It has been commonly said that heroes are not born naturally; instead, heroes emerge in times of hardship or in the face of adversity. A hero is someone who is deeply valued in every culture, but what traits define a hero? A person can be a hero if he is courageous, going beyond or where no one dares to go. A hero may be brave, possesses great strength, and rises to the occasion to overcome immense obstacles for the love of others. Perhaps it is his wit or their ability to get out of trouble that makes them a

He is praised by the Goddess Athena through a conversation with Telemachus, "Your father had no equal for cunning, and very few for strength and skill in battle” (pg. 8) In other words, he is witty and has great strength. These two ideals were put to good use when Odysseus and his men were trapped in the cavern of the Cyclops Polyphemus. To save them, he devised an ingenious escape plan. He got Polyphemus drunk and stabbed him in the eye at the right moment. He then tricked the Cyclops into thinking that “Nobody”, not himself Odysseus, poked his eye. “Nobody is attacking me,” cried the Cyclops (pg 104). This heroic effort allowed his men to escape undetected. Having wit, strength, and courage helped Odysseus escape an unfortunate situation and his skill made even the gods applaud him. Having these traits as a hero is important because it makes escaping dangerous escalations easier and it helps a hero gain success with less
He shows his intelligence by telling the Cyclops a fake name that would benefit Odysseus and show how stupid the Cyclops was. He also showed intelligence by dressing up as a beggar and thinking ahead of the situation. He is a leader by leading his men to freedom from the Cyclops's cave and not letting the rest of his crew be tempted by the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus shows his acts of heroism and sacrifices to see his wife, son and rule
What traits do heros hold, that lead them to overcome adversity? Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, is a mythical story that uses similes and epithets. In the novel, Odysseus, a wise Greek hero is leading his men from Troy to Ithaca. Odysseus’ most important quality is intellect. Odysseus outsmarts the Cyclopes and escapes the supernatural foe by using his intelligence.
In the Odyssey by homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the Cyclops encounter is one of Odysseus’ greatest flaws and successes at the same time. It began to go downhill when Odysseus lies about his name and the condition of his ship. When him and his men are captured by the cyclops Odysseus claims his name is nobody, and his ship was wrecked, he does this to aid his escape plan and as a tactic to guard his name and men. When the escape plan is put into play, Odysseus stabs the cyclops in the eye with a red hot spear all the while him lying about his name was put into use because the cyclops yells, in agonizing pain, nobody stabbed him in the eye, this causes the other cyclops to lower there guard and not go to assist their brethren. All
At one point Odysseus meets Polyphemus, who is a Cyclops. He is also a son of Poseidon. Odysseus had to save him and his men from becoming the Cyclops meal. The author writes, “ lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye, and I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright tuns a drill…” ( lines 289- 293). Odysseus shows his strength and determination when battling against this monster.
Odysseus bravery, courage, and cleverness was a great help throughout his journey for faceing many things. With all of these qualities Odysseus is a epic hero thought out this whole story.
To most people, a hero is a brave person with an amazing costume. Heroes usually have super-powers and are always saving people. But it takes much more than this to be know as an a hero. Some characteristics of an hero are super-natural help, leaving on a journey . In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows many traits of an hero.
One quality that separates Odysseus from the many other heroes of his time is the ability
After blinding the cyclops, Polyphemus, Odysseus can not stand the thought of no one ever knowing his accomplishment, so he jeers at the cyclops and tells him that Odysseus of Ithaca is who blinded him. Obviously, Polyphemus is enraged, and since Odysseus had just basically given him his address, the cyclops prays to Poseidon, wishing that Odysseus never returns home. For the rest of the time Odysseus is at sea, he is dogged by Poseidon, as the surly god sends storm after storm to harry Odysseus and prevent his safe return home.
For example, he is able to outsmart the Cyclops Polyphemus, which requires both intelligence and resourcefulness. He is also able to resist the temptation of the Sirens, showing his strength of character and willpower. In addition to his bravery and intelligence, Odysseus
He got him drunk and when he fell asleep his men gouged a sharpened beam into Polyphemus’ eye. Due to Polyphemus being blind, Odysseus and his men escaped by hiding under the Cyclops rams. When they reached by the ships Odysseus was bubbling at the thought of his successes. He was able to deceive a giant Cyclops with the power of his intelligence. He continued to taunt Polyphemus and throw insults at him, eventually shouting out his identity, “if ever mortal man inquire/ how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him/ Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye” (9.549-51).
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
Throughout the book he also demonstrates skill. This helps him fight his way through the many obstacles he faces trying to get home. Resilience is another very important thing that Odysseus displays across the entirety of the book. This is important because it is what keeps Odysseus going on his journey home. All of this joint demonstrates that not
During The Odyssey, the hero and king of Ithaca, Odysseus, shows restraint which I think is the most important trait for a hero to exhibit. A very good example of this would be when he and his men were with Polyphemus. His men wanted to leave but he said to stay and see what Polyphemus looked like. Eventually when they had gotten trapped in and Polyphemus’s cave and Polyphemus has fallen asleep, Odysseus had the chance to drive a large stick into him and kill him.
Odysseus was a man of great stature and strength; however, Odysseus was not only physically strong, but mentally strong as well (Olson). We can see Odysseus’ mental strength, or cunning, and bravery when he is in the den of Polyphemus and devises the plan to save him and his crew by calling himself nobody and stabbing out the cyclops’ eye. He also recognizes that he
What qualifies a person to be called a hero? Officially a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Most people think of a superhero, like Batman or Spiderman, or someone closer to them such as their mother or their life-saving doctor. Heroes tend to be the main character in a story. Beowulf and Odysseus are two famous epic heroes in the texts Beowulf and The Odyssey.
