Throughout society and literature, there are various gender roles that once established, they became a norm which led to many characters and views to blindly follow such roles. Despite that, there are people and authors alike who try to break down gender roles and try get others to rid themselves of traditional gender roles. One such author is Noelle Stevenson, the creator of the graphic novel Nimona, which follows the story of a supposed young girl who can shape shift while being the sidekick of the notorious villain Ballister Blackheart. Stevenson, though breaking away from the majority of gender norms, still purposely includes some inside of Nimona herself, such as the ‘damsel in distress’ trope. This notion shows to the readers that no one should be locked into one role and can display traits traditionally for specific genders. Which can be seen in Nimona, as she for the most part, displays that of a non-traditional female role as she is the only one in the graphic novel willing to be calm and cool headed while nonchalantly murdering people. Such a switch in non-traditional roles is when Nimona goes to rescue Blackheart and not the other way around, however by attempting this, got captured herself. “We expected her to attempt a rescue attempt-especially with us broadcasting the news of your impending execution” (Stevenson 190). Having Nimona being extremely capable and independent yet still end up captured at some point during the story allows readers to see how Nimona encompasses various aspects of both gender roles. Do you really know what went down in the 1930s? There was a lot of behind the scene events going on in the 1930s, that not everyone really paid attention to. Some people may have just wanted to not be apart of these events or some people may have not even known about it. The life of the 1930s included many occasions where there were females treated unfairly because of gender stereotypes, there has also been an occasion where a bunch of female swimmers came together and fought for longer swimming hours for their pool time, and there was also a massive shooting at the University of Washington state targeting only the women.
In Goddess of Yesterday, Caroline Cooney suggests that Anaxandra represents a strong female character in a male dominated society. Although the novel has a female main character, the rest of the world around her is very man-controlled. For example, on her birth island all women are expected to stay home while men work. Also, she proves that she is smart and has learned a lot which is uncommon for woman. Another example is that Anaxandra stands up to different men throughout the story which would scare a lot of other women.

In the novel “Anthem,” all of the members of a collective society conform to a set of regulations where everyone is equal and together at all times. Equality 7-2521’s eventual assessment of his sin is correct because he often feels safer on his own, and isolation causes him to make incredible discoveries. Women 100 years ago were treated differently than the women in today’s society, we, as a whole are still treated with inequality. Although, women have more rights today than what women 100 years ago had. Men and other women still believe women shouldn’t be equal with men because of their femininity. 100 years ago, women didn’t work hard, women didn’t get to vote, and women didn’t have a voice in what goes on. Thanks to powerful feminists such as; Susan B. Anthony, Alice Stone Blackwell, Helen Keller, and more, we have the rights that we do today.
In The Matrix, it is set up to show the strengths that a woman can have right from the beginning. The first scene that the audience is introduced to focuses on Trinity’s capabilities and powers against the agents and police. It is so action-packed and fast-paced that the audience can understand how superhuman it is for Trinity to have gotten away. A cop even says, “We can handle one little girl” but is proven wrong in the following scenes shortly after with Trinity launching a set of fighting skills that is on par with the male characters if not better. Being called a little girl is belittling and implies that the rest of the world believes her to be weak, but she openly outruns the cops and escapes through her own abilities.

Although female superheroes have always been present in cinema they have been limited in their exposure and always outnumbered by males. What really distinguishes Wonder Woman as a female superhero is that she is the first heroine belonging to a superhero team who was granted with her own separate movie.
