Boiler Room: Movie Analysis

The goofy comedy film, The Waterboy, introduces a story about Bobby Boucher, who is played by one of the most well-known New Hampshire actors, Adam Sandler. This film was directed by Frank Coraci, in 1998, and distributed by Touchstone Pictures. This film depicts a person with a disability conveying lifestyles, tropes, and a message that may be questionable. Bobby is a young man who has dedicated his life to being the world’s best water boy a football team can have. He has a high pitched voice, is white and skinny.

The novel “A Son Of A Mob” by Gordon Korman is about a teenage boy named Vince who lives in a irregular family. His dad is the most feared Mob boss in the town and his mom and brother are a part of the business. However, Vince doesn't want to deal with anything about business. The author uses high comedy and different elements of humor to convey the universal truth; follow your own path not others.

When it comes to films, I feel as if the soundtracks make them what they are. A film in which I feel as if the soundtrack shapes the overall effect of the film is "Waiting to Exhale." Waiting to exhale was a movie about four African American women who were all through different things in their lives from men, their jobs and family. There friendship bonded all of the women together and when they got together the could just exhale everything that they have been holding in this whole time and just be themselves without having to worry about anything else. The musical technique in which I feel they used is connecting the soundtrack to real life situations.

Throughout the career of writer and director Jim Sheridan, there has been a significant change to not only Irish-made films but those directed by Irish individuals as well. Sheridan has attempted to maintain a realistic balance of both local and global expectations of “Irish Films.” Mr. Sheridan has helped move Ireland away from the many stereotypes found in films about or even set in the country. One of the lasting films in Ireland was director John Ford’s The Quiet Man.

The scene when the mother is plunged into a dilemma between life and death for her children hit people’s most vulnerable emotional nerve, no matter what kind of persons they are. To the mother, she loses husband during the sudden earthquake and the twins’ lives are endangered but only one can be saved by the rescue team. In the moment of desperation, she reluctantly chooses her son instead of the daughter. On the one hand, audiences may feel sorry for the result. For parents from anywhere in the world, they would be collapsed about the same situation.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a 2005 comedy film directed by Judd Apatow and stars Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer, the titular character who has retained his innocence throughout his entire life. When his co-workers learn about his lack of experience, they make it their personal goal to help Andy “do the deed.” This film was not only responsible for launching Steve Carell to star-status, but it was also the directorial debut of Judd Apatow who later went on to direct other successful comedy films. Andy Stitzer is a grown man who works in a stockroom at tech store SmartTech and spends his free time collecting action figures, and playing video games. His coworkers David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco), and Cal (Seth Rogen) don’t really know him,

In 2015, HBO aired a six-part, true crime documentary series titled, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. Writer and director, Andrew Jarecki, examined the details of three crimes associated with Durst, including the disappearance of Durst’s first wife Kathy, the murder of his dear friend, Susan, and the murder and dismemberment of his neighbor, Morris Black. While the mini-series was met with acclaim, many – including myself – criticize The Jinx for its storytelling approach. The series seemingly blurs the lines of storytelling – for entertainment purposes – and journalism; raising many questions regarding ethics. Initially, Durst approached Jarecki regarding an interview after he saw All Good Things, a film Jarecki had released

The film ‘Good Will Hunting’ directed by Gus Van Sant is a movie which follows the life of Will Hunting who is gifted with astonishing skills for maths but whom suffered with a fear of abandonment. He developed a defense mechanism which affected his ability to create long lasting relationships. An important extract from the movie is the scene ‘ It’s not your fault’. This scene conveyed the impact of childhood traumas, the effects of suppressed emotions and the idea of soulmates. These ideas were manifested through the use of various film techniques, such as camera shots and movements, music and dialogue.

Throughout the course of one’s life, there is a constant search for some form of happiness. We may not always realize we are on the quest for it, but it’s part of human nature. In “Silver Linings Playbook” we see this happen throughout with Pat and Tiffany, who are both searching for happiness. The film is relatable to us all in that many times we go looking for happiness only to come up empty-handed.

O Brother Where Art Thou? is a film that will take you on a perilous journey with Ulysses Everett McGill and his simpleminded cohorts. This film may be set amidst the early 1930’s Great Depression era, but it still has a Homer’s Odyssey feel to it. Down in the dusty and highly racial south, Everett recruits a couple of dimwitted convicts, Pete Hogwallop and Delmar O’Donnell, to help him retrieve his lost treasure and make it back home before his wife marries another suitor.

Jumping the Broom is a light-hearted comedy about two African American families joining together for a wedding weekend to celebrate the marriage of Jason Taylor and Sabrina Watson at her wealthy family’s estate in Massachusetts. After Jason and Sabrina meet in Manhattan, the two start dating, and a short five months later they become engaged. Jason comes from a blue-collar family in Brooklyn, but became a successful businessman working on Wall Street. Jason’s mother, Mrs. Taylor, is a postal worker and is deemed as lower class, whereas Sabrina’s parents both come from wealthy families and lead an upper class lifestyle. When the two families’ get together for the first time at Sabrina’s family’s estate on Martha’s Vineyard, their class division becomes quite apparent and conflict quickly ensues.

In the movie, The Breakfast Club, five high school students spend their Saturday detention together. The popular girl Claire Standish, the athlete Andrew Clark, the nerd Brian Johnson, the outcast Allison Reynolds, and the rebellious delinquent John Bender must put aside their differences to survive their detention with their assistant principal, Mr. Vernon. While in detention, they are told to write about “who they really are” in one thousand words. Throughout the day, they reveal their struggles involving their cliques and their home lives. As the movie progresses, the audience finds out the reason each teen is in detention which brings up a discussion about who they really are.

The main character, Bud Fox is anxious to work for him. Gekko sees potential in Fox, and becomes his mentor, guiding him towards success and wealth. However, their friendship and partnership ends when Gekko plans to destroy Fox’s father’s company. But despite the fact that Gekko, driven by greed, betrays his friend, his portrayal as villain is inadequate. Gekko is a successful, intelligent, and charismatic millionaire.
