Fraternity In Sororities

Through research online, I am aware that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was founded at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on January 5th, 1911 by ten visionary men; Elder Watson Diggs, Ezra D. Alexander, Byron Kenneth Armstrong, Henry Thomas Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Paul Waymond Caine, George Wesley Edmonds, Guy Levis Grant, Edward Giles Irvin and John Milton Lee. Also through my research, I have learned that the organization is comprised of men who aim to carry out its motto of “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor.” And that due to the organizations focus on leadership and service, I am aware of some of its well-known initiatives such as the Kappa Beautillion from the Guide Right Program, Kappa League and its philanthropy

When looking at college campuses, there are enormous percentages of women and men that are sexually assaulted every year. Who is inflicting a majority of these acts? Men involved in sports/athletics and fraternities. According to “Fraternities and Rape on Campus,” an article assigned in class, it states “[Fraternities] work hard to create a macho image and context and try to avoid any suggestion of "wimpishness," effeminacy, and homosexuality. Valued members display, or are willing to go along with, a narrow conception of masculinity that stresses competition, athleticism, dominance, winning, conflict, wealth, material possessions, willingness to drink alcohol, and sexual prowess vis-a-vis women” (Hummer, Martin 460).

1. Lisa Wade explores the culture of sex within college campuses and how it has impacted the lives of the students she has researched in her book American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus. A major issue that she probes is the fact that her students are lonely and not in a physical way, but rather a mental way. The presence of hookup culture is causing students to feel out of place, unempowered, and objectified based on their traits. The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.

In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.

At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures.  One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.

Going to college could seem stressful for most students, especially when going to a college full of new people and trying to find a place that 'll accept you for you. For people who have felt like this usually becomes interested in the organizations related to “greek life”. Greek life basically means joining a sorority or fraternity. But expanding on to being in a organization that is lifelong and has a great meaning behind it that stands on it’s own supporting values. Greek life comes with much variety to these organizations.

Many people expect to go to college for an education, however not knowing that they could be possible rape victims. Today rape is the most common crime to happen on college campuses. One in five women, and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted in

The most common crime in American colleges is rape. Twenty percent of women are sexually assaulted in college and only five percent are reported. It is common for a woman to be raped by an acquaintance than a stranger. In most cases, women are assaulted after being drugged, at a party, or studying in a dorm room alone. There are several steps colleges could take to prevent and stop rape on campuses.

College, and college life is something you think that never ends but something that comes to an by a snap. As we come into college, we join in multiple activities and organizations to get involved. One of the highly-participated or known to be organizations on campuses are Greek life. For some students, Greek life is something new, but for others it was known as they become seniors, or from their sibling and cousins. A myth or fact of brotherhood and sisterhood?!

Dorothy Siegel’s argument in the essay “What Is Behind the Growth of Violence on College Campuses?” is persuasive. Siegel persuades the reader by presenting her points and validating them with facts and statistics. One of the strongest aspects of the argument is that contrary to popular belief, students are committing a majority of the crimes that take place on college campuses; the students “themselves may become the assailants”, not persons from outside of the campus. She further supported this by pointing out that students tend to know their attackers. Another strong aspect of her argument is that campus violence is due to substance abuse.

Fraternities and Sororities: Why They Should be Banned The Greek system at collegiate level has been a major part of universities for many decades. Universities nationwide continue to contemplate abolishing fraternities and sororities because of how much trouble they deliberately cause and the negative connotation they give to the college. Since the beginning, fraternities and sororities have promoted elitism and the exclusion of others. Fraternities and sororities are progressively becoming more and more virulent because they are rarely punished for their wrongdoings.
