Dominance over others Most people have the desire to establish dominance on others and have power over them even if they do not admit it. This aspect is quite common in people to be trying to obtain dominance. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck it is set in the Great Depression, the novel tells the story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie who both try to get a job and own their own farm. Some people George and Lennie meet have attempted to try and establish dominance over them. Steinbeck shows, through multiple people’s personalities that most of them desire dominance and power over others. Steinbeck demonstrates threw Curley the desire of dominance over other people. When Curley walks in after seeing George and Lennie and trying to get Lennie to talk he says “By christ, he’s gotta talk when he’s spoke to [...] well, nex time you answer when you're spoke to”(Steinbeck 25-26). Curley demands an answer from Lennie and denies any responses from George like he is in a higher state of power than they are. Curley says that Lennie needs to talk …show more content…
Curley does not take it litely and he “stepped over Lennie like a terrier, “What the hell you laughin at? [...] Then Curley’s rage exploded “come on ya big bastard, get on your feet, no big-son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me”(Steinbeck 62). This represents Curley’s rage when he gets his power and dominance over them destroyed and gets his pride torn apart. Even though Curley gets his dominance torn apart he attempts to get in a fight with Lennie to try to get it back. Although he could have fought anybody he decided to pick a fight with the weakest willed person who would panic if he was in a fight. Steinbeck uses words such as “terrier” meaning an animal who is fearless and is guarding his pride and
Universally, it’s known for people in different time periods to share the same characteristics. In the 1930’s, people were racist and migrant workers travelled all over America. In the 1990’s, society was developing into what it is today. Specifically, an uprise of advanced technology and architecture. Although the time periods differ immensely, the people of those time periods are very similar.
This becomes relevant during the tragic ending to the book when Curley hunts down Lennie and vows to kill him. Curley’s dislike of men larger then him only amplifies his rage for Lennie killing his wife. Question’s for the Author: Why does Curley have so much ownership over his wife? Why does Lennie disobey George and speak when he is not supposed to?
Steinbeck’s use of animal imagery emphasizes Lennie’s notable strength compared to others. The men mock Curley, and he tries to push his authority onto Lennie by fighting him, thinking he can re-establish his “boss” status with the men by showing the power he holds over others. He attacks Lennie for smiling as the men mock him, but Lennie was dreaming of his future, not mocking him, and at first Lennie just stands there. When Lennie finally fights back, he stops Curley just by crushing his hand in his fist, and “Curley [is] white and shrunken now, and his struggling [becomes] weak. He [stands] crying, his
Of Mice and Men is a novel known across the globe, its delicate tone and emphasis on humanity and the struggles of the world locks the readers in. What dazzles readers most about this folk classic is how it is expressed in a way that all can understand, but few comprehend the deep and dark turn of events that lie between the lines of the book at first glance. The book isn’t referenced so often for its events in the past, but more for how it is related to the present as well as the future. The main issue discussed in this masterpiece is inequality, this subject applies to not only those of the past, but to everyone in every circumstance across the world today. Although it’s the 21st century, this issue is still present in everyday life.
He wants to be equal to everyone and have the same chances as everyone else. When he says “You ain’t wanted in my room.” He is shunning the people who try to care about him by repeating what Curley and his wife do to him. Steinbeck used this quote because this shows the struggle of the lower social classes, this also shows how hard it is to thrive when you are constantly oppressed.
̈. ̈(Steinbeck 64).In this quote, power has been shown by Curley over Lennie. Lennie laughed at Curley like everyone did, but Curley was trying to show everyone that he is strong and decided to start fighting with Lennie because he has a disability even that Curley knows that Lennie is stronger than him and could beat him.but Lennie didnt want to hurt him or to get in trouble because he knows that curly in
Slide 1 “Violence can be used for good… justice”. Slide 2 Justice always involves action, and if power is abused, justice cannot be enforced. This justice is explored in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and in McTeigue’s V for Vendetta. Through many literary and film techniques, both composers explore modern issues with the distribution of justice experienced in the world today. Slide 3
Lennie is even warned to avoid Curley because of the amount of trouble that will cause; Lennie doesn’t “want no trouble… [and has] never done nothing to him.” (Steinbeck 60) he is scared without ever having met
Of Mice and Men might be an old story but it stays true to its theme of friendship and conflict. In Of Mice and Men it's really about two men, Lennie and George who are faced with lots of obstacles because of their outside appearances but internally they are very opposite to their body shapes from first glance. Lennies this big tough guy but on the inside he struggles from day to day life because of his mental disability. George is vice versa just because he is small doesn't account to anything George tends to want things his way and has more of a restricted personality but Lennie and George have something in common they both have each others backs like a true friendship. Steinbeck's “ Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly.
In the text we can clearly tell that Curley has a major superiority complex which can be seen in two main points in the book. The first example is when Curley called Lennie out for not speaking at their first meeting which is seen in this quote. “Curley lashed his body around. “By Christ he’s gotta speak when he’s spoke to. What the hell are you getting’ into it for” (25).
Does power affect your relationships? If so, is it healthy? In the realistic fiction novella Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck writes about about itinerant workers in the Great Depression in the Salinas Valley in California. There are relationships in the novella that reflect the theme power, and he writes how power plays a role in these relationships. The theme power, shown in competence, gender, and race, affects relationships.
There are two reasons Curley wants to kill Lennie. The first reason is because he is a big guy, and Curley hates big guys. The second reason is because Lennie killed his wife. It states in “Of Mice and Men” that “Curley gon’ta wanta get ‘im lynched. Curley’ll get ‘im killed.”
In the novel of “Of Mice and Men” power and friendship is the very bases of the story. There are many people with power in the book but I specifically was interested in Curley’s power. Curley is the son of the Ranch’s boss and he is very spoiled. He does not listen to rules and usually gets away with any trouble he makes or gets into.
The battle for equality has been a problem for many years. Many people have strived for many changes throughout history, which directly and indirectly changed how people treat each other. As people strive towards equality, more struggles with reference to sexism, ableism, and racism awaits. The novel takes place in the 1930s, the Great Depression. The Great Depression is the worst economic downfall in U.S. history.
The point of physical violence has not been touched upon. In the midst of the rising action in the novel, Curley starts to beat Lennie because he was grinning at the thought of the ranch, but Curley thought that he was laughing at him. Lennie made a remark that he does not want to fight him. Consequently, Curley assaults Lennie, and he accepts it. It was only at George’s call for permission that Lennie crushed his hand.
