Figurative Language In The Pie, By Gary Soto

Throughout this excerpt, the use of imagery is vital to the evolution of Chief Bromden. Chief wakes up with the sudden urge to do something. As he walks around, he feels the cold tiles against his feet, and he realizes how many times he had walked on the tiles before, but had never felt it at all. “I walked down the windows to one where the shade popped softly in and out with the breeze, and I pressed my head against the mesh.” In this paragraph the imagery of the smells and Chief presses his head against the mesh, appeals to the senses of smell and touch.

“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power.” -Patrick Rothfuss. Everyone in uses figurative language in someway, you could be writing a paper, yelling at your sister, or maybe just talking to yourself. But you use it in someway, shape, or form.

Life can really suck sometimes. It can give us the illusion that everything is going to go smoothly as planned, but then it surprises us with tragedy or rough, unexpected circumstances. It is during these times that we just don’t know what to do and feel hopeless. But hope is always there. Sometimes it’s obvious, and sometimes it seems impossible to find, but there is always hope for any situation or circumstance.

A significant piece of figurative language that the author included in the novel,” In The Time of Butterflies “ is, “I can see my hand in an endless slow-motion rise a mind all its own and come down on the astonished, made up the face(Alvarez 100).” This example of personification tells us about in the book when Minerva slapped Trujillo. Although hands don't usually have a mind of their own, this connects to the type of character that Minerva is. This shows how brave and very mischievous she is. I encounter a woman named Nora when I was introduce to a play called “A Doll’s House,” in my AP Literature class. As I read the play, I feel myself mentally and emotionally connecting to Nora. Suddenly, I find myself having a conversation with this woman. I start questioning the title’s meaning and my peer’s frame of reference of Nora. All my actions are justified based upon “Conversation Metaphor”, by Kenneth Burke.

The author uses figurative language to strengthen the poem by adding more detail. He explains what things feel like,sound like,look like, and even taste like. Without figurative language the writing would be boring and short.the imagery describes how the setting looked and gave the reader more knowledge. “Burnham immediately went to Margaret’s father to break the engagement, on the grounds the courtship could not continue in the shadow of scandal.” (Larson21) The parallel structure in the following sentence presents Burnham as an honorable and charming man. Larson’s word choice of “immediately” illustrate how quickly Burnham acts when he notice his brother’s mistakes might become a source of shame or ridicule for his future wife.

In the book anthem by Ayn Rand starts off by saying that “Its is a sin to write this.” Why does he start the character by saying these words? in the book the main character is named equality 7-2521 and in his society they have taught him differently than ours. in mentioned in pg 19 “we are one in all and all in one there are no men but only the great we , one, indivisible forever.” The people in equalities society were taught by using the word “we” not

Everybody has a past, but it’s more important to focus on the present and the future. In the story, “The Paring Knife”, Michael Oppenheimer uses the elements of symbolism and figurative language to portray the theme of sometime its best that what is in the past stay in the past. Oppenheimer begins the story by repeating the term “the woman I love” over and over through the narrator; Oppenheimer shows that the narrator is deeply in love with his woman (Oppenheimer 1). By using figurative language, Oppenheimer emphasizes the couple’s bond through their action. The couple has a “large dinner” with wine then go to bed (Oppenheimer 1).

One example of figurative language in Laurie Hale Anderson’s book “Speak” is when Melinda decides to rid her garden of all weeds, and does some spring cleaning after it finally stops raining during May. Around the same time, Melinda is realizing that she wants to make some new changes in her life and in this figurative language example, Melinda’s life is her garden. She decides first to rake the leaves “suffocating the bushes” ; Melinda is ridding the demons from herself on the first layer of her skin. She says that she has to “fight the bushes (her problems)” and the bushes don’t like getting cleaned out but it is something one has to do if one makes

This quote begins the plot by creating the exposition. The narrator or speaker does this by explaining the setting of the Younger household, telling the audience which rooms are where and that they have lived in that space for many years. The narrator also gives personification to the objects such as the furniture around the house which makes them feel alive in a way. The time and place is also given which is the period after World War II in Chicago which may explain certain tones and language that the characters may use. Moreover, by telling the audience that many people live in the Younger household, other than themselves, and that they all share rooms or that their son sleeps in the living room, the audience can infer that they are not very

1. The line “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food” is a hyperbole and zeugma. The word that creates the zeugma is the word lived, as the narrator uses the word lived to mean different things in the same context. The narrator actually lived off of paychecks and government food, but did not literally live off of hope and fear like the line suggests. The line is also a hyperbole because the author did not literally live off of the hope and fear, as you cannot sustain yourself with emotions.

Sometimes, it’s possible to read between the lines without knowing exactly what is being stated in those lines. Take Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s poem “Yuba City School,” for instance. In this poem, Neeraj, a young boy, and his mother have recently immigrated to California from Punjab, India. At his new school, Neeraj’s teacher repeatedly insults and shames him for not understanding English, and it takes its toll. Through the use of figurative language, Divakurani conveys that one does not need to understand what a person is saying word for word in order to comprehend and be affected by what that person’s true message is.

“The Scarlet Ibis” “It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that ibis lit in the bleeding tree” (Hurst 350). James Hurts creates a depressing tone, or attitude, by using figurative language, symbolism, and imagery. This sad story is about a child who is born with a deficiency and expected to die however, lives. His brother soon realizes that Doodle is not like the other kids so he pushes him to be like the others, which actually hurts him more. Figurative Language helps show the gloomy tone throughout the story from the first paragraph onwards.
