Argumentative Essay Conflict is hard to deal with. Although, there are many ways in which humans respond to conflict. Both Anne Frank from “First Read: Anne Frank” and Louise Ogawa from “First Read: Dear Miss Breed” both prove that staying positive in stressful or conflicting situations can help, even in times of war. Some believe that taking action or rebelling might be the best response, however, people can best respond to conflict by staying positive because it affects their physical and mental health in a helpful way and can affect others around them as well. Positive thinking is one of the best ways to respond to conflict because it can affect a person’s physical health in a constructive way. The Mayo Clinic Staff states that a positive …show more content…
In the short story, “Dear Miss Breed”, a young Japanese girl shares her experience in a concentration camp. To Miss Breed, she writes, “This trip has made me realize the wonderful work of nature. Her delicate work in shaping the stone mountains, the beautiful coloring of the surroundings—it seemed as if I was looking at the picture or a painting of a genius” (Ogawa). Young Louise prefers to focus on the good side of a situation; it can help her cope better with things that have happened around her. Mostly because she is young; older people would most likely focus on the bad side of the situation. In a short passage from Anne Frank’s diary, Anne claims that first, she packed her, “diary, and then curlers, handkerchiefs, schoolbooks, a comb and some old letters. Preoccupied by the thought of going into hiding, I stuck the craziest things in the bag, but I'm not sorry. Memories mean more to me than dresses…” In a rush, Anne packs the items that would be more important to her than necessities. Again, she preferred to pack things that would make her happy and would help her to get through tough times. Lastly, staying positive can not only have physical health effects but mental ones as well. There are many health benefits, such as “Lower rates of depression, lower levels of distress, better psychological well-being, better coping skills during hardships and times of stress…” (Mayo Clinic Staff). Of course, if one stays positive, that person would be able to cope with things like depression and distress. As a person could live with a negative attitude, a positive attitude helps the body function better because it produces hormones like endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. Being able to produce these hormones helps the body have better coping skills and are more likely to act in a constructive

(Willoughby, 2004) The words of Alena Synkova approve the fact that even in the darkest and most fearful moments in life, without even her parents beside her, hope can still be achieved. It is a great challenge for someone to maintain hope in these conditions (screams of people and cries of families) and without family there to support her, it makes life difficult to maintain. But Alena Synkova, managed to do this, by repeating the lines of her poetry in her head and knowing that soon one day, there will be someone to save her from the terrible situations at the concentration camp. Furthermore, there were people
Introduction to Miss Breed: “Dear Miss Breed: Letters from Camp”, is a collection of over 200 letters sent to Miss Clara Estelle Breed, also known as ‘Miss Breed’, from Japanese Americans imprisoned in the Japanese Interment Camps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Prior to World War II, Miss Breed, was the supervising librarian at the East San Diego Public Library (“Dear Miss Breed”). Through this she was able to become aquatinted with many of the Nisei (second generation Japanese Americans) children within her community. When the United States made the decision to join World War II, the young Nisei children that Miss Breed had come to care for were being forced from their homes and relocated to internment camps. Outraged by the situation,
As humans, we each face conflict in our everyday lives. Conflict is basically anything that happens that a person may disagree with, or not be happy with. Conflict could be something as little as losing your pencil, or something as horrible as the holocaust. For example, Anne Frank was forced into hiding at the age of 13. There was nothing that she could do about it, so she kept her thoughts on the positive side by writing in her diary once or twice a month, and hoping for the best.
On page 286 it states “ they took off garment after garment” Given these points, they did not live in good conditions. They did many daily evening and afternoon activities while in hiding. One of the things Anne did was write in her diary all throughout the day. Mr.
It directs the actions you take, your energy and most of all your thoughts. Life will show up for you according to how you think it is; and if you regularly maintain the belief that life has a consignment of enjoyable things you will find and see them. Do you think Oprah Winfrey would have gotten to where she is now without a positive mindset? I think not. She came from poverty to one of the world’s wealthiest women all because she is one of the biggest believers and supporters of a positive mindset.
If the person in the conflict remains positive, he or she will affect their environment in a positive manner. Elevated mental energies are fostered as a result of a positive
The book Dear Miss Breed was about the young lives of Japanese Americans that were taken to internment camps during WWII and about a libiran who gave them hope. The librarians name was Miss Clara Breed. Miss Bread knew all the children before they were forced into the internment camps. They would write her letters, telling her how much they were depressed and hated the camps. Knowing their condition, on a daily basis, she would give books to the children that were in the camp.
Since the beginning of the human race, people have shown several ways to be cruel to different groups of people. Over time, humans have proved their heinous capabilities, yet there are some people that manage to survive through the mistreatment inflicted upon them by other groups. There are also some people who did not survive the mistreatment that they faced, but still still inspire us with their stories. One of the most well-known examples of such a large amount of inspiration comes from Anne Frank, in Anne Frank: The Diary of a young girl.
Helga Weissova’s sketch depicts a mother and daughter that are tiny and frail due to their time spent in a concentration camp. Although Life is Beautiful is a fictional account of life in a concentration camp, it is still said to be just as good of an example of the Holocaust depicted by Weissova sketch. The Holocaust

Positivity can affect not only one’s self, but those around them as well. In the face of responding to conflict, positivity can reduce stress and anxiety, help health, and provide a better environment. During times of conflict, positivity has been proven to reduce both stress and anxiety. In an article from the Mayo Clinic Staff, they commented that “Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your well-being” (Mayo Clinic Staff).
I go to an all boys school so having a negative attitude is sometimes asking to get hurt. For being positive all around it benefits many of my relationship with my peers as well as my friends. Even if those around me are feeling down or otherwise, being positive creates an environment where they can also begin to feel the same. Prejudice is a huge issue many suffer from across the globe. In a school environment, prejudice is always a call for the worse.
Throughout history, we have had to deal with conflict. How we deal with conflict can be most challenging of all. We all can find our strength to make it through treacherous times. A positive attitude can help a tremendous amount when dealing with conflict. An example of this can be found in The Diary of Anne Frank.
Ronald Reagan once stated “Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means”. In the passage “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank, a story of how a young girl responds to conflict by staying optimistic. In “Dear Miss Breed”, written by Joanne Oppenheim, Japanese children of all ages write letters to Miss Breed that explain the conflicts that the individuals have and how the children overcome and resolve it. Others may say that the most effective way to respond to conflict is to stand up for what a person believes in, however, the best way that people can respond to a conflict is to have a positive outlook because it helps to not focus on the hardships in an individual’s life, alleviates stress, and affects other people 's attitude. If an individual has a vigorous and encouraging outlook on something, it will help not to focus on the ominous events going on in their life.
