As part of the nursing pathway at school, we are given an opportunity to work one on one with real residents at a nursing home. When I began working with these wonderful people, I was saddened by their inactivity and complacency. As a result I wanted to be a source of their joy not just a care giver doing a job. Therefore I dedicated myself to create an atmosphere where these humble residents are able to enjoy their golden years. Nonetheless I began to create a strong bond with the residents I would read to them, talk to them, as well as care for them. In a short time, my attitude was infectious as many of my classmates began to set goals in order to bring a bit more sunshine into the dreary place. As a result these retirees are bound to live out their lives. …show more content…
I learned, there are numerous families who undergo a struggle each day just to get food on the table. Although I wished I could do more, I was very humbled to be able to carry their food to their vehicle, knowing that they wouldn 't go home with an empty belly. Throughout this experience I began to build a bond with the local citizens while empathizing their situation. Even though I wasn 't able to do much... I am pleased to be able to be a part of the food pantry. A small entity that made a huge difference to families in
My professional history includes positions such as nursing in my country as well as a staff in Hollydale Lodge, a low care nursing house in Melbourne. As a nurse in my country, I can observe the dangerous signals on the patients. When I work in Hollydale Lodge, I understand the procedure of living in a nursing home. Some duties are similar to accomplish as in a high care nursing home. In addition, after the placement of aged care, I can assist the residents successfully.
Sometimes, we would have people come to our home for treatments as well. Our home had become a place of healing for the broken, both literally and metaphorically. Our home had being set apart from many others. I learnt the importance of love, care, and support. My first opportunity personally interacting with patients was after I became a certified nursing assistant (CNA); I took a job at a Skilled Nursing Home called York land Park.
Additionally, this experience helped me to develop effective therapeutic communication techniques and enforce skills to provide enhanced care for the resident. An improvement that I would make for next semester is to improve my execution and time management while performing tasks. I intend to perform skills with greater confidence and improve my overall interactions with the patients, families, and health care workers. Improving these interactions will benefit in the overall comfort of the patient and improve the care that I will provide to them. Overall, this Long Term Care experience provided me with the necessary fundamental skills practice and critical thinking development that will be utilized in the following semesters and throughout my nursing
Currently I am volunteering as a worker at our local food pantry downtown. The pantry is called Hope Distribution and is part of the Catholic Charities program sponsored by the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church. I am volunteering here working the front desk keeping tracks on the clients that utilize our pantry. We issue intake forms for new clients and mark the frequency that a client in need comes to the pantry. Here, I also help guide them throughout the pantry assisting them with the items that they are allowed to make choices on.
Description: In week 7 we had visited Wesburn Manor, the Long-term Care (Clinical Placement) setting. It was our first time there, therefore as a group, we oriented the place. At this time, we went to each nursing station on each floor and introduced ourselves from the organization we were from and how we will be providing patient care to the clients in this setting. We were educated by our clinical instructor on the different access codes in the building, the policies and guidelines, our assigned floor and the appointed personal support worker. Our role of professionalism as a nursing student was represented as we came prepared and greeted each healthcare and staff member.
My true aha moment came in January 2014 when I was taking a social entrepreneurship class at the local community college. I realized I could turn my worst fear – not having access to gluten free and allergy-friendly food when I needed it – into something that could truly help others. That was when the S.A.F.E. Food Pantry moved from an idea to my personal mission. The S.A.F.E. – Supplying Allergy Friendly and Emergency – Food Pantry is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Howard County, Maryland.

Monday, October 12th, I completed service hours at the nursing home. I had the opportunity to take elderly residents for walks. I took 2 different residents for thirty minute walks. The two women I walked with were Rosalee and Marilyn. I walked them each around the walking track one time.
After the sudden loss of my oldest brother in 2011, my life changed in the blink of an eye. While trying to overcome this heartbreaking experience was one of the most challenging things ever faced with, his death soon turned into a true inspiration to me. Not only do I cherish all the memories I was able to share with him over the years, I soon came to realization that tomorrow is not a promise to anyone and to live life to the fullest. With this being said, having the opportunity to have an impact on someone everyday whether through communication, actions and/or attitude to help heal is something very powerful to me. Nursing is a profession that allows individuals to open new doors to learn something new and making the best of everyday for each
Even though I was in a room full of other people that could of helped; I was the one who did it, which made me feel great. My small act inpacted everyone by making them think about what they could do. This experience can taught me one THING: a small action can make a big diffrece.
There are two main ways this service has made a difference in my life. The first way is that now I am more aware of what’s going on in the community. The community I was working with was a low-income community and most of the students received reduced lunch. This community needed a lot of support and help from the school.
Organizing a food pantry or closet for an entire day absolutely applies to the role of a school social worker. One of our main priorities is making sure that the needs of our students are being met. I have seen firsthand how being hungry greatly affects a student and his or her performance in the classroom. Not having basic needs met affects concentration, attentive, and a child’s ability to perform his or her best. After considering how I feel when I am hungry, I cannot imagine how a child must feel after missing several meals.
However, throughout the obstacles we have overcome together as a group, we have seen each other at our worst, and at our best. We have each developed life long memories that will be talked about for years to come, and have established enduring friendships. They say that friends you make in nursing school will last you a lifetime; before this program, I might’ve doubted this statement. However, now, after meeting whom I now consider my best friend, Joti, I couldn’t agree more. In difficult times in which we all saw each other more than we even saw our friends and families, we gave one another a shoulder to lean on.
Seeing how excited my grandfather was to see me and my family and how bored everyone else at the nursing home was made me realize that the residents were yearning for social interaction and were not engaged with the outside world. From there, I applied for the E.E. Ford community service fellowship, pitched my project idea of using technology to improve these residents’ lives, and proceeded to work at Nathaniel Witherell the following summer. - Tell us about a particularly motivating or challenging moment you've had in doing this
This experience has inspired me to go into the medical field. Therefore, the hospital was the perfect path to take in order to learn more about the medical field. I’ve received many opportunities to sit between nurses, doctors, patients, and other health professionals (careers that were unknown to me). Those moments were very precious because I knew for sure that I wouldn’t have gotten any other chance to experience the challenges that health professionals face every day. The hospital has taught me to value life because I have witnessed life coming out of the hands of death and realize how we take little things for
