Wikipedia is a site that most people take advantage of on a regular basis. Generally, the site is thought a great resource for researching subjects or just to learn about special topics. However, Wikipedia has a pronounced gender bias. Most of the writers and contributors are male. Studies show that nearly 90 percent of the contributors are male. Recently, a group met in Brooklyn. They devised an edit-a-thon to discuss the Wikipedia gender gap. Their hope was to cover more women in the arts. The notable bias has led to a hostile environment for female writers. Thus, resulting in less topics of interest to women.

Women in Canada have struggled for many years to redefine the roles they play in society, demanding justice and equality. These efforts yet continue to occur through politics, economics, law, and literature, all to gain formal equality. Women eventually turned to feminist literature realizing that legal, political, and institutional modifications will not assist them entirely in the fight for egalitarianism (The Canadian Encyclopedia). The sciences continue to be more male dominated, expecting a fewer number of women to write traditional science fiction literature.
The Treatment of Women in Literature Since the beginning of time, women have always been considered less than or inferior to men. Although, the treatment of women has improved tremendously and women are seeing more opportunities than ever before, we still have a long way to go. Until recently, the majority of published writers were men and the depiction of women in literature was mainly one sided. No matter what time period or culture, women in literature usually take the back seat to men. The once popular TV drama series, Twin Peaks, which was created in 1990, and Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,” which was published in 1970, but was probably written in the 50s or 60s, are perfect examples of this.
In the book, The Rise of Enlightened Sexism by Susan Douglas, gives insight and knowledge that digs deep into pop culture explaining how the media portrays the appearances of women that are in powerful positions in our culture. The appetencies tent undermines the actual progress of women. Douglas is interested in what these pop culture ideals shows about our culture. The way we react to women in our culture with powerful influence. What do these shows do to the female imagine in our culture?
After skimming through Volume 1 of The Norton Anthology Literature by Women, I noticed the reoccurring themes of patriarchy, women subordination, and the strength to be creative despite oppression. During the times that these literary pieces were written, women were constantly battling the patriarchy in order to get basic rights. During the earlier time periods, intelligence was seen as a sign of an evil spirit in a woman, resulting in miniscule amounts of literary works written by women. Women were not provided with equal spaces to creatively express themselves, as mentioned by Virginia Woolf. Moreover, they were not given the same publishing opportunities, many women either went anonymous or by a fake male name to have their works published.
There is definitely a problem when we talk about gender equality and sexism. It's everywhere: in movies, commercials on television, in music videos, at the workplace and even at school. The gender biases are blatant. One of the sources of the problem lies in the media and the way the media portrays women. For example, the function of an assistant can be fulfilled by both a man and a woman, but when we look at movies and commercials, we often think that it is weird when the assistant of a powerful man is not a woman but a man.
In the play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there are many examples of sexism throughout its entirety. The character, Walter, demonstrates the acts of a sexist human being. Walter is sexist to not only women in general, but to the women in his family. Not taking into consideration of other people’s sayings and their feelings, Walter generally only thinks about himself, says what he believes, and truly only cares about money. Walter constantly is fighting with all of the women in the family as well.

Gender inequality is not a new topic. Throughout history, women have faced significant sexist discrimination starting with being denied basic rights enjoyed by men. In many societies, women have been categorized as inferior to men. Greek poet, Homer, consistently highlighted this ‘women are inferior’ theme throughout his writings of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Even though this degradation of women has currently been brought to light in the 21st century, it continues to remain a serious issue.
Advertising is displayed all around the world for everyone to see and it sometimes gives a bad message to the viewers. Advertisements tell us that there is only one dominant way to be feminine and only one dominant way to be masculine and if you do not conform to these gender codes that is not considered normal. Unfortunately, I have caught myself following these gender codes that are shown in advertising, it has affected me with the way I see people and myself. By using a sociological perspective I have started to look into the advertisements that I see and understand how women are portrayed as helpless and weak while men are portrayed as powerful and dominant. I also looked into how advertising supports hegemonic masculinity, which is the idea of masculinity being dominant.
Sexism is an issue that’s plagued humanity for thousands of years. In 2016 in the majority of the world, women achieve the same opportunities for education and higher learning as men do whether school, college, internet education, learning on the job etc. therefore, the very concept of the female inferiority is illogical and impractical. However, due to how deeply rooted sexism has become in society, it’s difficult to say whether progress has eliminated sexism or not. Progress has a positive connotation; it involves advancement, development, and growth into a better form of whatever focus is at hand, therefore we must evaluate the growth of our society and culture and examine whether sexism has decreased at all and if it has, whether it was the growth of our society and culture that stimulated the decrease of sexism.
Annotated Bibliography Gender equality in the workforce is a subject that has been researched throughout the years. Following the Civil Rights Movement in 1964 when sexual discrimination was outlawed, and in 1967 when President Johnson amended the bill in 1967. Researchers believe that discrimination is a thing of the past. Although, in 2012 Walmart faced nationwide lawsuits for discrimination (Hines, 2012).
According to the Oxford dictionary gender is defined as being male or female, often used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. For example Biology says 'It 's a Girl! ', and Gender says 'We 'll buy those pink outfits, the Barbie’s and the Dolls House!". One might be born a woman or a man, but that does not necessarily mean that one is therefore born to be either a housewife/homemaker. The media and advertising are at fault for how gender is portrayed on adverts they create gender roles which the public perceive as the correct way to behave. Lips (2001: p14) said that Gender role refers to the attitudes, behaviour, and activities that are socially defined as appropriate for each sex & are learned through the socialization process.
