Figurative Language In The Outsiders

The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E. Hinton and takes place in Oklahoma during the 1960s. One theme in this novel that stands out most to me is loyalty. The story is told by Ponyboy Curtis, and illustrates his conflict with right and wrong in his world, where he feels like an outsider. Loyalty to Ponyboy means giving and receiving honor, integrity, trust, support, family, pride, honesty and faithful to those closest to him.

During the 1830s, the Great Depression took over America’s brightness and joy, shattering the American spirit. Citizens searched for a light to help people get their lives back together. During this searching, they found Seabiscuit to bring them hope. Seabiscuit is a racing horse that received the right trainer and rider to make him a legend. Seabiscuit’s story is beautifully portrayed in Laura Hillenbrand’s book, Seabiscuit.

In the novel The Outsiders published in 1967, and in the movie, 1983, both by S. E. Hinton, they elaborate on many themes. For example, one is that violence doesn't solve anything, or things are hard all over. In the movie of The Outsiders it doesn’t express the same themes though. In both of these versions of The Outsiders though it has very similar storylines to compare the two of these versions and so the audience won’t notice. To compare and contrast these things though, must work with the scenes to work with emotions.

"The Outsiders" is a seminal coming-of-age novel authored by S.E. Hinton and originally published in 1967. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis, a member of a gang called the Greasers, who perpetually finds himself at odds with the affluent and privileged Socs. The central premise of the novel involves the significance of learning from mistakes and overcoming challenges. Hinton employs the literary technique of characterisation to effectively communicate this message to the reader. Ponyboy Curtis is a young and impressionable protagonist who confronts various challenges throughout the narrative.

If society takes the time to analyze these actions, individuals can figure out the feelings of one another in a certain moment. “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson delineates the thoughts and feelings of a teenage girl, Melinda, as she navigates the highs and lows of high school, while carrying the weight of a past traumatic event. In the passage from the book, “Speak”, author Laurie Halse Anderson uses different types of figurative language such as similes and metaphors, as well as repetition to reveal Melinda’s negative thoughts on her past and current feelings about high school.

The use of figurative language in this book, helps portray each character's personality. Roy uses a lot of similes, and the older protagonists, Curly and Officer Delinko, use more metaphors, which is a good thing, because every piece of figurative language makes the book more humorable. For example, in chapter nine on page 105 Roy says, “ No offense, but you are as nutty as a fruitcake”, and also in chapter one on page 3 Officer Delinko says, “The hole was a black hole”. Also, the author, Carl Hiaasan writes this story going back and forth from each protagonist’s journey, so then in the end we all see how much they’ve, and/or matured

In the Freedom Writers Diary, the authors focus on the topic of the reality of what they have to deal with in their everyday world. Their teacher Mrs. Gruwell inspired them throughout their high school years by teaching them that it is possible for each and every one of them to change. They write with an uplifting and hopeful outlook on the world even if it not realistic in their present circumstances. In their writing, they establish an effective use of pathos by writing about their own lives and how they connect to others and us by using the selection of detail, metaphors, and allusions. Through these devices, we come to the idea that even though teenager’s in today’s world are faced with many hardships, they do not have to succumb to them.

The Outsiders: Compare and Contrast In the novel “The Outsiders,” by S.E Hinton and the movie by Francis Ford Coppola have numerous similarities and differences. Our thoughts on these particular aspects are very diverse as the universe is. Many things have been either left out or diminished from the movie, which makes it less interesting as the suspense lessens as you have finished reading the book. Although this might be the case, there were also many similarities between the two sources.

In The Road, Cormac McCarthy uses figurative language, to demonstrate the difference in the people’s decisions and values when compared to the real world. The survivors of the apocalypse, including the father all had to undergo a series of radical changes in order to adapt and survive in the new world. When the father enters the house, where the people are kept for food, not only does he see naked people both male and female but also a man with his leg cut off. McCarthy writes, “On the mattress lay a man with his legs gone to the hip and stumps of them blackened and burnt” (McCarthy 110).

One example of figurative language in Laurie Hale Anderson’s book “Speak” is when Melinda decides to rid her garden of all weeds, and does some spring cleaning after it finally stops raining during May. Around the same time, Melinda is realizing that she wants to make some new changes in her life and in this figurative language example, Melinda’s life is her garden. She decides first to rake the leaves “suffocating the bushes” ; Melinda is ridding the demons from herself on the first layer of her skin. She says that she has to “fight the bushes (her problems)” and the bushes don’t like getting cleaned out but it is something one has to do if one makes

"Outsiders" Compare and Contrast Essay The “ Outsiders” movie and novel are awkward and interesting. Upon watching both they appeared to be somewhat similar. However, after finishing the movie and having time to reflect they have distinct differences.

The Outsiders is a story that is about two types of people or should I say social classes that had their own nicknames, the upper class people had a nickname of the “Socs” and the lower to middle class people were called the “Greasers” and it was all about their lives and the rivalry between the two of them. The Outsiders at first was seen as a kind of bad story and rebellious but then later on was recognized as one of the most talked about novels around the time it came out. ( Famous Authors). The story jump started Hinton her career and her way to the top as a novelist, The Outsiders sold roughly around 4 million copies or more and gave her a lot of publicity as well as gaining fame in the process.

A simile is a comparison that describes two different things using ¨like¨ or ¨as.¨ The first way Connell demonstrates using a simile is in the example, ¨The sea was as flat as a plate glass window.¨ He describes the sea to a smooth glass window. During this part of the story, there was no breeze in the air and the ocean waves were still and calm, which caused Rainsford to feel stressed about the strange things that were happening around the island. Another way Connell used a simile was ¨... his thick eyebrows were pointed and military mustache was as black as the night from which Rainsford had come.¨

The novel “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton depicts the theme of violence predominantly. This novel portrays how violence leaves physical and emotional scars. SE Hilton explores the effect of living in a place where a teenager can't even walk home by himself and where fear is the foremost emotion. Gang violence, shooting, stabbing, ignorance etc are examples of violence illustrated in the novel. I will explore the theme of violence through characters such as Johnny,Dally and Bob and analyse the emotional and physical damage caused by the violence in this novel.
