Directed by Gus Van Sant and released in 2000, Finding Forrester is a film about race, identity, mentorship, and the power of words. The film follows the unlikely friendship between talented African-American high school student Jamal Wallace and reclusive writer William Forrester. Through their interactions, Jamal not only learns the art of writing, but also the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of adversity.
One of the central themes of “Finding Forrester” is race and identity. A talented basketball player and avid writer, Jamal struggles to find his place in a predominantly white private school. He was often stereotyped or ostracized by his classmates and teachers because of his race, and he was pressured by his family and

Forrester was Jamal's mentor and friend, guiding and supporting him through his high school struggles and finding his voice as a writer. Forrester also benefits from this relationship. Interacting with Jamal allows him to reconnect with the world and find a sense of purpose. This shows how to make meaningful connections beyond oneself.
The power of words is another theme of the film. Forrester has lived a reclusive life for many years, but is still a renowned writer who is deeply invested in the power of language to convey meaning and emotion. In conversation with Jamal and through his own writing, Forrester emphasizes the importance of authenticity and honesty in his writing and the power of words to connect people across time and distance. The film shows that writing is not only a means of self-expression, but also a means of communicating and building relationships with others.
Overcoming obstacles is a prominent theme in “Finding Forrester”. Despite life's challenges, Jamal and Forrester find strength and support in their friendship. After the death of his older brother, Forrester struggles with his own literary legacy, and Jamal struggles with his family's expectations and prejudices. Through their interactions, the two characters find the resilience and courage to overcome these adversities and pursue their
School was a struggle for him because of the language barrier from French to English and because he was behind most students in all the subjects except math. Math was a subject that he understood and did better at than other students. “This time I felt like my brain was working but my ears were not” (Cadet 102). He understood what was written on the board because math is universal across all languages but struggled with the terms that were used because of the English language. Although he struggled through the subjects, he learned quickly that he was equal to the rest of the students even if they were white.
In the movie, Jamal's teacher Mr. Crawford doesn’t like Jamal either. First of all, Jamal is a new student at his school and Mr. Crawford thinks that his writings are too good. Mr. Crawford’s dream of being a published author got destroyed when he was younger so now, he doesn’t

The reactions from the people he knows to his story are mostly negative. They believe that a black boy should not become a writer. This heavily portrays the implications of oppression towards the black community. Instead of attempting to deviate from the stereotypes held by the white community, the black community instead succumbed to these stereotypes falling into the unequal roles designated for them by
In the movie Finding Forrester (2000) Jamal is faced with an identity issue. Jamal being an inner-city kid with a reputation to uphold is clearly leading a double life. His neighborhood life is one of a streetwise, trash-talking thug who doesn 't want any of his “boys” to know the real Jamal. On the other hand the true Jamal is a bright, talented and goal oriented young man that is scared to show his true identity. That is until William Forrester challenges him to write with his heart first, then rewrite with his head (Sant, 2000).
For example, in school none of Chris’ teachers carede about him. His family was known to be the poorest in town, and the teachers thought he was less than other students because of his family’s income. He also got into many fights, and the teachers acted like Chris was starting fights, even though he wasn’t the one starting fights. In addition, the schooling system didn’t want him to stay in college. There was frequent riots at the school, and the school blamed Chris for being at one of those riots, even though he was nowhere near the riots.
I enjoyed how the supporting characters helped to shape Jamal and add to his characters depth throughout the film. His brother T, had a big impact on Jamal. He encouraged him to always do his best in both academics and in sports. T supported his brother and made sure to be there for him physically and well as mentally. Claire Spence was the love interest of Jamal’s character and young lady he met at the prep school he was recruited to.

While watching this movie it does not take long to realize that most of the characters are black men. Also the communication style between the characters is very different from an average American that may be watching the movie. Through viewing the culture and communication styles of the characters it is very easy to tell that the director of the film has some experience in this type of life style. A good example of this is when Tre tells the story about hooking up with a girl. He tells a story about sneaking into a girl’s house then the grandma coming in and almost catching him (Singleton, 1991).
Forrest Gump (1994), directed by Robert Zemeckis, portrays the life of a simple-minded, good and honest American, Forrest Gump, who witnesses or sometimes even involves in some of the most important events in the United States and inspires some popular cultures at the time. The story discusses love, destiny, innocence and serendipity. The director employs several elements to convey these themes. The main character encountering different people, in flashback or in the present, not only moves the story forward, also portrays the themes of serendipity and innocence. The innocent perspective of Forrest Gump towards some serious topics, namely, racism, child abuse, drug use, war violence, and politics, also is a distinguished part of the movie.
