Golden Valley Academy Mission Statement

“Kids at Hope” has become a part of the Herndon High School’s framework for all students and the entire staff. Kids at Hope is “a strategic, cultural framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for all children, no exceptions”. It is a cultural framework with strategies based on three leading principles and practices: We Believe, We Connect and We Time Travel. The “We Connect” component of Kids at Hope supports the notion that as long as children have meaningful and sustainable relationship with caring adults they will be successful. Those caring adults are called the ACES.

Teachers do not only teach their pupils math, science, history and other facts, but these educators teach them how to think and solve problems in order to develop the students’ character. Westside says in their vision statement that “They (students) are inspired and equipped to excel academically, think critically, and understand that what they learn is a gift to be used for the sake of others.” That sums up what the teachers at Westside are trying to do: have students think about the big picture. A big aspect of being human is being able to think, reason and make choices based on one’s learning.

Growing up in a lower-middle class home, I have learned to be modest and frugal. I have also learned that nothing comes free and that everything must be earned through determination and hard work. So when I joined the Cub Scouts at age 7, I was determined to excel and achieve the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. Since then, I have been intent on changing things for the better in everything I participated in. Ergo, having a lifetime goal to give back to the Earth, whether it be directly by studying chemistry to help the Earth or indirectly by donating some of my time and money back into the science field to help fund future developments of technology, seems best for the world.

A concern that teachers have is how to get their students motivated and engage in their learning on a day to day basis. Teachers realize that if a student is finding joy in their overall learning, they are more likely to continue being motivated and excel in their academic success. Students need to be motivated and remain engaged in the learning process, thus they find joyful learning. Sometimes it 's up to the teacher to motivate the children and motivation is critical to promote joyful learning. By teaching the students to have a growth mindset, teachers make sure there are four components to keep a student engaged and motivated: "attentiveness (they pay attention

The main points of a school are a place where students can learn and feel safe. Students talk about our classes being too dull and not really a true environment to learn and with the new renovations I feel as if the students would feel like they finally have a place they feel comfortable to study and work at. The other main point is safety one of the most important things maybe not seen by students but valued by teachers and parents. One of the major disasters going throughout the country are school shootings.

While the school administration argues that the dress code brings school unity, they are wrong because it takes away a sense of individuality from each student (Logos, concede). In today’s society, people use fashion and their daily outfits as a key way to express themselves. Students are constantly told throughout their school careers that they should demonstrates what makes them “different”, yet uniforms deny that sense of self-expression. According to Grace Chen of the Public School Review, uniforms may result in students turning to “other avenues of self-expression that may be viewed as even more inappropriate than clothing” (Ethos, professional credibility). This includes a nontraditional hairstyle, make up, or acting out towards authority at school or at home.

The missions we have completed to get here are similar to those we must do to reach each of our visions. I plan to close the achievement gap by making education resources available to all children. If children can access their classroom materials from anywhere, they are more likely to complete assignments, do research, broaden their ideas and ultimately change their educational experience. Another way we can close the achievement gap is by offering all students educational activities to participate in after school. By making education fun for all students and by using that extra time with them to encourage and support them educationally we will help those students succeed.

Students not only need to gain the knowledge for the field that they will be working in, but more importantly they need the knowledge of basic life skills on how to think and react to life experiences. It is important for people to understand that knowledge is power, and knowing that it’s not all about you is one of the best realizations one can have. We are all here to collectively work together for some type of common goal. No one person is more valuable than the other. So the next time we are waiting in line in Walmart, we shouldn’t be cursing about how the cashier is too slow, or that they need to open more lines because we are in a hurry.

“Uniforms sends a message and remind students that they are in school. One element of the message that when students are going to school that is their place of work” a quote taken from Joe Palumbo, the Co-Principal of Newacomb Academy. School uniforms create an identity for a school because without them there would be more difficulty in students to maintain school rules, and school uniforms teach students to dress properly and take pride in their appearance. One purpose of a school uniform is for identification and people will be able to distinguish which school students go to based on type of clothing they wear. There is this famous saying, ''Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow". I could not agree more. Growing up as a kid, I vividly recall myself always being enthusiastic to learn and explore. Now I stand on the state where I can proudly say that this passion has driven my growth, motivated me to grow even further and augmented my hunger for quality education.
