A foil character is someone who is the complete opposite of another character. In Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urberville, Alec and Angel seem to be foil characters to one another. Alec and Angel represent the type of men in Tess’s life, Alec being the villain and Angel being the hero, but these characters are more complex than that. These two characters are made out to be foil characters but can be seen as similar in many areas. Even though Angel and Alec seem polar opposites of each other, their actions and behavior with Tess continuously show how similar they really are and how difficult it is to label them as good or evil.
As soon as these characters are introduced, Hardy conveys the type of character they are set up to be with Angel being

Angel does this when he asks Tess to marry him and she refuses. He asks her over and over again and asks why she won’t marry him. Alec tries to seduce Tess on two different occasions in the novel. The first time was in the beginning of the novel when Tess first gets the job at the d’Urberville house and the second time was when Alec sees Tess again and follows her from the Flintcomb Ash Farm, to her house, and to Kingsbere. Angel also similarly tries to get near to Tess when they are in the rain delivering milk to the station and he says, “Creep close to me, and perhaps the drizzle won’t hurt you much” (190). They are also similar in their treatment of Tess and how they view her. Alec views her as a object and she is “like a puppet” to him and also calls himself her master. Angel also sees Tess as an object and falls in love with an idealized Tess. Angel and Alec dress Tess up making her like a doll or an object they can change. Their love of Tess may differ, but their actions show how similar they actually …show more content…
After discovering that Tess is a fallen woman, Angel does not seem to recognize Tess to be the person he once knew. He tells her that “You were one person; now you are another” (235), and also says he does not love her but “ Another women in your shape” (236). Angel looks at Tess as if she is a whole other person and leaves her because of it. Meanwhile when Alec sees Tess for the second time and explains to her how he is still in love with her offering to marry her to make things right. He again tries to pursue her for sexual reasons and says “...I was your master once! I will be your master again” (344). Even though Alec seems evil he constantly reminds Tess that he is the only person seeking her out and devoting time to try to help Tess escape from her horrible situation. Alec even offers to help her family telling her, “We’ll get up a regular colony of fowl, and your mother can attend to them excellently; and the children can go to school” (369). With Angel nowhere to be seen, Alec offers to help Tess and her family, even though it maybe just to win Tess over. But Angel and Alec are similar when Angel realizes he has done wrong by Tess and returns to win her back. Angel tries his best to win Tess back by telling her that he still loved her and that “...my mother and father will welcome you now!” (394). He is now willing to help Tess and love her
You’re the stupid one, to think that you could fool us. I can read minds, you idiot.” (390). This is showing that Angel had to reveal that it was the fake Max so the rest of the flock would know and believe the real Max. Angel did what she had to do for the sake of the flock staying
(297). The Scare Crow told Finn “There are a lot of people here. This may take a while. Maybe forever” (297) but Finn’s deep care for Roza kept him determined to find her no matter how long it took. As he swam through the sea of hanging bodies, he remembers what Petey told him about being face blind; he recognizes people by the way they move and certain features about them.
Tom, a young individual, has to find his own way without any help from his mum. Tess do not try to develop herself – all she does is lie on the bed. Like Aunty Kath argues, ‘At least that’d be doing something, it’s not too late for that’ (Page 155) She does not improve any situations and I can 100% guarantee that teenagers hate those characters who over-drags the scenes, like
However, it is revealed in the end of the story what kind of person Noah really is compared to who Skylar thought he was. “Next thing I knew I was punched then pushed to the ground. All I could do was scream, he put his hand over my mouth and started to hit me harder”, Noah rapes Skylar after she is invited inside his home. The author’s words create a vivid image and realistic atmosphere. This plot twist stunned readers with the unexpected, some readers may have thought that this was the start of a love story, others a friendship, but it turned out to be a horror story for Skylar.
Unfortunately the angel didn’t reply and left many people questioning as to why he doesn’t get annoyed with them. Others were trying to get the fathers of his wings to try and “fix” their broken body parts. Yet the angel almost never got furious with the onlookers. It was a matter of time before another creature had arrived in the town. This creature was a woman with the body of a spider and the head of a person.
In summary, Bartleby is an introverted and selfish man who focuses on himself, in contrast with the Narrator who is extroverted and thinks too much about others’ well being. Bartleby also does what he wants at any given moment when the Narrator does what is expected of him. The Narrator fully grasps life when Bartleby has given up on life itself. Going to the second foil between Turkey and/or Nippers and the main character. Turkey and Nippers are portrayed as highly emotionally unstable men.
Some say that opposites attract; in some cases they do and in some they do not. A foil is a character who is opposite of another character in order to highlight certain characteristics in both characters. An example of foils in a play that Shakespeare wrote, Romeo and Juliet, including rambunctious Tybalt and the tranquil Benvolio. Another example is the obnoxious funny Mercutio and the lovey dovey Romeo. Romeo and Juliet was a Shakespearean play written 1595 by William Shakespeare.
In the book when she is in Williamson she feels she can not be her normal self like she is in Garden Heights. Her boyfriend had to pressure her into being more like herself because she kept complaining that she couldn’t be herself. Also in the story, her friend Hailey is racist because she doesn’t see what is so wrong with the Khalil situation. There are also other times like when they are playing basketball in chapter 7, Hailey says “Pretend the ball is some fried chicken. Bet you’ll stay on it then.”
In almost every book ever written, there are characters that bring out the differences of others. Whenever the author, rather than plainly stating the characteristics, uses other characters to imply the traits of another character, it is called a character foil. In “Much Ado About Nothing,” there are many people that act as foils of each other. In the book “Much Ado About Nothing” written by William Shakespeare, Beatrice is a foil to Hero because of their differing personalities, actions, and opinions. Beatrice and Hero are foils to each other because of their contrasting personalities.
Jimmy Cross is the first lieutenant who carries pictures and letters from Martha, the woman he loves who—sadly—does not love him back. The pictures and letters from Martha symbolize Jimmy’s longing to be loved and comforted. It is ironic that although he is the first lieutenant who is expected to take charge and lead others, yet he never took charge of his own love life. This is a regret and burden Cross carries to the end of the story. “It was very sad, he thought.
Along with his military gear, O’Brien states, “Lieutenant Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha up the hills and through the swamps” (p. 115). Cross loves Martha, and “More than anything, he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her” (p. 114), but is unsure of whether she loves him back. Despite his uncertainty,
This small question symbolizes a veil being lifted off the reader, as suddenly images of religious figures might be pictured in their head, most of them being shown as Caucasian individuals. The color white has been used to symbolize purity and goodness for years, however Billy Collins is questioning whether or not that symbolism carries over to angels as well. The reader can see that he is questioning angels very nature, through the use of symbolism, in his second question. As the question “ Do they swing like children from hinges” symbolizes
