Gender Roles In J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls

In J.B. Priestley's play "An Inspector Calls," Mr Birling is portrayed as a wealthy businessman and a prominent member of the community. He is the head of a family that represents the upper class of Edwardian society, and his views and opinions reflect the prevailing attitudes of his time. Mr Birling's views on gender are typical of the patriarchal and conservative attitudes of his time. He believes that women should be submissive and should not have a say in political or economic matters.

In The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Esperanza, begins a silent fight against gender roles. As a woman, she is expected to be quiet and polite. Esperanza, a passionate young girl, desires to be stronger than that. Esperanza is young, but she already sees what she is meant to be in life.

Throughout history there have been standers that have been set by the time, that men and women have followed. Many men and women have had to follow the male and female roles set by society, the macula role and the feminine role. Each defining the way a person acts and how they are perceived by others. In the short story Franny by J.D. Salinger a young college student names Franny and her boyfriend Lane spend their time in a restaurant after being apart for a while. The spend most other there time taking in the restaurant then eating.

An Inspector Calls explores the effect of class, age and people’s attitudes to responsibility and how prejudice can prevent people from taking responsibility in society. Arthur Birling, a wealthy capitalist and pretentious man, began the cycle of events that led to Eva Smith’s suicide. Mr. Birling runs his own factory and believes that survival of the fittest. Priestley emphasises his beliefs on capitalism through Mr. Birling dealing with Eva Smith demanding a pay rise.

J.B Priestly wrote ‘An Inspector Calls’ in 1945, the last year of World War 2 but sets it in 1912 a time of inequality where upper and lower class was distinguished and treated differently within society and where a big gap existed among poor and rich people. The play introduces us to the theme of social inequality and social responsibility displaying the fact that trade unions were very weak, workers had few rights, wages were very low and many other injustices where made specially towards women; they were treated very differently then men and they were looked on as less important in society. Lighting is changed at the arrival of the Inspector "The lighting should be pink and intimate until the Inspector arrives, and then it should be brighter and harder" this displays a contrast between scenes and atmosphere. It also shows the change in mood; suggesting a cheerful environment and a very joyfully and delight mood, everybody feeling thrilled for Shelia 's engagement and celebrating united as a family. The repition of "I am a hard headed man of business" shows his arrogance and his capitalistic and emotionless mentality. "I say there isn't a chance of war" show his stubborn and arrogance. Priestly uses this dramatic irony to persuade the audience to side against Birling as they will think that he is foolish, unsympathetic and untrustworthy. As of portraying their stubborn and heard headed personality was not enough, Priestly makes it sure that the audience is able to clearly see mentality and coldness that capitalism brings to a human by making men emotionless and unsympathetic. "Well, we've several hundred young women there, y'know, and they keep changing.

The Crucible Essay The following essay will illustrate how Elizabeth Proctor lying to protect her husband, John Proctor, is ironic and enhances the drama in the play The Crucible. In the play this event makes John look like a liar to the court. To save his life John must sign a confession that says he practiced witchcraft, he refuses. Unfortunately this event ultimately leads to the death of John Proctor.

In the opening of the play the Inspector begins to question Mr Birling after dinner about a photo of a young girl. Mr Birling is shown to be narrow minded in the opening of an Inspector calls. He is displayed as this through his poor political understanding , his business minded views as well as this distancing him from people. In An Inspector Calls the character Sheila changes and matures significantly throughout the play. Priestly aims to encourage and persuade the 1912 audience to consider the negative power of capitalists and that socialism is a better way forward. Sheila contributes to Priestly’s moral message about socialism and capitalism by emphasising the possibility for change which is up to the younger generation. At the start of the play, Sheila is portrayed as a spoiled daughter who has been taught to be submissive to her parents.

In the play An Inspector Calls written by J.B Priestley, the use of morality and double standards gives us an insight into the society of the early 1900s; which remains relevant in social stratification, cultural and deviance aspects. Through the story of Arthur Birling, Mrs. Sybil Birling and their children Eric and Sheila. The upper-class family, with untouchable reputation, enjoy of an intimate party soiree in honour of Sheila's engagement to Gerald Croft. Son of a well-known business man, Sir George Croft from Crofts Limited. When Inspector Goole pays a mood-changing visit, resulting in the systematic manipulation of the presumably respectable characters.

Inspector Goole is a mysterious figure. His name calls to mind the word 'ghoul ', which is defined as an evil spirit or phantom ghost, Although he is deeply bothered and concerned by Eva Smith 's suicide and the concept of societies morals. He is ghost-like in the sense that he doesn 't officially exist. The fact that we don 't officially know who or what the inspector is at the end of the play leaves whether Inspector Goole is real or not open to interpretation of the individual members of the audience. My personal belief he is that of something similar to that of the ghosts of christmas from Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” who 's purpose is too make a person aware of their morals and force them to confront their wrong doing.

One of the several themes that Priestley has introduced to the play is ‘Time,’ and this theme not only interlinks with some others like ‘Age and Youth’ and ‘Social Responsibility,’ but also introduces a very important drama technique into the play for the audience called the dramatic irony. In Act One, Mr. Birling, as a representative of the older generation of the play and the head of the family, is talking to the others about the progress humanity is making and mentions the liner, Titanic saying it is “unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable.” The word ‘absolutely’ in this context shows just how confident in his words Mr. Birling is, without understanding that it will all change. As the play is set back in 1912, but is performed much later in 1946, after the audience knows, and finds it ironic that Mr. Birling, thinking he is an old, wise man says such nonsense, as time will show.

In this essay I will be comparing two female characters from different texts and different time periods. We will be looking in depth at Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare 's play 'Macbeth ', and Sheila from J.B. Priestley 's 'An Inspector Calls '. We will be looking at their roles in their respective plays, and how their characters develop over time. It is clear that both ladies are in strong relationships, but how they act within these relationships is vastly different.
