George W. Bush's Relationship With History

The two major political party candidates from the election of 1988 is George Bush and Michael Dukakis. The political positions that the candidate George Bush held before seeking presidency was being a vice president for President Ronald Reagan and for Dukakis he was a governor for Massachusetts. The more liberal candidate was Dukakis because he was a democrat and the more conservative was Bush because he was a republican. Dukakis was more challenged by people in his own party during the primary election because the democrats thought that their party would need to win it all also they refused renomination. Since the Democrats had lost the 1984 presidential election, the Democrats in 1985 and 1986 were happy to find a new way to win the presidency.

I am writing this research about “Babe Ruth.” He was mostly famous because of baseball. Also his actual name is “George Herman Ruth Jr.” Babe Ruth has a lot of success and failures in life. “George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland to parents George Sr. and Kate” (baberuth.com). Why was his presidency so influential? Polk accomplished without hardly any hardships—the objectives many presidents couldn’t succeed. A man who accomplished it all in one term. His accomplishments still do not go unrecognized, and reporters state that “his triumphant record once led historians to call Polk’s presidency an impressive success,”(Wilent).

The role of the President of the United States of America is defined by those who have held the office. The vagueness of the Constitution has allowed the power of the office to grow and shrink with the personal differences of the men who have held the position. The presidency is not just effected by those who hold the position, the institutional environment and the society of the time also take a massive role in determining the power and effectiveness of the presidency. Theodore Roosevelt and Andrew Jackson are two of the most influential presidents because they were adored by the people. Roosevelt and Jackson both stretched the power of the presidency in ways that were never envisioned by the framers of the constitution.

An imperial presidency is dangerous because it gives one person the unequivocal power to rule over a country. In the year 2012, Harvard Law professor Jack Goldsmith published a novel called Power and Constraint: The Accountable Presidency After 9/11 about whether or not an imperial presidency is achievable. He states that due to the accountability checks we have on government and the democratic process a 21st-century imperial president could not exist.

This speech was made even more important after a tragedy like 9/11 because the nation had been frightened by these acts of terror and was in need of the inspiration of our most powerful leader: the commander-in-chief.
