Fahrenheit 451 Critical Thinking Essay

A dystopian society is dehumanizing, unpleasant, and completely unlike modern American society. Or is it? There are many similarities and differences between dystopian societies and modern American society. Three examples are in the book Fahrenheit 451, the film “2081”/”Harrison Bergeron”, and the novel The Selection. These similarities and differences can be represented in first responders, handicaps, and jobs.

As Confucius once said, “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.” That quote ties beautifully into one of the main themes of the book “Fahrenheit 451”, which will be explained later on in-depth. A student conducting a text analysis and review of “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury will expound on the story’s strengths, weaknesses, major plot points and personal opinions. The books is about a future dystopian society that favors the burning of books by firemen and jailing the people in possession of them. The protagonist is a fireman named Guy Montag.

Rationale: (197 words) The question that I chose from this unit was, “to what extent do the actions and decisions Malcolm and Montag make throughout the story portray the issues within their societies?”. I was interested by this question because of how simple of a term the question referred to and how it took the term deeper. While talking about the science fiction unit the protagonist was brought up as nothing special.

Thesis: In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury conveys the message that there are many extreme changes and consequences in society once literature is abandoned; instead of gaining knowledge, other elements of media and technology are mindlessly absorbed, resulting in weak relationships, loss of intellectuality in society, and the absence of emotional challenges amongst people. In Guy’s society, relationships are distant and meaningless as a result of extreme media use. After Guy and Mildred realize they do not remember where they met, Guy makes a realization about their relationship: “He remembered thinking that if she died, he was certain he wouldn’t cry” (Bradbury 41).

Imagine a world where firemen start fires instead of putting them out. Fahrenheit 451 is set in a utopian, or dystopian to us, society, where books are burned and people rarely have real social interaction. Although Fahrenheit 451 seems nowhere close to our society, we are both alike and different to their world. The freedom of information is both very different and somewhat alike.

Bradbury characterizes the firefighters in Fahrenheit 451 as unoriginal duplicates in this passage by utilising sight and smell imagery as well as rhetorical questions to make apparent the uniformity of the society and its connection to the loss of individual identity. The characterization of Bradbury’s firefighters is accomplished through imagery to prove the uniformity of society. Having all firefighters look the same creates a certain distance between them and the rest of society, this alienation allows for easier/greater control over both the firefighters and the general population, which in turn . Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a uniquely shocking and provocative novel about a dystopian society set in a future where reading is outlawed, thinking is considered a sin, technology is at its prime, and human interaction is scarce. Through his main protagonist, Guy Montag, Bradbury brings attention to the dangers of a controlled society, and the problems that can arise from censorship. As a fireman, it is Guy's job to destroy books, and start fires rather than put them out. After meeting a series of unusual characters, a spark is ignited in Montag and he develops a desire for knowledge and a want to protect the books. Bradbury's novel teaches its readers how too much censorship and control can lead to further damage and the repetition of history’s mistakes through the use of symbolism, imagery, and motif.

In the fictional novel "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury, the two character Montag and Clarisse, lived in the future where the government is corrupted. As time evolve and the world is changing, the sense of logic become twisted in this society. The world in "Fahrenheit 451" is a place where the idea of "firemen put fires out" appeared to be "long ago" (Bradbury 25). Firemen in this society no longer put out fire, but instead going to start them. The action of a firemen spraying "kerosene" over burning fire is described as an "amazing conductor playing all the symphonies" suggest that this society is twisted (Bradbury 2).

“Did you know that once billboards were only twenty feet long? But cars started rushing by so quickly they had to stretch the advertising out so it would last” (pg.7, ch.1 The Hearth And The Salamander). I find this quote significant because it perfectly explains the lives of the people in this novel. Moving fast, not paying attention and for what? To die in a car crash at only 17?

At the same time what he has been looking for was what the society has restricted and has told people to not make any connection with. This was the imaginary rule that the society decided to set saying that books were not allowed to be own or read. This is were censorship appears with Montags characteristic. Montag comes along living a life where he was restricted from working and putting effort due to the government preferring total control over the society so they give them everything they need but not too much in order

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a classic novel that challenges authority through self-discovery and growth. The main character Guy Montag is a dedicated fireman. He enjoys his job, watching pages of books become nothing more than burnt ash. He has never questioned anything before, nor has he had a reason to. That is, until he encounters three important individuals that seem to influence a change in Montag and ultimately change his world.

Wayne Dyer once said, “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don 't know anything about.” In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, ignorance is a common theme portrayed throughout the novel. It sets the impression of how all of the characters feel due to a society that has outlawed books. Guy Montag is a firefighter, whose job is to burn the books. Yet, he often steals them without the chief firefighter, or anyone else knowing.

King has provided his opinion about education is building character. Dr. King uses his words to create an audience awareness to think for yourself isn’t the same as you may call it critical thinking. Against the common assumption that colleges should teach their students “critical reasoning,” Dr. King argues that critical thinking alone is insufficient and even dangerous. Teaching one to think critically is no small task. Most students learn by constructing knowledge based on an engaged learning process rather than by absorbing knowledge from passive sources.

In my experience, what Martin Luther King Jr. calls “thinking intensively and critically” is very different from what my high school teachers called “critical thinking”, most especially by the way Dr. King links intelligence and learning to the development of character, that is, growth as a person. Too often in my past, teachers mentioned critical thinking only as a mental activity of seeing through stereotypes, evaluating both sides of issues and understanding and accepting differences. As worthwhile as these are, I have found that high level thinking without having a more enlightened character is simply inadequate. That was a recent, very positive experience with two very nice people of different faiths.
