The Haudenosaunee people are given principles to explicate for appropriate conduct to all of creation and its beings. The creation story illustrates that all of creation has a responsibility in growth, development, and sustainability; the great law of peace demonstrates how to live a “good mind”; the good message describes how to treat one another; the original instructions depict between the right and wrong doing’s; the symbolism of the wampum belts explicates the history of the Haudenosaunee people. This paper examines the main cultural influences for indigenous youth, and challenges they face growing up. In particular, it will explore the ways in which Indigenous youth today continue to be affected, connected and interdependent to both a dominant white culture and indigenous culture. It also includes the reasons why the indigenous youth of Australia continue to be marginalized, oppressed and stereotyped while growing up in a society that claims to be an egalitarian democratic country. National identity is believed to be a general concept that referred to a broad set of codes with a shared understanding within a nation, and the sense of belonging that is reinforced through myths, symbols, media activities, and everyday practices (Carter, 2006, p. 7; Van Krieken et al., 2017, pp. 234-244). There was originally 500 separate ‘nations’ which held different cultures, beliefs and languages.

Abstract Being an aborigine in a white dominated society is a complicated identity. Australia, one of the white governed nations, also owns many aboriginal tribes. They lived harmonious lives in the early period. The purpose of this essay is to acknowledge the conditions that impact upon Indigenous students’ education. This will be reached through analysis of the concepts of race, racism and whiteness in Australia. These key understandings of Indigenous students’ will be incorporated into my own critical pedagogy in order to demonstrate how I would teach for reconciliation in my classroom. The concepts of race, racism and whiteness have produced unequal outcomes for Indigenous students to a vast degree in Australian society. I particularly agreed with the authors’ argument about blending cultural and academic knowledge (McKinley & Brayboy, 2005, p. 435).
