What is Physical Education
Physical education focuses on teaching learner’s basic movement concepts as well as practical and specific sports skills that will equip them to be active, healthy and physically fit throughout their entire lives. Physical education tries to promote and the five components of physical fitness and teach learners how to maintain them throughout their lives. These are namely cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. (Gallahue & Cleland Donnely, 2003; Insel & Roth, 2006; Hoeger & Hoeger, 2013) Physical education also needs to address and teach basic motor learning concepts and principles. The components of motor development that are taught and focused on in the curriculum are coordination,

Some of the physical benefits school children gain include; weight control, better sleeping patterns, a sense of wellbeing, mood elevation, less fatigue, increased physical and mental efficiency, a positive relationship with academic performance. It also helps the development of fundamental gross and motor skills in the Foundation Phase specifically, which is the foundation on which fine motor skills are built which effects many important skills including those of reading and writing. (ACSM, 2010; Insel & Roth, 2006; Tompkins et al., 2012; Hoeger & Hoeger, 2013) Physical education can also have a positive impact on certain medical conditions for example diabetes and obesity both of which are becoming more prevalent in South African children. (Steyn, Fourie & Temple, 2006) It is not clear to what extent physical activity effects growth in children however it is clear that it does positively impact growth. If we look at the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement the main aim of physical education should be to positively impact the children’s lifetime exercise patterns. (CAPS 2012) Therefore, we see that physical education is an important part of any child’s school experience many of the skills gained are important building blocks for not only school success, whether academic or physical, but also lifelong success in many …show more content…

The persuasive techniques Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are used to assist the author in their claim and sound convincing. In the articles “Position on Dodgeball in Physical Education,” by The National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and “The Weak Shall Inherit the Gym,” by Rick Reilly, both authors use persuasive techniques to make their claims on dodgeball in physical education. The article, “Position on Dodgeball in Physical Education,” created by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, short for NASPE, focuses on using logos throughout the article. To illustrate, when discussing keeping children and adolescents active it’s stated that, “61.5% of children aged 9-13 years do not participate in any organized physical activity during their non-school hours and 22.6% do not engage in any free-time physical activity”(986).
Participation in high school sports helps promote a physically active lifestyle. High school sports participation has grown from an estimated 4 million participants during the 1971--72 school year to an estimated 7.2 million in 2005--06 (1). However, despite the documented health benefits of increased physical activity (e.g., weight management, improved self-esteem, and increased strength, endurance, and flexibility) (2,3), those who participate in athletics are at risk for sports-related injuries (4,5). High school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations annually (6). To date, the study of these injuries has been limited by inabilities to calculate injury rates, compare results
Physical education, exercise science, and sports professionals all play a significant role in getting students, clients, and players to meet the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 and The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. Having a healthy lifestyle starts at an early phase in life. According to the text, “Adolescence is an important age for developing health habits that will persist into adulthood (79).” With that said, in order for them to have that healthy lifestyle they must become educated about the risks of inactivity as early as possible. Physical education is an “ongoing process of learning” that is incorporated in schools so that students learn to use that knowledge throughout their lives and also learn to enjoy doing it.
Some argue that sports are benefitting the children, while others support the points made by Ripley. However, there is more evidence pointing towards the fact that sports are affecting the learning abilities of In “The Case for High School Sports” by Kai Sato, she raises a point in where she says that
According to , students who exercise or do sports perform better on tests than kids who do
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).

Cardiovascular Response to Exercise Introduction The cardiovascular system, comprising of blood vessels, the heart, and blood, responds predictably with regards to the increased exercise demands (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 62). In a sense, a series of cardiovascular changes take place in response to physical exercise for providing enough blood supply to the constricting muscles, to dissipate the energy produced by active muscles, and to maintain the supply of blood to vital organs of the body such as the brain and the heart (Agarwal et al. CC06).
Throughout the semester, I have gained a better understanding of adapted physical education and sport programs. These programs provide children and adults with an opportunity to participate in sports they may not have thought were possible. The modifications to sport and exercise allows individuals with a range of disabilities to engage in activity. The disabilities can range from a mild learning disability to a permanent condition caused from a serious accident. While observing numerous individuals with disabilities, I was able to obtain a better understanding of the challenges that came with physical activity.
One of the key to the successful teaching of physical education is the use of a broad range of approaches and methodologies. As it is acknowledged that schools, classes and teachers will vary, some methods will suit particular circumstances better than others, and the nature of the strands themselves necessitates the use of a variety of teaching methods. There is a need to examine the teaching methods which will best enhance the achievement of the objectives, taking factors such as the content and context of the lesson into account, as well as the needs of the learner. Teaching means sharing, guiding, changing behavior, impressing, disciplining, counseling, directing and inspiring. Good teaching is a process of producing end products of
First, I will describe the relationship between exercise and academic performance. Many studies have been conducted to explore this relation, one being a University of Illinois study in which students age 9 to 10 were tested on their endurance by running on a treadmill. After
A study shows that “The exercise programs may actually enhance the development of specific types of mental processing known to be important, for meeting challenges encountered both in academics and later in life.” Also, the athletes are improved since high school. The kids that play sports have a higher chance to be smarter, and be physically well. The best part of sports is that you can improve major parts of your life, which is physical health, psychological health, social skills, and academic
Physical education would start in just about 1820 when schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the human body. By the year 1950, over 400 institutes had introduced majors in physical education. Colleges were encouraged to focus on intramural sports particularly track, field and football. But now, in the 21st Century schools are starting to rethink if they should have it in their curriculum. In our era right now children are becoming more obese and overweight than ever due to all of the electronic distractions in today 's society.
604 assignments 1 1) Concepts and structure This essay will first answer what is skill theme approach? It is a model that describes both content of physical education (what to teach) and pedagogy of physical education (how to teach) (Graham, Holt/Hale, & Parker, 2010). Teachers structures the learning, give detailed and repeated instructions, ask large number of questions.
