Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a syndrome diagnosed primarily at birth, has treatments and is easily prevented. There are varying definitions of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome from many medical sites. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) as, “A highly variable group of birth defects including, mental retardation deficient growth, and malformation of the skull and and face that tend to occur in the offspring of women who consume large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy.” The Mayo Clinic’s definition is, “Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition in a child that results from alcohol exposure during the mother’s pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome causes brain damage and growth problems. The problems caused by fetal alcohol …show more content…
Some children have symptoms that are quite severe while others are rather mild. Signs and symptoms of FAS can include any combination of physical defects, cognitive disabilities and challenges coping with daily living. The Mayo Clinic website has very helpful descriptions of the symptoms of FAS. Some symptoms are physical while others include brain and central nervous system problems. Social and behavioral issues can be a problem as children grow and learn. FAS cannot be diagnosed before birth. Doctors watch the development of the child and possible symptoms of FAS in order to diagnose. There has to be evidence of the biological mother 's alcoholic drinking during pregnancy before testing. In order to have a complete diagnosis of this syndrome, a detailed combination of assessments need to be done. A neurologist or developmental pediatrician needs to have proof of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, measurements of physical features, a record of growth and development and knowledge of the child 's brain size and growth over time. it is also necessary to know the child 's cognitive learning and language development. Assessing health issues and watching social and behavioral problems help to complete the required data to diagnose …show more content…
The brain and central nervous system problems, with a child on the spectrum, will include issues such as: poor coordination, balance, memory, attention, processing speed, reasoning, intellect, judgment, mood regulation, and difficulties with hyperactivity. Even though this list of challenges is long, it is important to know that there are just as many social and behavioral problems as well. Children with FAS tend to have difficulty in school. Their ability to stay on task and set goals, such as research papers present a large challenge to children with FAS. They also have poor social skills, causing trouble getting along with others. Adapting to change and switching from one task to another are other signs of FAS. Often students with FAS have problems with behavior and are impulsive. This makes it difficult to stay out of trouble in school. bAll of these social and behavioral signs are used to determine a diagnosis for FAS. Early diagnosis may reduce some long term problems with symptoms as long as there is strong intervention. There is no cure, but early intervention services will improve the odds of lessening the development of secondary disabilities. Some of the interventions a child may receive can include include special education teachers, speech therapists. physical therapists, occupational therapists and psychologists. Various medications are also an option to help certain symptoms; especially focus issues and mood
Feminism isn't about making women strong. Women are already strong. It's about changing the way the world perceives that strength." —G.D. Anderson Feminism has been an issue in our society for a very long period of time and has been shown in movies, the media and novels. The novel “Lullabies for Little Criminals” by Heather O’Neil demonstrates an extreme case of feminism as the protagonist is shown to be manipulated by men as a way to survive in the current society.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition caused by excessive alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy. Various birth defects may be present, including central nervous system dysfunctions and malformations of the skull and face. Fetal alcohol syndrome was first described in France in the late 1960’s, and the United States described it a few years later (Christensen, p1). The condition was extremely difficult to recognize because not every mother who drank excessively bore a child with any abnormalities or symptoms (Christensen, p1).
Fetal Alcohol Court Case Essay Normally babies would be born healthy from mothers that took care of themselves as best as they could while pregnant. The mothers usually don't drink alcohol because it's not safe for the baby and could cause health problems for them in the future. But, in this case that didn't happen. Jessica Nordeen got pregnant and purposefully still drank alcohol during her pregnancy after not only being told not to drink by the father of the baby but by the doctor that she went to throughout her pregnancy. Jessica Nordeen and Justin Garcia, were seniors in high school at the time and they partied a lot and drank all the time together, then Jessica got pregnant.
