Some people may think that overcoming the fear of spiders is the most challenging thing that someone can do. Fearing spiders is one of the mental challenges that anyone can overcome, just like Odysseus. Many people that fear spiders more than others tend to believe that they cannot get rid of the fear. No matter how brave Odysseus looked or acted in the story, he must have had a hint of fear in each challenge. The fear of spiders and the challenges in The Odyssey has some similar connections with each other. One of the connections is that most times when faced with something new, there will be a bit of fear involved. An example would be a child seeing a spider for the first time. At first glance, the spider would look scary because of a few …show more content…
The section where the fear can go away almost instantly may not apply to everyone. Some people out there are different, even if they did try to overcome their fear. They might still be afraid even after trying to own or touch a spider. It is the same thing with fighting a Cyclops. Unlike Odysseus, if people were to fight a Cyclops and win, they might still be skeptical because they were fighting a bloodthirsty monster and were lucky to get out alive Another argument for the fear of spiders not being valid is the sacrifices both parties would use in order to complete the challenge. The battle with the Cyclops used men as sacrificed, and lives are sacred. With the spiders, however, only small parts of skin would be in danger of getting bit. The sacrifices used are far apart from each other, that is why some people will think the fear of spiders will be invalid. There are many other reasons on how the fear of spiders can connect to The Odyssey. These few are some of the more important ones. The fear of spiders and The Odyssey both have one theme in common. It is to never be afraid of anything, even if it might hurt. Odysseus and the people that have conquered their fears over spiders have shown this. It does not even have to be a fear of spiders to begin with. Whether it is trying out new food or driving a car for the first time, they can be overcome
Being afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening is called fear. In the short story The Most Dangerous Man by Richard Connell is a short story about fear and battling against two men to see who wins the hunting game. Rainsford has to fight to the end of the game to win if he does not then he will lose. To beat General Zaroff Rainsford needs to step up his game and be smart and not be lazy. As Rainsford is getting close to the game he need to be smart because General Zaroff will catch up and he could defeat Rainsford.
The Odyssey is a composition of what used to be oral stories. In order to emphasize the dynamics of each scene, specific language was used in order to convey those feelings. As a whole, without these additions in the story some parts that are considered theatrical, fear inducing, and emotional would not have the same effect. In all, Homer uses figurative language throughout the Odyssey to bring attention to the important changes in tone that reflect the different situations the characters are in.
For example, when you have Arachnophobia, you may end up burning the house down if there is a spider. Or if you have just been through a traumatic war and you are terrified you may be mean to people unintentionally. The text says, “We would chase them out of the dining hall and beat them up. One afternoon, after we had chases off the nurses and staff members, we placed a bucket over the cooks head and pushed him around the kitchen until he burned his hand…” (Beah 138) I can relate to this because I am terrified of needles , since when I was little I had blood dialysis a lot
It 's the fear of not knowing when an attack may happen or where it may happen, that is the fear of the unknown. This type of fear is similar to the type demonstrated in the crucible, In The Crucible the characters may be accused of witchcraft anywhere at any time. To rid of this fear people need to feel secure and we need to educate them. A good way to educate people on these issues is
Challenges of Fear Fear is a challenge that everyone has to deal with at least once in their lifetime. Everyone has a fear of something, whether it's the fear of spiders, the fear of darkness, or even the fear of school. Fear is also shown in Kindred, which is a book about Dana; a young, black woman, who time-travels back to the 1800s. This is a period where people of color were not treated well, and Dana had to suffer through it.
Fear is common in everyone and can be classified as a disease, but we must understand what fear is and how it is
Mead assumes that a general human tendency is to fear those who have the ability to overcome us. However,
Odysseus's fear is of reason Considering Odysseus experiences with the Cyclopes, Laestrygonians, Lotus Eaters and Circe. Odysseus decides he must approach them and now has to devise a plan on how to approach them. Keep in mind odysseus is naked and beaten from fighting the sea and being stranded.
In human and animals, fear has been something that is seen as natural and has been normalized ever since the first creature to exist. There are several reasons on why fear is even created in the first place. For example people may fear disapproval, embarrassment, failure, social rejection, and or being alone. The amount of different types of fears is endless.
Odysseus was haunted by all the things that happened to him during his journey. For example Odysseus had horrible memories of Poseidon torturing him while we was on his journey at the ocean, he was really stressed. Sometimes when soldiers come back from war they have post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health disorder that can be triggered by seeing terrifying events; such as war or in Odysseus’ case, monsters, and being away from his family for an extended period of time. Odysseus being haunted by all these things could symbolize PTSD, which is found in most
These experiences happen to be similar or related to the characters in the two stories. Just like how Will was scared of failure in the movie, I have been scared of failure in my life. An example that is recurring in my life that I’m trying to overcome is being scared of failure in sports. In any sport, when I play, most of the time I play just to not make mistakes instead of just trying to play my best. When I do this, it shows that I am scared of failure and that it is a big part of my life.
From the onset of the book, death is a recurring event, persistent throughout the entire poem. In many ways, the Odyssey is the story of the death of all of Odysseus’ friends and fellow fighters during their return home from conquering Troy. These deaths are particularly heartbreaking to Odysseus because, normally, one would expect that all dying would conclude with the end of the war against Troy. In this case, however, the anticipation of his return to his family at home became a series of tragedies. This sequence of events changes his view and molds Odysseus’ character in regard to his surviving friends and family.
No one can avoid death; it’s icy grasp can claim anyone at any moment. Mortality creates a dismal tone due to the grief it causes and it instills a fear of death in the characters of The Long Walk and The Odyssey. This inevitability is the role death and loss play on the journeys in both novels. As Odysseus sails on his expedition home with his crew, they come across many punishing obstacles, however the most life threatening beast they escape from is Skylla. Odysseus describes how “Every man was pale with fear... at the same moment Skylla grabbed six of [his] men...
How does fear affect how people act? What is fear? First off fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something is dangerous. Fear is also a powerful emotion that can affect people in many different ways including some negative ways like making people lose their sense of mind. In Lord of The Flies fear caused the boys to become scared of the unknown and changed the way they thought.
The first example of Odysseus’s courage was this;“His one chance to abandon the raft and swim to shore… [through the] waves of waves, a terror of the sea”(Hamilton 302). He swims to shore through the scary waves when he could have clung to his boat. Then once he swam to shore Odysseus talked to pretty girls while he was naked(304). Talking to girls is scary.
