Final Lyrical Analysis Throughout the lyrical analysis assignment, my common theme has been alcohol use in country music. As a country music fan, the close tie between the genre and alcoholic beverages is not a new connection. Typically, country artists sing about either beer or whiskey, and they are seen in a positive light, drinking is viewed as a way to get the party going, or just as a way to wind down after a long hard day of blue-collar work. It is not uncommon to see unhealthy alcohol use in country music, people using alcohol as a way to numb the pain from a recent heartbreak; however, the problematic

In my lyrical analyses, I wanted to find songs in the country music genre that focused on the negative sides of excessive alcohol consumption, without the typical glorification that is commonly seen today.
The glorification of alcohol in music, specifically country music, is dangerous. Although, Alcohol is not an illegal substance, there are many dangers associated with the unhealthy use of alcohol. The reality of unhealthy alcohol consumption can be surprising for some people, due to the perception of alcohol in our society. There are many way unhealthy alcohol consumption can negatively impact a person’s life, this can be seen in both physical and mental health. Alcohol is often used as an unhealthy coping mechanism and people can form dependency issues with this mood-altering substance. According to Howard Abadinsky’s “Drug Use and Abuse” (2018), Illnesses related to alcohol kill approximately eighty-thousand people annually. Although alcohol is not officially part of the Controlled Substances Act, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) would classify it as a schedule two narcotic. One important distinction to make when discussing substance use is the differences between drug addiction, drug abuse, and

These are consequences that are not part of the normal discussion that surrounds alcohol in our society. Alcohol is a dangerous substance when not used correctly. Alcohol causes twice as many deaths as drug use, according to Howard Abadinsky’s “Drug Use and Abuse” (2018). It is beneficial to see unhealthy relationships with alcohol and their consequences displayed in popular parts of media. Especially, in country music where alcohol is constantly seen as a coping mechanism, which could impact listeners and cause them to have misuse alcohol, thinking it is a typical or even healthy thing to do. When analyzing these lyrics and the culture surrounding alcohol, I realized how many country songs are about unhealthy uses of alcohol. These are songs that I had grew up listening to, sometimes some of my favorites. This made me think, would I have been tempted to use alcohol as a coping mechanism in the future? Purely based on the influence of the songs I’ve listened to. The way alcohol is portrayed in society, through media outlets like music and movies, encourages the consumption and many times overconsumption of alcohol. It promotes unhealthy coping mechanisms and can reinforce dangerous
I agree with the author's point of view in the article “The Danger Lurking in Just One Drink”, by Jeannie Ralston. She provides many statistics that surround teenage binge drinking and how it is negative and dangerous to teenagers. In the beginning, the article starts off with a short story about a girl from Massachusetts, named Taylor Meyer, who was too drunk to find her way home and ended up drowning in a swampy area in the woods. “Your brain on alcohol becomes a dumber, more unpredictable version of itself and the consequences can be catastrophic” (Ralston, p.7). If Taylor had not drank that night she would have been able to find her way home safely and unharmed.
Now as with the typical outlook on alcohol in general, historically there were negative consequences associated with it. That doesn’t make it any less important to discuss than anything else. I guess where ever mankind has come together there has been a need for an escape
Today in the United States about 4,358 people under the age of 21 years old die each year from alcohol-related car crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, and other injuries such as falls, burns, and even drowning. More than 190,000 people under the age of 21 visited an emergency room for alcohol related reasons in 2008 alone. Alcohol related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes. That’s a lot of people gone because they wanted to go out and party and not think about the consequences ahead. In this essay I’m gonna give you information to why Underage Drinking is very very bad for you.
(White) Also, “Consequences of college drinking include missed classes and lower grades, injuries, sexual assaults, overdoses, memory blackouts, changes in brain function, lingering cognitive deficits, and death” (White) Finally White says, “When the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) issued its first report on alcohol misuse by college students, research advances have transformed our

