In this article “FDR’s Body Politics” by Davis W. Houck and Amos Kiewe discusses about how a crippled man become the president in the context of the culture that elects. It is about Franklin Roosevelt understood that a politician is not able to control his own body would be perceived as unable to control the body politic. While giving his speeches, he was physical bearing with it when delivering them. He tried to project robust health for himself while imputing disability, weakness, and even disease onto his political opponents and their policies.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States of America, he had served 4 terms which is more than any other president; the most the others served were 2. Franklin was inaugurated for his 1st term March 4th, 1933 and served in office until his death on April 12th, 1945. He was inaugurated at the height of the Great Depression which had started during the end of 1929 and lasted through 1939. The Great Depression had occurred when the stock market crashed, which resulted in a decrease of consumer spending and that meant less production were meant to be made; many people lost their jobs due to it. To help the economy recover from such a large impact, Franklin D. Roosevelt had begun the New Deal programs.

On January 11th, 1944, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) gave the annual State of the Union Address, (SotU) which was professional and insightful, yet flawed. As most things go, FDR’s SotU Address was presented with faulty arguments; however convincing the arguments may have been. These are called fallacies. In a fallacy, you try to persuade a person to do something by giving an argument of an ethical, emotional, and/or logical nature with false evidence.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s public image has been nothing short of superb. He was the charismatic man who overcame polio and brought back America from the Great Depression and led them to victory in World War II. But, in actuality, Roosevelt was not as great as the history books make him seem. Where he succeeded in some areas, he failed in others. FDR’s lack of moral principles and abuse of federal power, as well as his inept handling of the Great Depression and failure to retain any foresight of his actions, results in an evaluation of a 3 out of 10 rating.

The aim of the advertisement was to promote citizens to vote for his re-election, during a pleasantly convenient time of economical boom. The background pictures a flourishing industry, which McKinley was lucky enough to have such a victory adorn his former presidency.

Andrew Jackson is shown in all three cartoons. The first cartoon’s significance is showing Andrew Jackson as “King Andrew”. The main importance of this is to show he had power and could veto bills. There are no dates or certains numbers in this cartoon. The word veto standed out to me and the declaration of independence on the floor in this cartoon the most.

Theodore Roosevelt uses logos throughout his speech. He uses it to show that he knows what he is doing and using his intelligence to convey that he is the right person to lead the United States. When he says, “Upon the success of our experiment much depends, not only as regards our own welfare, but as regards the welfare of mankind,” it makes us think and feel that he knows what he is talking about, reassuring why he will be a good president. His logos is also shown when he talks about the Republic of the days with Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Bringing this into the speech shows that he knows his history on the US and knows that they did great things for the country, showing that he will also do great things.

In fact, Higgs argued that the New Deal may have actually hindered the recovery from the depression and that Roosevelt’s programs were only used to buy votes. Unlike many historians, Higgs thought that Roosevelt’s presidency negatively impacted the Americans.
