Reflection On The Odyssey

Odysseus is known as a very honorable man recognized as brave, noble, and a hero in the Odyssey. He is described one way, but his actions are contradicting towards his distinguishable character. In Homer’s The Odyssey, it can be argued that Odysseus is too deceitful, narcissistic, and pretentious to be considered an honorable hero. To support this, I will be analyzing the use of the word “honor” in situations where Odysseus was described as a man with great honor by the gods.

In the Odyssey by homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the Cyclops encounter is one of Odysseus’ greatest flaws and successes at the same time. It began to go downhill when Odysseus lies about his name and the condition of his ship. When him and his men are captured by the cyclops Odysseus claims his name is nobody, and his ship was wrecked, he does this to aid his escape plan and as a tactic to guard his name and men. When the escape plan is put into play, Odysseus stabs the cyclops in the eye with a red hot spear all the while him lying about his name was put into use because the cyclops yells, in agonizing pain, nobody stabbed him in the eye, this causes the other cyclops to lower there guard and not go to assist their brethren. Journal 1 A: Homer has a very unique method of beginning the Odyssey. He starts the book in the action. After we hear about Odysseus's situation in the first passages Homer starts to focus on Odysseus's son, Telemachus. Telemachus is coming the age where he will take over his fathers role as household master that he left unfilled approximately twenty years ago. He is already showing signs of maturity when he ordered the suitors to leave and eventually got them legally ejected.

1. Homer’s hearty descriptions fill the tale with so much beauty and imagination. His tale becomes real before your eyes, and grows with every place that is visited. Every land is a new adventure drawing the reader in. His words flow with glorious succession in detail that paints a picture in the imagination of the most uninventive minds.

Before Odysseus and his shipmates landed on the island of Helios, they were warned by Circe and Tiresias not to harm any of the animals, so he made his men swear not to hurt the animals. They stayed for a few days because the winds were strong.

In society, many people treat others differently based on what they may wear or like. This type of behavior dates back to the early times and can be found in literature such as The Odyssey. Written by Homer, The Odyssey depicts Odysseus' journey home from the Trojan War. In The Odyssey, the poem shows through a social lens how the high-status and joyful people treat the lower class. Respect and kindness were highly valued in ancient Greek culture.

We came up with the conclusion of Jesus assuming that the centurion is challenging his honor by sending the Jewish elders instead of going to Jesus himself for assistance. However, examples within the literary narrative of the Odyssey leaves the discussion open with regards to his leadership. Thus, the question of leadership supersedes the topic of Arete. Was Odysseus the ideal leader or did he portray undesirable leadership tendencies? The examples that will presented will illustrate that Odysseus hubris, risk taking prowess, and at times unwillingness to follow instructions often placed his crew in danger as he journeyed Ithaca.

The Odyssey highlights one man, Odysseus, a man filled with excessive pride, experiencing the wrath of the god Poseidon. He expects to arrive at his home, Ithaca, safely to reunite with his wife, Penelope, but unfortunately faces many temptations and setbacks. Due to the challenges he faces, it prevents him from arriving home as early as he thought he would.

The Penelopiad as a modernized, fresh view of a vaguely described character, which originated from the Odyssey named, Penelope. Penelope is an obscure or cryptic female character who is interpreted to be a cunning, sly, secretive, intelligent, passionate character that can be compared to Shakespeare’s Juliet.
