses what is degenerate, individuals or an individual can be named as aberrance because of their societal position, race, ethnicity
