When reading To Kill a Mockingbird a fiction novel by Harper Lee,there are atrocities that will cause the reader to empathy for the people, because the people are misunderstood and disliked , this going for almost every character in the book in their own ways To have empathy is to understand what somebody is going through, being able to understand because you probably have been through the same or similar things. I think that a man more so a child should never go throw some of the things that Tom Robinson and Walter Cunningham go through , there misunderstood by everyone, mistreated by the other folks, both live and are victims of poverty . Tom Robinson and I are both misunderstood , hurt and victims of poverty making him one of …show more content…
Tom was convicted of raping, Mayella said this to excuse him "I got something to say an' then I ain't gonna say it no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me and' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't want a do nothing' about it then you're all yellow stinking' cowards, stinking' cowards, the lot of you." (pg. 251 TKAM) Tom was getting accused of raping Mayella when we all know his didn’t. Lots of the times I get the blame for things that I did not do and I still get in trouble for it. As a black male there is so much hate in the world let alone in the south in the 1930’s such as “In ones and twos, men got out of the cars. Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door. Atticus remained where he was. The men hid him from view. “He in there, Mr. Finch?” (pg. 202 TKAM) one man asked the men want Tom killed and hurt. I can relate …show more content…
Walter was poor and “He didn’t forget his lunch, he didn’t have any”(pg. 26 TKAM) Walter never had anything to eat meaning he had nothing at home to eat. When I was younger I remember having nothing at home to eat sometimes the schools I went to, you would have to pay to get lunch and I did not have the money to eat sometimes. Walter would never "took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have. They don’t have much, but they get along on it.”(pg. 26 TKAM) Walter did not take anything from no one he could not pay. I did the same thing most of the time; someone would try to give me something but I would play it off and not take it and act like everything was good. A childhood should be filled with good memories and have a nice life but this is the real world and everything is not like
Empathy Empathy is shown in To Kill A Mockingbird by Atticus standing up for Tom Robinson, Jem realizing that Arthur Radley is not crazy; he is just antisocial, and Scout feeling remorse for tormenting Arthur throughout her childhood. Atticus shows empathy throughout the whole book, from promising Scout that they will read every night, to taking on Tom Robinson’s trial, it’s hard to find a more genuine character. While Atticus knew that the trial may not end well, he still believed he should stand up for what is right, regardless of anyone’s skin color. Atticus was willing to fight a large group of burly men to protect Tom Robinson, it could be that he thought about what he would want others to do if he were in that situation.
Empathy. The ability to understand what someone else is going through by putting oneself in their place and situation. All throughout history, people have struggled with the concept of empathy. For example, Jews have been mistreated for hundreds of years on numerous occasions by those of an advantaged position, African Americans have been subjugated by the privileged White throughout much of American history, and this struggle is even seen today with the prejudice towards Muslims across the world. Harper Lee created a timeless piece of literature that has lived on for plenty of years because of its theme of empathy and the challenges that the characters face regarding it.
In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus told Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” What does it truly mean to walk around in someone else’s skin? How can anyone truly understand a person and know how they are feeling? That is why we have empathy. Empathy is what makes the world a better place.
Topic sentence…………… something about lack of empathy in today’s society important as book teaches why it is an important skill to have. Often nowadays people tend to ignore the feelings of others, so this novel is an amazing reminder on why empathy is so crucial in life. In the book Atticus enforces this message strongly onto his kids, which also comes across to Harper Lee’s readers. When Bob Ewell is frustrated after the trial and takes his anger out on Atticus, Atticus completely puts himself in Bob’s shoes and states to his son “I destroyed his last shred of credibility at that trial, if he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of comeback, his kinds always does.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the moral empathy is not adequately represented towards other Maycomb County folks. People are just people and no one is naturally different from anyone else, excluding the fact that there are some people who take advantage of their power. Early in the novel, the author introduces the readers to a divided society in which both, the young and old, are heavily
How can a story brimming with racism and resentment also be filled with compassion? Although the world is filled with people who do appalling things, there are still some out there who practice generosity and lead by example. In To Kill a Mockingbird, these people are characters like Scout, Atticus, or Tom. Throughout the novel, these characters and more take action to show humanity in circumstances that they don’t have to, and add a layer of compassion to the theme. In Harper Lee’s
Some of the main characters learned and demonstrated empathy, such as Atticus, Jem, the narrator’s brother, and Scout, the narrator. For instance, when Atticus is given Tom Robinson’s case by the court many of those the family once considered close turned their backs on the. One of these instances was at the jailhouse, after this situation Atticus thanked his children for making “Walter Cunningham stand in” his “shoes for a minute…” This demonstration of empathy could have, and most likely did, save Atticus’ life in the novel. Tom Robinson was also attempting to teach those in the jury and court empathy.
Maycomb County, a place in which innocent children fall under the influence of their parents who are hypocrites that hide behind their facades, making it the only “normal” Maycomb folks have come to know. Two men who may seem the exact opposite of one another really have similarities. On one side, we see Atticus Finch, an extremely wise man by nature who has solid principles and a clear sense of morality. However, we also learn about Bob Ewell, who has an evil and unadmirable nature. Nonetheless, both men may not be so different after all.
The dictionary describes empathy as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. But, you can’t look up how to feel empathy for someone. I believe that your experiences in life determine that. In To Kill a Mockingbird, (TKM), The kids, Scout and Jem each learn empathy through the events in the story. In the beginning, Atticus teaches them what the definition of empathy is, but they do not feel it until later in the book.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. To me the word empathy in “To Kill A Mockingbird” means “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” suggests that empathy is a universal feeling, but everyone experiences it in different occasions and in different ways. Many people empathize through real life experiences. Scout is one of those people.
In Bell Hooks’ essay, “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, Hooks addresses and clarifies the misinterpretations that people have of the assumptions made of the poor, how poor individuals are viewed in human culture and how the poor are represented on television. She helps the audience understand how these assumptions are wrong. Hooks begins her first point by addressing the false assumptions that are made every day about poor people through expressing her own experiences.
To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel which teaches us many themes like empathy by always following right morals and doing what is right. Inside those life lessons the novel also teaches us something important. Readers see the power of an 8-year-old to defeat a mob, making them acknowledge what they are doing and “stand in the shoes of another”. We read that a total stranger who is isolated from society (Boo Radley) helps a pair of kids and ends up saving their lives. People do bad acts because of power, or maybe they don’t know better, or (most of the time)
