Everyone has a birthday, that’s the way it is. Some might not know when theirs is, but they have one. Every year on the same day, you turn a new age, but don’t you still feel like you’re still that previous age? That is how Rachel feels in the short story “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros. Cisneros uses figurative language, repetition and imagery to characterize Rachel as a young child who wishes to grow up and be stronger.

For example ¨Ï just stared at the doorknob which was so polished I could see my reflection in its gleaming surface. Him describing how clean and shiny the doorknob showed that he had not experienced cleanliness since moving to North Korea. This quote allowed readers to fully understand the low point of the character's life. Ishiwawa uses sensory imagery to describe what he wants but ultimately cannot have. ¨The sweet smell of candy permeated the air¨.

One example to show how he uses his words is when he wrote “…: the Deeps. There’s all the coldness and darkness and deepness in a word like that.” (5) That sentence is very clear about the tone being cold. This is the first story of the book so it should have a lot of impact to show how the rest of the book will be and it helped the reader understand how the theme for the book will revolve around loneliness or isolation.

Sandra Cisneros uses figurative language to convey her perspective about war like imagery, similes and metaphors. One of the figurative languages that Cisneros uses is imagery. The text " Eyes of Zapata” Is about Ines who is the wife of Emiliano Zapata.

Sonya Hartnett, the author of “The Silver Donkey” represents the key character, Lieutenant Shepard, in a number of ways. First, she uses figurative language to create a sense of mystery and wonder around him. For example, she describes him as a "ghost" and as “dead" (Chapter 1, The Soldier in the Trees). This language creates a sense of unease and suspense, and it makes the reader want to learn more about him. Second, Hartnett uses dialogue to reveal Shepard's character.

In the story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier there are several figurative language sentences and symbols that have meaning to the overall theme of the story. "Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are. She uses an accordion to describe this because an accordion is a fun and upbeat instrument and a "broken accordion" is the complete opposite.

In the past, authors have used different kinds of diction and imagery in order to express their thoughts and experiences on the thought of growing up. In the vignette “The Monkey Garden” from The House On Mango Street Esperanza deals with the pain of her friend growing up before she does. Her lack of maturity in social situations causes her confusion and pain. At the beginning of the vignette Sandra Cisneros uses positive diction and peaceful, playful imagery in order to show the beauty and innocence of childhood. Cisneros then shifts the tone and uses negative diction and Sorrowful imagery in order to express that growing up can be a painful, revealing process.

In the novel “A Clockwork Orange”, key words and phrases are repeatedly used throughout the book. The book’s passage itself resembles that of a sonata, where the first and 3rd part of the book are upbeat, while the 2nd part goes in a more slow, fluent style. These patterns in the book represent the important themes of the book, including the power of language, ego and superego, and the free will of human beings. The opening phrase of each part of the book, “What’s it going to be then, eh?”

One example of this was when the author used personification to describe the desert towards the end of the piece. Personification is when the author uses human characteristics to describe non-human objects. He described the desert as a beautiful brown color, much like that of a person's skin color. Another example of a rhetorical device that I noticed was polysyndeton, which I found quite noticeable throughout the reading because the author used it multiple times. Polysyndeton is when the author uses a repetitive amount of a certain conjunction to emphasize a certain point.

Descriptive language uses images that appeal to the reader’s senses, helping the reader to imagine how a subject looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels. Some of the examples of descriptive language include tone, irony, mood, imagery, alliteration, onomatopoeia, allusion and satire. Without the use of descriptive language, the world of literature would be a monotonous place. Descriptive language does not really have to be wordy but it should be placed at all the right places to give purpose to the image it is trying to create in the mind of the readers.
