I’m writing to you to inform you that your colony of Georgia is going great, now. The Good ship Anne was perfect and wonderful for the journey. It took exactly 57 days to get to place called Charleston, South Carolina on January 13th, 1733. Even when we didn’t have the supply to keep going such a food and clean water, we worked out our problems and got through them, out of the 114 passengers only 2 infants didn’t make it. When we got to Charleston we went to man named John Musgrove to ask permission to use Mary Musgrove as a translator. It required Mary so we could talk to Chief Tomochichi and ask if we could build close to their land, he said yes. Georgia was originally for the charity of the people in debtor’s prison to get a fresh start. In the end the king let all the rich people go and NO debtors got to go. In the charter of 1732 it states “that many of our poor subjects are, through misfortunes and want of employment, reduced to great necessity, insomuch as by their labor they are not able to provide a maintenance for themselves and families.” This proves that Georgia did have charity and that through hard times of the settlers lives, Oglethorpe helped them through and gave them hope. However, the main reason in Oglethorpe’s eye for Georgia was to help the debtors and free them but, it didn’t happen. So the main charity of Georgia didn’t work and turned up as a failure. (8

In his writing, the author describes the personality of Africans and their desire to escape from slavery, going through obstacles on their path to freedom. John Thornton is primarily an Africanist, with a specialty in the history of West Central Africa before 1800. His work has also carried him into the study of the African Diaspora, and from there to the history of the Atlantic Basin as a whole, also in the period before the early nineteenth century. Let us begin with George, Celia’s understandably treacherous slave lover, and his unreasonable demands that set Celia’s case into motion. George’s actions are an example of the common frustration and desperation of slave men who had no control over the sexual abuse of their loved ones by white masters (McLaurin 139-140). His was a reaction to a smoldering attack upon his masculinity, an attack that was a direct result of the dehumanization upon which slavery rested. Because the South was a slave society, this master-slave relationship structure echoed throughout every other aspect of southern life (Faragher, 204 & 215). In Celia’s case, we see this truth through Virginia and Mary Newsom’s position of powerlessness.
In Gabriel’s Rebellion: The Virginia Conspiracies of 1800 & 1802, Douglas R. Egerton examines the events that led Gabriel to form his emancipation plan, and the subsequent aftermath that resulted. The British colonies in the Chesapeake region and those of the New England region were both similar yet different in certain ways. One because both the colonist that settled there were looking for new opportunities. However, it was mostly second son aristocrats, which means the first born usually inherits the better half of the father’s riches. Their lives in England had either been mistreated or they were unable to flourish economically. Regardless of whether they were searching the land for expansive homesteads, religious freedom, or exchanging and merchant opportunities, the colonist in both regions were searching for another land in the New World.
LaPlante’s main purpose in writing American Jezebel is to answer questions many people have had about Anne Hutchinson’s life throughout this country’s existence and to help Hutchinson “claim her rightful place as America’s founding mother” (LaPlante xxi). LaPlante’s American Jezebel is at times difficult to follow. It tells the story of Anne Hutchinson’s trial in Massachusetts, yet throughout the telling adds in additional facts. These facts are relevant to the book yet takes the reader off track for entire chapters at times. This makes it challenging for the reader to understand the story in its entirety.
William Moraley’s failure in the American colonies was not due to laziness but being at the wrong place at the wrong time. His hard work and motivation to better his life just didn’t work in his favor. Even before his journey to America, Moraley had a string of bad luck. After his father’s death, he quarreled with his mother for his rightful fortune. But unable to acquire these funds he was reduced to poverty.
The early Virginia and New England colonies differed politically, socially, and economically due to the situations that the settlers faced. Throughout many of the letters written about some of the experiences of the earlier settlers, one can easily see a major difference in the way of life of the two colonies. Although many of these colonies differed in the way of life, each colony faced some similar things that they each had to overcome. These challenges made a massive difference in the way that each of the colonies started out and directly influenced the future for both colonies. When these challenges are faced, many of the settlers will create the foundations of their political, social, and economic systems.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
The development of slavery and self-government in the Americas from the colonial to the revolutionary period presents two main contradictions which are important not in setting the stage for the American Revolution but also help to establish division between the colonies after the Revolution leading into the Civil War. While one contradiction applies exclusively to the Northern colonies, the other applies to all the colonies and is a key factor leading up to the American Revolution. The Civil War was a monumental bloodshed, which was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States, from 1861 to 1865. The primary cause of the war was the Southern states' desire to preserve the institution of slavery, which did not please the beliefs of the North. At the beginning of the Civil War, twenty-two million people lived in the North and 9 million people, which included four million of whom were slaves, lived in the South. The North, led by President Abraham Lincoln and his trusted generals, had more money, more factories, more horses, more railroads, and more food than the south. These advantages made the United States much more powerful than the Confederate States, which ultimately led to Northern victory.
A woman’s place in Puritan society was very limited during these times. A preface was added to her narrative by a puritan pastor as approval for her to publish her prose. Before her captivity Rowlandson didn’t know what a struggle consisted of. She was the typical housewife in a Puritan society. She never went without food, shelter, or clothing before her captivity.
A Model of Christian Charity John Winthrop The name of the document/sermon being analyzed is “A Model of Christian Charity” by John Winthrop. It was written on board the ship Arbella on route to America/ The New World where they were to set up a colony. The colony of Massachusetts, a colony of puritans (1). An analysis of the sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” reveals to us how this piece of document was very important for creating and maintaining the Massachusetts colony and for the puritans.
Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672) has been a long-lasting leading figure in the American literature who embodied a myriad of identities; she was a Puritan, poet, feminist, woman, wife, and mother. Bradstreet’s poetry was a presence of an erudite voice that animadverted the patriarchal constraints on women in the seventeenth century. In a society where women were deprived of their voices, Bradstreet tried to search for their identities. When the new settlers came to America, they struggled considerably in defining their identities. However, the women’s struggles were twice than of these new settlers; because they wanted to ascertain their identities in a new environment, and in a masculine society.
