In the novel “The Outsiders” , by S.E Hinton, Darry made a choice that ultimately drove the plot. Ponyboy comes home late at night , and Darry caught and yelled furiously at him for being out late and as Soda tries to defend him he became angry and slapped Ponyboy. The moment when Ponyboy came home, Darry acts furious as the text states, “Where have you been? Do you know what time it is.’ He was madder than I’d seen him in a long time. I shook my head wordlessly .’ Well it’s two in the morning kiddo” (Hinton 49). As Soda spoke up Darry gave him a talking to as the text reveals,”Darry…” Soda began, Darry turned on him.’You keep your trap shut! I’m sick and tired of hearin’ you stick up for him” (Hinton 50). This triggered Ponyboy to freak out