Occupational therapy can help a person with Asperger’s thrive physically, emotionally, and socially. As previously stated, if these symptoms were to be left alone, these children and adults would be subjected to bullying, ridiculed, and social isolation due to them being naïve and having concrete views of the world resulting in being vulnerable. Through occupational therapy intervention, this cycle can be interrupted by helping the patient adjust their sensory system. This means, “gaining the physical abilities needed to succeed, acquire valuable social, prevocational, and play skills, and improve their overall ability to function.” Through this intervention, one can not only learn to succeed in the classroom but when the time comes, uphold employment.
• Mild learning disabilities. • Impulsive behaviors that are difficult to control. • Tantrums. • Overactivity. DIAGNOSIS Sotos syndrome may be diagnosed soon after birth or later in childhood if developmental delays occur.
Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term used to characterise the effects from prenatal alcohol exposure. It is believed to be the primary origin of non-genetic mental retardation alongside further neurodevelopment deficits. They vary from mild to severe but the effects of FASD cause permanent birth defects to which there is no known cure. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Partial Foetal Alcohol Syndrome(PFAS), Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder(ARND), and also Foetal Alcohol Effects(FAE), as well as others, all fall within FASD (Acton PHD, 2013). Defects can occur in a baby due to its mother consuming alcohol during her pregnancy.
Consumptions of large amount of alcohol during pregnancy can lead to a Fetal alcohol syndrome or (FAS). Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most common known non-genetic (non-inherited) cause of mental retardation in the United States which is estimated three out of a thousand babies. Defects can be small heads and brain, facial abnormalities, and defects of other organs. When mother drinks alcohol while pregnant the alcohol goes through the fetus body which can cause the alcohol to remain in the baby’s body even longer. When mother is an alcoholic or drinks alcohol three to four times a day the baby that she is carrying can also be addicted to alcohol.
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition where an unborn child is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. The effect of exposure of alcohol during pregnancy causes brain damage and growth problems. Fetal alcohol syndrome has physical symptoms which include the following wide set eyes, thin upper lip, flattened face with a short nose, deformities of joints, limbs and fingers, slow physical growth, vision problems, hearing problems, small head circumference, heart defects, and issues with kidneys and bones Fetal alcohol exposure has a dramatic effect on the central nervous system.
Long-term alcohol abuse on the brain can affect the ability to control states of mind, sleeping habits, and your memory. Liver disease caused by the toxicity of alcohol will also affect the brain by allowing toxic amounts of substances to enter the brain causing fatal disorders. Consuming alcohol while pregnant will increase the chances of a fetus being born with learning disabilities or problems interacting with other

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a severe and devastating condition that develops in a child due to exposure to alcohol while in the womb. Symptoms of the syndrome range from physical deformities to mental disabilities. Several birth defects caused by fetal alcohol syndrome are seen in the protagonist of The Rocking Horse Winner, Paul. Paul suffers from slight facial deformities, schizophrenia, and behavioral problems. Altogether his disabilities provide evidence that his mother consumed alcohol while pregnant with him.
Reflection Paper #2 The key term I chose to focus on for this paper is fetal alcohol syndrome which falls under the category of childhood/adolescent disorders. I chose this key term and topic because my cousin struggled with fetal alcohol syndrome and also my future brothers-in-law struggle with the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome to this day. My cousin was born with several severe medical issues as his mother was a drug addict and alcoholic. My parents adopted him for the first 5 years of his life so he is like a younger brother to me.
Introduction A reality, a lesson that can be used when we have this syndrome.the concrete resolution that will guide us at the same time giving a knowledge to those who are affected on this. The point of view is emphasizing the safetiness of a child that is very important and needed for his/her development. Summary: Chapter 1: The major types of alcoholic families.
Alcohol has many bad effects on the baby. If a mother consumes a lot of alcohol during their pregnancy it can cause the baby to have fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Babies who suffer from FAS have a lot of disabilities. “FAS may lead to limb and facial malformations, congenital heart disease, failure to thrive, anomalies of the external genitalia, growth retardation, mental retardation, and learning disabilities”. (Robin Harwood, Scott A.Miller, Ross Vasta, 2008, P.123).
