In “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, the director, John Hughes, uses various angles, close up shots, and mise-en-scene, to argue that people strive for independence, but are always reliant on other people. Ferris Bueller is a rebellious high school senior but still relies on manipulating people to ensure he does not get caught. Ferris, unlike Cameron, has unconditional love from his parents, yet still chooses to defy his parents rules. Cameron on the other hand lives in fear of his parents. They have an authoritarian and cold relationship with him. Cameron admires Ferris and cherishes their friendship because Ferris is everything Cameron is not. But, each film technique shows how there is always something in the way of being a crazy, rebellious teen. The movie starts off with Ferris wanting to do all these impulsive, rebellious actions. Ferris does not think about the consequences of his actions. He does not fear punishment because he simply does not believe that someone as manipulative and wise as him could possibly get caught. Later in the movie, Ferris comes to his senses that one day he will have to graduate from high school and that he wants to get married and start a new life. The movie ends with Cameron finally standing up to his parents and admitting to something he did, although it was against his will. He usually hides behind Ferris, but this time he decided to take all of the blame. Although it appears that Ferris and Cameron are trying to alienate themselves from their families, it is seemingly true that it is the other way around. Mr. Bueller and Mr. Frye focus their lives on materialistic things. Mr. Bueller spends all of his time at work, trying to make as much money as possible. In The Road, Papa and the boy continue to move forward and “carry the fire”, staying morally true to themselves, even despite the things they had seen. The boy’s mother shot herself, he has seen cannibalism, slavery, and people reduced to monsters and broken shells of humanity, but he is still fighting and trying to be one of the good guys. He still wants to help the little boy when he meets him, still wants to help Ely when he meets them (McCarty, 162); The Boy still has a desire to help people who are suffering. He is starving, but he wants to give away his food so that the people who are good in this world won’t die.

In the movie “Friday” it displays a typical day in the ghetto and what obstacles two young black men had to go through just to get through one day. Ice Cube a famous American rapper from LA’s popular 90’s hip hop group NWA wrote this historic black comedic/drama film and along plays the main character Craig Jones. Craig plays the neighborhood hero after a chaotic day where he deals with bullies, his love life, annoying neighbors, and scary drug dealers. The film is based in south central LA in the mid 90’s where Craig and his best friend Smokey who is played by comedian/actor Chris Tucker find themselves in trouble after thinking it would be a typical Friday in the ghetto. Craig a young black man in his early twenties lives at home with his parents is determined to leave the ghetto but there 's just some things holding him back.

Released September 29, 1950, Sunset Boulevard is a film noir of a forgotten silent film star, Norma Desmond, that dreams of a comeback and an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis, working together. Ultimately an uncomfortable relationship evolves between Norma and Joe that Joe does not want a part of. Sunset Boulevard starts off with an establishing shot from a high angle shot with a narrative leading to a crime scene shot in long shot (a dead body is found floating in a pool). The narrative throughout the film established a formalist film. Cinematography John F. Seitz used lighting and camera angles in such a way to create a loneliness and hopefulness atmosphere.

Throughout the course of one’s life, there is a constant search for some form of happiness. We may not always realize we are on the quest for it, but it’s part of human nature. In “Silver Linings Playbook” we see this happen throughout with Pat and Tiffany, who are both searching for happiness. The film is relatable to us all in that many times we go looking for happiness only to come up empty-handed.
O Brother Where Art Thou? is a film that will take you on a perilous journey with Ulysses Everett McGill and his simpleminded cohorts.
