Gun Control Argument In Today's Society

Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.

Gun control has been a national issue for decades, if not centuries. The founding fathers created the Second Amendment that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This amendment was passed as part of the Bill of Rights and simply recognizing something that has existed or will continue to exist in the future. It was also another check on the government, if the people had no weapons to rebel against them, the government can oppress them easily and would make it easier for the government to assemble militia in a time of war. This Second Amendment doesn’t also mean that the people can’t have some measure of control in these extremely dangerous weapons.

People are scared and worried for themselves and their families, most of these people want guns to be banned or at least restricted. While the other part of Americans believe that guns are not the issue and feel that banning them would go against their constitution right to bear arms. As of 2013 an estimated 270 million total guns are registered to people in the United States.

Gun control is an issue in many aspects; it is a rights issue regarding the second amendment, a safety issue, a political issue, and a racial issue. In 2017 alone, there have been 5,300 gun- related deaths in the US, not including an approximate 22,000 due to suicide. With a higher rate of public shootings and massacres occurring in recent years, this topic has been of high debate. By prohibiting the purchase of firearms by civilians, you violate the 2nd Amendment of the US constitution, protecting gun ownership. Additionally, criminals will be undeterred by gun control laws.

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution grants its’ citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Though the Second Amendment addresses the legality of owning a firearm, the morality of owning a gun is left as an unanswered question. Since the right to bear arms is not a fundamental right and guns cause harm to innocent people, it is my position that the government should endorse stricter gun control measures, particularly automatic and semiautomatic weapons. In this paper I will argue my position of abolition by examining both premises in depth, discussing the role and duty of the government, and addressing an objection to my position.

Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.

Citizens of the United States are promised the the right to bear arms in the Constitution, and by applying gun control laws takes away that same right. Crime is high enough in cities with very few laws pertaining to gun control, but taking guns away from people who are registered with license will not solve the problem either. Placing more limitations on gun owners, particularly responsible gun owners, will not reduce gun violence.

The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.

Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.

First and foremost, banning guns will not stop criminals from obtaining and committing crimes with them. Furthermore, guns don’t kill people; people kill people. Lastly, guns prevent the government from becoming tyrannical and oppressive. At first, one may think that banning guns would be a superb solution to the growing problem of gun violence.
