In the beginning, Kelley informs us how over “two million children under the age of sixteen are earning their bread.” this ftype igautive language, also know as a metaphor, gives emphasis on how in order for them to eat, they need to endure harsh conditions to earn money to survive. Without this “bread”these young children will suffer and their lives will go to ruins. No money to buy food will eventually lead to their deaths. This personification revealed how there no longer is a limitation to the hours that women and children have. Instead, they are expected to work all night long. Florence Kelley (1859-1932), daughter of William and Caroline Kelley, was a successful women. She lived during the time of the Orphan Train Movement which lasted from 1854 to 1929. The Orphan Train Movement relocated homeless and abandoned children living on the streets of New York City to new homes in the United States. Some children were put into homes where they prospered but unfortunately some children were put into homes where they were treated like slaves and abused. Although Florence was alive at the time the orphan train ran there is no know information about how she actually responded to the movement.
Childs’ important “opportunity” comes in being able to work in a non-racialized environment, but more importantly, it provided working class women with a higher wage in order to free them from Middle class servitude as domestic servants in the patriarchal household. In this manner, the white female workers of WWII factories were able to escape low paying jobs, but at the same time, they were able to avoid the pitfalls of domestic servitude in the domestic sphere of middle class
Kelly also wrote several books. It is easy to conclude that Florence Kelley was ahead of her time in her ideas and approach to social reform. She laid the groundwork for many social programs that were not implanted till after her death. Florence Kelley was a famous Progressive-Era social reformer known for her protective legislation on working women and children. From a young age, she committed herself to social reform like at Hull House in Chicago and also as the first general secretary of the National Consumers League. She later helped start National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) who policy was “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” The famous case of Muller V. Oregon showed Florence’s conquest to establish labor laws against working long hours and bad working conditions. This case paved a way into new ideas and eventually created the labor unions we have today Florence’s father, Congressman William Kelley, was a social activist who fought for the poor.