The reported issues that accompanied most drinking appeared to be associated with those individuals that were engaging in binge drinking not just ongoing
He points out Christianity’s influence, which was strong in the communities where he grew up. The bible contains a few warnings about the effects of alcoholism, that there isn’t any pride in imbibing or creating a good alcoholic drink, and that it can lead to moral bankruptcy. Sander implies that as he grew, he came to understand that moral bankruptcy was not responsible for his father’s illness. Another cultural influence of alcoholism is through entertainment.
“Sober Song” by Barton Sutter is arranged as a free verse poem with a rhyme scheme pattern within every other line. This poem describes a man saying his goodbyes to the memories he has had with alcohol. The poem’s beat and rhythm reminds the reader of a broken love song to the liquor that had once taken over his life. In lines in 1 through 4, we have a special pattern displayed not only in these lines, but throughout the entire poem.
Courtney Grove Addictions/Assessments/Interventions Spring 2017 All of the personal stories in this book are an attempt to help individuals identify with the authors. Hopefully, after reading each story we, and alcoholics alike may say to themselves "I'm very much like _____. My alcohol use has followed a similar pattern and I have also tried different ways to control my drinking with similar, pained results. Perhaps the steps that _______ followed will work for me also.” This keeps the sneaky pull of alcohol at the forefront of their minds, learning from the experiences of others and remembering their own experiences from the reality standpoint rather than with fond remembrance.
Some reasons for this is that the media likes to glorify alcohol; for example, “borgs” have become a very popular social media trend that includes drinking half a gallon of vodka mixed with flavored water in one sitting. According to Elizabeth Shepard, “75 percent of young teens say that alcohol is easy to require.” This is a huge problem because the three leading causes of death in young adults are car crashes, homicides, and suicides- alcohol being the leading factor in all three (Shepard). Therefore, underage drinking trends contribute to the issue of drunk driving in the United
Alcohol intoxication has been the subject of anxiety from the start of its history to its present. The level of intoxication can range from mild to severe, and alcohol poisoning requires medical attention and can lead to death. Intoxication has been around since beverages were first fermented and distilled, and alcohol played important roles in cultures. Intoxication on the other hand, has been frowned upon and there have been many anxieties associated with it throughout history. This is seen in Greece, Rome, American, and Native cultures, where intoxication was illegal, thought to be the reason for violence and promiscuity, and was considered a health risk.
Andrew Joelson Ms. Kigar Honors English 10 March 24 2023 If you were to become addicted to something so detrimental to your life and you knew that before trying the first taste, would you do it? Alcohol is a tale as old as time, it was drunk before water was clean enough to consume, so how bad could it be if it's been around for so long? Alcohol has been around for about 10,000 years. It was originally used primarily for medicinal purposes but now that is not the case.
In the song, “Whiskey Lullaby,” written by Jon Randall and Bill Anderson and sung by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss, the message being sent is that love so strong can be ruined with just one mistake that could lead to worst outcomes. Told in second point-of-view, the author supports this theme by describing the setting of a gloomy country home establishing the major conflict of love and death and incorporating the use of irony, tone shifts, imagery, and word choices. Paisley’s purpose is to imply that love can become something putrid and could end up hurting loved ones very deeply. This song creates a mood of sadness and mournfulness for an audience that have experience this type of situation being described in the song. Throughout the whole song the singer used different tones when singing different parts of the song.
ALCOHOLISM How many times have you heard about the consequences of alcoholism? Have you taken them into account? Alcoholism is one of the major problems in society. People don’t take it so seriously but it actually is a disease. The effects of this disease are really serious.
“Drunken with what” is the question that needs to be addressed when deciding whether overindulging is problematic. Devoting your life to music and spending every hour drunken with the love of music over a lifetime would be a positive example of overindulgence. While, spending a lifetime obsessing over work and chasing the all-mighty dollar could rob you of opportunities of finding the true passions of life.
