Case 02: FoldIt Gamification Use : Healthcare Research FoldIt was developed by the University of Washington’s Centre for Game Science in collaboration with the Biochemistry department with the intention of deciphering a crystal structure for one of the AIDS causing viruses called the the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M - PMV), which, for 15 years, many of the top PhD scientists have been trying to decipher. FoldIt utilizes a game-like puzzle interface that allows people from all over the world to play and compete in figuring out various protein structures that fit a researcher's criteria. More than 240,000 players registered for the game and competed viciously against each other and found a solution to the structure of the M-PMV was found in 10 days, thus creating a major breakthrough in the AIDS research field What is govNov? govNow is a government-citizen interaction portal, where citizens can lodge complaints, commend or discuss government employees, their society and current political practices within their district, state or …show more content…
According to multiple sources, the youth do not vote because they are either completely oblivious to the situation or generally they lack trust in the political process and are of the opinion that politics doesn't serve their interests. But what these youngsters don't realise is that the main reason politics does not serve their interests is because they do not vote. It youth voter turnout were at around 75% rather than 20%, issues such as student debt and education policies would rise to the top of the politicians’ or political parties priority list. govNow aims to remove all traces of misapprehensions and misconceived notions about the political system by providing the youngsters with a safe environment to interact and exchange ideas not only with other young people but also with people more experienced, experts on these subjects and even with the political candidate or government employees
Bruce Whitehall’s Game Evaluation Sheet can be used to rate games (Fitzgerald & Keyes, 2019). In a randomized controlled trial of 103 second-year undergraduate nursing students, Tan et al (2017) found that the serious game intervention improved the students' confidence and knowledge level of the blood transfusion material, but no statistically significant improvement in performance of the skill tested. Bliemel and Ali-Hassan (2014) concluded that game-based simulations can be used to apply complex concepts in a powerful way but recommend further studies to explore the impact of gaming in a learning environment. In a review of literature related to gaming in nursing education, Pront, Mueller, Koschade, and Hutton (2018) established that while additional research is needed, evidence exists that suggests gaming in nursing education produces positive outcomes which are both effective(valid)and repeatable
All american citizens are raised with the knowledge that they are required to participate in the governance of their nation. This is, perhaps, at odds with the execution of that participation. One of the issues with most individuals growing up in our society is one of agency. Many young people are told they are not ready to make decisions for themselves. That they lack experience and knowledge.
“The more one contemplates the hot viruses, the less they look like parasites and the more they begin to look like predators” (Preston 136). There is many different viruses around the planet; each spreading and mutating, jumping from species to species, picking out and taking down their prey. Richard Preston identifies viruses as predators in his novel, The Hot Zone, to show just how lethal they really are; the worst being the hot agent Ebola. The Ebola virus is the most dangerous hot agent, with high fatality rates, mutations, and limited survivors.
By combining Allen’s and Chamber’s ideas we can strengthen the way in which political education can promote these values. However, Chambers also raises important critiques of the current system of citizenship and democracy, which may limit the effectiveness of Allen's approach. One of Chambers' main critiques is that citizenship currently has exclusionary and unequal bounds. She argues that citizenship is often exclusive to certain demographics, which results in the exclusion of some groups from political participation and influence. So Allen’s reformation of political education which emphasizes democratic participation may strengthen these inequalities rather than challenge them.
In Austria, where the voting age has been lowered to 16, two thirds of the 16-18 year old age group voted. This proves that if we were to reduce the voting age, it could encourage younger citizens to become even more politically aware and even inspire some to pursue a career in politics. Personally, I think it is an unfair assumption that all millennials are considered to be narcissistic when certain studies have shown that they are intensely passionate about global warming, the corrupt government of North Korea and other pressing issues affecting the whole world. Granted, you do not often see two teenagers arguing over whether this year’s budget aided global warming research or not, but these young Australian citizens have their own way of expressing their political views. They start petitions online, call out politicians on social media and even go out to protests, standing up for what they believe in.
OUTBREAK Questions: 1. When and where was the Motaba virus first discovered, and what did the government do in order to try and destroy it? The Motaba virus was first discovered in an Motaba River Valley, Zaire in a mercenary camp in 1967. The government sent two soldiers to bomb the camp and try to destroy it, so that the disease would not spread.
In this day in age, 16- and 17-year-olds are as well informed and engaged with political issues as older citizens. They spend most of their time in class learning about the government,
Yet, to avoid this, we can teach them how not to be swayed at school. According to the Electoral Reform Society, they support young citizens at the age of 16 in how to vote and what decision making they should do. If teenagers get the support from authorized adults who can lead young adults to the right path through society, I believe we can trust their opinions. The Fulcrum exclaims that the Ontario Government already recognizes that 16 year olds can understand the issues and independent judges on them. From this, we can say that adults keep full eye on young adults and what kind of thinking they have towards politics so it is safe for teenagers to start voting.
Waking up the minds of youth to do everything to prevent such extremely abusive form of government to occur. This book is a thumb up and highly recommendable, especially for the young people. This will provide them broader knowledge interrelated with their own society, an eye open curiosity to bear their minds on their governmental issues and the unjust social hierarchy. Also, what I like about this book is that albeit it doesn’t gave political solution, it made an impact to me that every government has its flaws and can never be perfect.
Or through being a local youth councilor which is shown as 85% of secondary schools have school councils and about 20,000 young people being active in local youth councils. It also goes as far being a member of the youth parliament which has 600 elected MYPs, each serving for 12 months and voted in by their peers, this was established in 2000, the UK Youth Parliament also host debates within in Parliament since 2008. This is further proof that 16 and 17 year olds are more than capable of being able to understand politics and completely defeats the argument that they aren’t able to comprehend
Although video games may be a bit more dramatic than real-life war, teens will discover strategies to fight, and hide. Video games are a highly beneficial activity for youths everywhere, and they should be kept. According to the article, (Mohammadi 2014) “How online gamers are solving science’s biggest problems”, in 2011, people playing Foldit, an online puzzle game about protein folding, resolved the structure of an enzyme that causes an Aids-like disease in monkeys. Researchers had been working on the problem for 13 years, yet the gamers had solved it in three weeks.
The use of technology in the present generation has a positive effect on teenagers and it is beneficial for the economy. Although his beliefs might have changed regarding the use of gamification, Dr. Edwards resistance and attitude might have affected his students’ perception of it. Furthermore, his strong recommendation in addition of Dr. Chad to use Voki.com as an avatar-creation tool caused some levels of disengagement among their students, although initially they were highly motivated to engage in the assignment as inferred from quantitative and qualitative
The younger generation has been recently observed protesting the recent election of President Donald Trump. One of the protests most commonly talked about was the “Women’s Marches” around the world; these marches were to bring attention to women’s fear that their rights would be compromised. One of the many controversial topics that they were protesting was the possibility of President Trump following through with defunding planned parenthood- therefore making safe abortions and affordable birth control harder to obtain. Overall this not only demonstrates a younger generations point of view on post material value importance because of their basic rights having been secured, but it also shows their interest in politics and the effects that they hope to have on political
