We begin our year working with the novel "Lord of the Flies" and view it through the eyes of Sigmund Freud 's id, ego and super-ego theories. This unit specifically looks at literary analysis and introduces the thesis essay. Our next units follow the social studies curriculum and are run more like a civics class. We will be starting our antebellum/Cival War unit in January. This unit focuses on research skills and argumentative writing. From there we go to our Gilded Age unit. This unit is heavily based on thesis writing and research. After that we move to a historical fiction unit revolving around WWI. We deepen research and writing skills in this unit. We finish our year with a Holocaust unit where students choose a book based on the Holocaust.

It was the first shift of power in the United State 's government since it had become a country. To Jefferson and his supporters, the defeat of the Federalists ended their attempt to lead America on a more conservative and less democratic course. The election of 1800 was appropriately named the “Revolution of 1800” because it had long-lasting impact on the United States in terms of politics and economics.
Samuel Clemens born in 1835 acquired the name Mark Twain in Virginia City after taking a job at a leading daily newspaper making $25 a week. It was during that time that he began signing the name "Mark Twain" to his columns. Mark Twain referenced the late 1800’s the "Gilded Age." The Gilded period once was considered to be a temporary era between Reconstruction and the Progressive Movement. The Gilded era became known as the beginnings of modern America.
William Jennings Brown was a beloved orator and political figure from the 1890’s till his death in the 1925. He was known for his abilities to capture a crowd and keep them enthralled for hours as he talked about anything. From an early age though he knew that he wanted to be like his father, following in his footsteps to the political realm. He made good use of his oratory skills and created a whole new way of running a presidential campaign. He also helped to create the bases for many new ideas that would lead to Franklin Roosevelts, New Deal Plan.
Good morning students and teachers. I honestly can't believe I've made it through my last year of schooling here at Southern Cross. Throughout my senior English studies, I have realised that individuality is something that is unfortunately lost amongst the trends and expectations of a developing society. Especially in regards to adolescents, I believe that it can be incredibly difficult to maintain a sense of independence and uniqueness in a society where everyone is expected to conform to the majority. Over the last two years, texts such as “The Kite Runner”, Shakespeare's “Othello”, Robert Frost's “Into My Own”, and the film “The Breakfast Club” have definitely inspired me to be myself and to stay true my own beliefs.
As a means to make sure that the correct people get the credit and recognition for changing history, one must fully recognize the importance of who freed the slaves. Thus, correcting historical records to match the evidence of who ultimately, freed the slaves. Historian Ira Berlin stated, “Such interest in a document whose faded words cannot be easily seen, let alone deciphered. . . raises important questions about the role of history in the way Americans think about their racial past and present.” If historical records are fixed to give much due recognition it will change how Americans think about and view the past.

The reading in the second unit was a learning experience. In the reading LeGrand Richards, Lisa Nielsons, and Thomas Plummer showed their approaches of critical thinking. Each writer displayed the different and unique way to expand the thinking level of the reader. They expressed how to analyze and evaluate topics in order to create better judgment. During the Gilded age that happened between 1877-1900 which was also known as the early part of the industrial revolution, this time included leaders, entrepreneurs,and new technologies.
