Repetition of Failure Offspring and their guardians possess unique and influential relationships that can either benefit or harm the individual. In the novel Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, there are instances in which poor parenting causes for dilemmas to arise deeper into the novel. As a parent, it is expected to meet the responsibility of properly raising the child, and preparing it to accustom to society. The values and guidelines one’s guardians set early on influence the parental styles of that individual in the future. This notion is portrayed often in the novel through Victor Frankenstein's boyhood, and later on his treatment of his creation, identified as the “monster,” for the duration of its youth. From the inferior parenting of the Frankenstein parents, the next two generations dealt with the aftermath. Cases of bad parenting can be found worldwide, from school shootings, to drug overdoses, to cases of bullying, the mistakes children can make are endless. Can the parents be the ones to receive the blame for the children doing wrong? Undoubtedly, the lessons, and morals taught from parents to children play a massive role in the development of the child. Their characteristics of their actions and words show the relationship that these people have within their families. And it was not a caring-and-love one family relationship. They let their tradition tear family apart, which they can stop if they are willing to do it. Throughout reading this short story, it informs the audiences that each individual character in this story have similar characteristics--loneliness-- except children, who does not fully understand family bonds. This story also shows their appearance of selfishness.

Initially, characters in Frankenstein not taking responsibility show the reader the potential dangers of pain and death in numerous situations in the novel. The reader of Frankenstein sees various examples of Shelley’s warnings of the dangers in not taking responsibility in the first couple chapters in the novel. Children growing up without a father figure can develop emotional and/or behavioral problems. In some cases, these children even become aggressive and get into trouble with the law (“Statistics on the Father Absence” n.p.). Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein examines how the presence of a mother, negatively or positively, affects the development of a child. Victor’s mother, Caroline Frankenstein, dies while Victor is still a young man (he is about 17 years old), breaking their relationship between mother and son. Because Victor loses his bond with his mother, he is unable to act as a mother would when he creates his creature. Caroline Frankenstein’s absence in Victor’s life creates a disunion between the mother and child bond, which is evident in Victor’s creation and his fragmented relationship with the creature. In 1818 Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, a novel that follows Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious man on his journey to defy the natural sciences. In Volume I of the novel, Victor discusses his childhood, mentioning how wonderful and amazing it was because of how his family sheltered him from the bad in the world. “The innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven, whom to bring up to good, and whose future lot it was in their hands to direct to happiness or misery, according as they fulfilled their duties towards me” (35). When Victor brings up his childhood, he suggests that parents play a strong in how their kids turn out, either "to happiness or misery" (35).
